during this next month i will be making a gaming board that will suit my cities of death games i play with my friends that I can easily convert to a board with a hill or two.
While i do this i will be showing you how to make it to, but you bases for the each section might be a different size for your gaming table then mine since my table is only a 3'x3' and not a 4'x6'. for those who doesn't know what ' means in measurement in means "feet" and " means inches. i will still provide measurements for those of you who have a 4'x6' tables

i will be getting supplies sometime this week

for those of you who are wondering though i will post my supplies and tools once i have all of them so i can show pictures so you know what i mean.

!there will be tools that will be potentially dangerous so for those who are particularly young have a RESPONSIBLE adult do it for you or supervise!

if you have any questions on the project or think i am missing send me a message or just reply to this post and i will answer it to the best of my ability

there are a supplies that you will need for this project
now for me all the supplies i just went out to buy cost me a total of around $25 but I already had some of my supplies
if you had to but every single item needed for this project it would cost around $50

but i should stop blabbing and tell you the supplies

you need mdf board you need (6) 2'x2' boards (I won't be using it because there was a different type of would that was around my house that I am using)

you need paint brushes your regular model brushes and one a little bigger for base coating

a cup for paint and sand mixing
and a washing cup

a pencil/ruler/sharpener/and eraser for mistakes

you need flock and sand

foam board (which i lucked out with a special from $6 to $2)

paints(what paints you need is up to you)

a space to work

an x-acto knife

you will need some kind of saw that can cut mdf (i will use a jig saw)

magnets

pva glue or crafts glue

you can get most of this at a hobby/art store store or a hardware store

since this is cities of death we need ruins and buildings so during the month i will show you different buildings that i will be using (you can use them to if you want or use your own)

the building I'm going to show you could be a hold out building useable to all troops except vehicles and walkers based on miniwargaming's terrain academy final project building

here is the building finished

first you want to pieces of foam board 12"x6 1/2" and one 12"x5 1/2"

make a horizontal line at 5 inches from the bottom and 1 1/2 inch from the top and another 1 1/2 inch under the 5 inch line

once you did that you want to draw out what your doing like so and try to be as percise as you can till you get something like this (windows are an inch wide and an inch and 1/2 tall/ doors are an inch wide 2inches tall/ bricks are half an inch wide 1/4 of an inch tall)

then you cut out your doors, windows, and blast points like so

after that you want to carefully cut the first layer of paper along the line of the bricks and top of the window then you want to carefully scrape out the paper on each individual brick and then take you pencil and out line that brick on the foam

and you want to continue doing this till you get it all done like this (if you want you can add cracks and indentations to the foam bricks to make it look weathered)

then you want to do the same to the other piece of foam board

then you will put the small wall's edge on the back of the the other one with its edge flush with one side of the smaller wall and mark it out on the bigger piece where there are not bricks

then you will slice out the back layer of paper and foam making sure not to cut the front layer like so

then you want to take out every other brick on the side that is going to be a corner with the other wall then on the other piece take out side bricks where there is a brick on the other wall
so the can connect (I messed up on mine that is why mine is not connected all the way down)

then glue it all in

then go watch t.v. or something while the glue dries

once the glue dries you want to make two headers one for the bottom and one for the top well you get pieces for your marked out ares that you marked first well you get foam board that size but longer then that wall then you make a corner between the two pieces like the wall. once you did that you want to make blast points on it so take your x-acto knife and stick the point somewhere on the header and spin you knife in a circle SLOWLY and take out that foam in that circle and there is your new blast point and do that a few more times to the headers then you glue it in

after that you will need to add in some floors so will need some pieces of foam board (I marked a piece that i am cutting to make it look more abstract)

then you will need to mark out where the floor is going( i did this so i know where to put the glue because it is easier for me to put the glue on the building)

optional: you can take popsicle sticks and glue them on the floor to make a wood floor

then you glue the first floor in

then glue in some supports under it

then do the same to the top floor except you can make the supports more decorative

and that is how you make the building I will have another post up later on painting it.

and this building took me a day and a half but it was my first time doing the bricks so it took a little bit longer

Nice brickwork.
FWIW, you can do that with a regular pencil. Just press down firmly when drawing your lines & the foam will indent and stay that way. Leaving the paper on the outside will make it stronger & less likely to flake off with handling.

Functional Advice:
Make those bottom supports better. If you end up with metal models on that floor (which could EASILY hold a Dread, Demon Prince or warjack), there's a good chance your glue & small supports won't hold. Saw it happen before. Not pretty.

Appearance Advice:
If you make sure that the boards on your floor DON'T line up, it will look better. Look at any hardwood floor and you'll see that the boards don't line up.

This is a good start. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with next. It's obvious that you're putting a lot of time and effort into it.

Not trying to speak for the OP, but I think hes stripping the first ply of posterboard away from the foam in order get that texture of the foam for his brick faces. As far as the paper providing better protection, as long as he applies a judicial coating of watered down glue over all the foam, he will not have any problems. As long as you get good coverage, it will be tougher than with paper alone.

Conduct While Gaming
While rolling a die, do not say, “Anything but a 1!” unless you wish the die to come up as 1. Any other such attempts to anger the “Dice Gods” will result in the existential equivalent of continuously flipping a coin and having it come up heads every time (for reference, see Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead). Your dice will be cursed to roll ones for everything other than morale checks, which will come up sixes.

ORK PLAYERS HAVE A LIMIT OF 1 SCREAMS OF WAAAAAAGH PER HOUR. violators will be forced to play tau.

so here is the painting part of the first building some pics are heavy
sorry it took so long but i got into a biking accident so I had to rest for a few days

so first, you base everything but the bottom part with a black acrylic paint

then you need to take a plastic cup and put your black paint in it and then put some and stir till it is even between thick and liquidy how to fix this is add more sand if liquidy or add more paint if too thick

then you want to apply it evenly on the bottom part of your building so it is not like on part has all sand and another all paint you want it like so

if you want to save your left over textured paint put a bag over the cup and seal it off by putting a rubber band over the cup and bag

then let it all dry overnight

the next day take a grey(not light gray) and paint it on the bottom part and dry brush it on the headers.

then take a light grey and dry brush on the headers and the bottom part

(i was testing this out) i took a white paint and paint strokes on the wall but no cover all of it

you then need to outline the bricks with a grey

then once you are done with that you can paint the floors while you wait for the pint on the outside walls to dry

then you paint your bricks but leave a few every so often blank

then you can drybrush a very light layer of light grey or white on your floors to show use

i then painted the blank bricks a different shade of red to show those odd-me-out bricks on building

then take a dark shade of grey and fill in your window sills

then take a lighter gray and highlight the window sills

and there is the first completed building of the project

now that was one of the harder to make buildings so most of the other terrain won't take as long for the post nor will the board that the buildings will magnetize to

A small amount of modeling clay around the exposed edges of the foamcore would add a bit of cleanness to the model. Otherwise great work, and I look forward to seeing more.
