Uhhh... where?

At GW stores? The answer is "I don't know."

Online? The answer is "Probably not, unless you can do it via PayPal somehow (I have never used PayPal so I don't know)."

At an independent game store? The answer is "It depends on the game store but I've never seen one that accepts personal checks."

So I'm not the best source of answers here, but you really need to clarify the question. The tile does not, in fact, say it all.

Not in the UK for sure. Personal Cheques for items bought from stores here are no longer accepted. Anywhere.
Don't know about you guys from across the pond though?

I very much doubt it, up here in the Great White North, most retail stores do not allow personal cheques for payment(generally used for paying bills, and down payments on things that require a credit check)

Hrm. My supermarket back home takes personal checks. I've never actually tried to use a personal check to pay for anything except for credit card bills. It's all either debit card, cash, or, rarely, credit card.

So I actually don't really know that, either.

I'm fairly sure that guaranteed cheques are still acceptable in store, though why you would go all that way to a store to guarantee a cheque when the associated card is also a debit card is beyond me.

I would imagine that GW would still accept a cheque via mail order, just going to take a bit longer that’s all.

You really should call GW and check.

Yes, the cheque guarantee card will be a debit card, it's safer to pay with that. Most shops don't accept checks because of fraud involving them, they want to know they money is accepted before letting you want out the shop.

Oh, I think I saw one once in a museum. A fossilized Tyrannosaurus tried to buy a soda from museum shop, but they didn't accept checks.

Seriously, I haven't seen anyone use checks here for like 15-20 years.

Ah, option B then.

Old folks still try to use cheques a lot. I do not know why they think it is a preferable system, but maybe I will when I'm 70 and people only accept payment by remote DNA sample transfer.

Ah, Backfire by name, Backfire....well you get the idea.

As for why people still used cheques, it's a well establish reliable system. Not for the "I WANT IT NOW!" generation but of use at times, particularly for delayed/staged payments.

I had to send a cheque in the post last month, but it was to a government department.

Commerse may have left them for dust, but you can always ask if they still accept them.

Cheque guarantee cards were abolished here last month, but the clearing system that processes cheques is still battling on.

To the OP:
Yes in some GW stores I have witnessed purchasing items with a check. There registers are pretty standard, they have the check slot there.

Still, I have not seen a check purchase in quite some time in the NJ / PA area.

It's a negotiable instrument, actually.

Most places (including GW) will still take checks here in the States.

having lived in Europe, Canada AND the US, maybe i can shed some light on the subject. In the US, there are a LOT more small town banks, whereas in Europe and Canada it is large centralized banks. Hence, when I moved down to the states in the early 90's and tried to use my Debit Card and they looked at me funny, like I was a Foreigner. Then I was shocked to see old ladies in front of me at the grocery store using personal checks.. wtf

Its just the way of things.. In the US checks are still prevalent, whereas in the rest of the world I think they are limited to very large purchases (cashier's checks) or for Rent. Rent is the only check I ever write.

Hope this sheds some light for americans why everyone else has no idea why the hell you'd pay for stuff at a store with a check, and to the rest of the world, for showing WHY they still do (small banks don;t want to pay for the Debit card access stuff, hence, people use checks)

A sterling illustration of why more and more businesses justyify not accepting checks. It keeps people with financial sense like nurd's from ripping them off.

A new day, a new time zone.

What? There are more than a few people stupid enough to think that's a smart way to use checks.

LOL, I don't think you known how checks work.

Peter: As we all know, Christmas is that mystical time of year when the ghost of Jesus rises from the grave to feast on the flesh of the living! So we all sing Christmas Carols to lull him back to sleep.
Bob: Outrageous, How dare he say such blasphemy. I've got to do something.

Pfft, credit cards are where it's at! Load 'em up, pay the minimum monthly payment, and you get your stuff!

What could possibly be the downside to that?

I thought the way to use credit cards was to just buy what you want and forget it.
