Comikaze Tournament Review

Venue

Comikaze was held at the South Hall of the Los Angeles convention center, easy to get to and they had underground parking for $12.

The tournament area itself was on the show floor and not in a separate room which made for an interesting atmosphere.

Imagine being surrounded by a sea of cosplayers, geeks, nerds and tattoo freaks with a dash of C/D list celebrities.

Here are a couple of shots of the crowd and a vid of Warboss Russ walking around.

Tables

I have to hand it to Reece and the Zero Comp guys for putting together outstanding tournament tables.

The tables were symmetric and had a nice distribution of different types of terrain.

There was plenty of space to walk around and set up and it was well ventilated.

Restrooms we also easily accessed and maintained.

Hotel

Russ and I stayed at the Ritz Milner for $120 and we could have gotten another guy in there splitting the cost.

The hotel was 6 blocks away and a nice walk with lots of food along the way.

Food

Lots of options!

On the Con floor there were several food truck type vendors, a large cafeteria and a starbucks upstairs.

A short walk outside led to some good pizza joints and sandwich shops.

There were a lot of sit-down restaurant options as well.

Organization

Everything on Reece’s part was golden. I had 5 great games on awesome tables and never felt rushed or slighted with time.

My only dislike is the sound issue, there were other gaming events going on around us and they had obnoxiously loud PA systems so it was hard to hear sometimes.

Sponsors and Swag

A huge thank you to:

Table War http://www.tablewar.com/
Thou Shalt Game http://www.facebook.com/thoushaltgame
Zero Comp https://www.frontlinegaming.org/the-team/
Frontline Gaming http://www.frontlinegaming.org/

The prize support was amazing.

Here’s a shot of Jon being a Door Prize winner.

That’s right each round they game away $100 just as a door prize.

Table War gave away a nifty movement tray as part of the swag bag.

Here’s a video of the swag table.

The prize support was handled a great way.

For each category you received a gift certificate which you could go shopping the swag table with.

This is an awesome idea as I was able to get prize support I actually wanted.

Final thoughts

A 5 Star event that I will go to every year!

Easy on the wallet, great chance of winning something and rubbing elbows with everyone I read about/ Listen to in the 40k forum world.

It was a special treat to have the Independent Characters in attendance along with Tasty Taste and LAtCS

Awesome review, Dave. Thanks for being so comprehensive, that was really a good idea of what the event was like.

Tough luck on getting seized on. You stayed classy though, which is what you are known for.

Glad you enjoyed the event. Looking forward to next year!

Tournament Results!

https://www.frontlinegaming.org/community/comikaze/comikaze-2011-results/

Sorry the formating is a bit wonky, we're working on a way to import results without it looking so weird.

Thanks to all for coming out!

Okay...but what do they MEAN?
Place is obvious from context; Name is pretty clear; Rtg seems to be the army played; Score is number of wins.

M-Buch.? Buch.? Progr?

@MFJohn
They will be going to rankings HQ today!

@Janthkin
M.Buch Buch and Progr are different styles of stength of schedule tie breakers used to break ties in a Swiss system. They are commonly used in Chess tournaments.

Like we said, the formatting is giving us trouble, we are working on a solution.

Was there just in time Sunday to see most of the teardown (perfect timing, I know), but there were some really nice armies out still.

Snapped a quick pic of a nice ork force -- I'll check to see if it's worth uploading when I get home. (My cellphone is many things -- a good camera is not one of them.)

The results page has been updated with awards and pictures!

@Janthkin
Sadly, those didn't make the trip home. We were running on empty and accidently threw them out. Sorry, we had everyone scored, too.

@Mewens, yes, please post pics!

Shouldn't I have 3.5 points?

I went 3-1-1.

@Yakface
I will kick Luis and Frankie in the rear end if they got the results wrong. We will double check the data.

@axeman1n
The round 6 "win" was just a joke, we didn't actually give it to anyone. Sorry if that was confusing.

This was the only photo that came out -- like I said, my cellphone isn't any kind of camera. (It tends to focus on random things, especially when there's movement, and it takes like 30-45 seconds to shoot each picture between finagly focus and touch controls -- and of the three of us, I was the only one who cared about miniatures, so there was some pressure to move on and see more of the hall.)

Anyway, it's a gorgeous ork army -- definitely inspiring!

Well, if a win=1 and a tie=.5, then something is definitely off.

I was actually wondering how I managed to miss winning anything with a 3-1-1 record, but I figured I just missed out.

But no worries, the last thing I need is more models, so even if it turns out I was supposed to win something, there's no need to send me anything.

Here's an interview of me on Fanboy Comics from Comikaze if anyone is interested!

http://fanboycomics.net/interviews/gaming/505-comikaze-expo-2011-fanboy-comics-interviews-frontline-gaming-founder-reece-robbins

@Yak
The guys swear they made no errors with the data input. As a way to say sorry if there was a mistake made, which it sounds like there was, we'll offer you a half price ticket to the BAO this year, if you choose to come. Sorry about that.

The results aren't up yet.

I have submitted 4 tournaments to RankingsHQ in the past few weeks and none of them have gone up. I think he is offline at the moment, or really busy.
