Well I figured since there was a metal thread here I should start up a thread for the music that I live my life by. So how many punk listeners do we got on dakka I wonder?

Gotta count myself as one. As it happens my dad is going through all his old vinyls. So far hes found a whole mess of The Damned, Tuff Darts, Rezillos, Toy Dolls and a Dead Kennedys album. Still waiting to see what else he pulls out.

Bad religion are playing in a few days so i cant wait to see them again.

I was pretty into punk, but then I turned 18 and realized how terrible most of it is.

Also, this.

The minute you realize that "attitude" is no replacement for non-banal, non-angsty lyrics and competent musicianship the punk genre becomes pretty unappealing. With a few notable exceptions, obviously. I still love Rancid.

You poser. The last real punk was Karen Carpenter.

I was very in to punk and basically the whole counter-pop music scene in the 90's. Since I was in So. Cal, I got to go see all sorts of bands and loved it all.

However, for the same things filbert and Monster Rain mentions, it just seems so distant, now.

I still love it when I hear some of the stuff I used to listen to, and I recall how I used to feel, but more in a nostalgic vs direct relating sort of way. Being in a different place mentally, emotionally, physically, when I hear newer punk, it just sounds... young.

I do still have the same cynical punk outlook, and can throw a sneer at will. It is just focused on the re-merchanidizing of my childhood, selfishness and shallowness of most people, and the hypocrisy of leaders. Now, though, all that disdain gets me nowhere. At this point, I actually have something to lose.

Dang I'm feeling philosophical today...

Yes punks with an X. 'Punx' is a popular term used within the punk culture as a reference to a punk social circle or band so before the ironic and condecending (or trolling) remarks do a little reseach.

OT. Yeah, I've been into the punk and subs (Ska, Hardcore and Psychobilly etc) since I was a young kid and currently playing in a punk band. I love many different genres but punk is probably the main one for me.

The List
The list is thousands long
People who decided it wasn't for them
Did they really make that decision?
Conditioning runs deep in the U.S.A.
Teenage rebellion is just fine as long as you stop once you turn eighteen
Thousands of punks turned to society's tools
There is something in their eyes
You can tell they sold out
Remember punk is more than teenage rebellion
Sure it starts there. But why does it end?
And the list is thousands long
What other life is there besides a life of freedom?
Never give in Never give up
When boredom sets in Think of the young kids who we once were
That enthusiasm is still there
You look around
What do you see?
One to replace every five that leave
And the list is millions long
But, lately I see an upsurgency
Back to old values of dedication and "feth"ing rebellion
Perhaps the list is only hundreds long.

Tell me you prefer your lyrics to be about vikings and burning churches. And Satan.

I'd say grunge is closer to that than punk. Punk, especially modern, has gotten more political. There's the standard mix of anger, hopelessness and songs about being fethed up and the odd extremely sexually suggestive one.

This isn't aimed at Trondheim necessarily, but why do people dismiss entire genres at a time? Seriously, not liking something is fine, but making grandiose claims that have no basis just seems unnecessary.

Melbourne

Alright its quater past 1 in the AM, i've just got back from seeing Bad Religion play in Melbourne and thought i might right up a quick review of sorts before i keel over and die.

This was my 3rd time seeing BR. They played at a venue called The Palace. Its of a decent size but has horrible acousitcs. Still socks were rocked and a great time was had by all.
It was a good set, about an hour total + encore. The Support bands were a bit naff but thats what you expect. Unlike last time when Bad Religion were down under and NOFX were supporting. That was a good gig.

Not much else to say really. Aside from i've gone somewhat deaf. See thats why The Palace is a doozy. It has wonky acoustics that render anyone listening with earbuds almost completely unable to hear whats being played. But if you take the buds out so you can hear then its all horribly ringy and stuff. Its a right ol' case of Damned if you do, Damned if you don't. I'm also expecting to look like i just went 3 rounds with pro boxer when i wake up tomorrow. As is befitting a proper mosh i (and everyone else there for that matter) was brutalised by those around me in the best way possible. At one point i was backhanded in the face. Luckily i wasnt wearing my glasses or they most likely would have been broken. I was beaten repeatedly in various parts of my chest and face. At one point i even had my earbud punched out of my ear . And it has just now come to my attention that i have been punched and/or kicked or even quite possibly stabbed in the kidney. My dog is also fairly persistant in her quest to lick every drop of sweat of my legs. It kinda gross but kinda nice.

Well thats its for me i think. Its time for bed or maybe floor. Floor is good.

Oh also one last thing before i forget. I don't know what its like in other places but here in Melbourne theres some rules you need to follow when in a mosh.
1. If some body slips or falls. Stop and help them up. We dont need or want a repeat of Limp Bizkit.
2. If you gonna crowdsurf thats cool. But repeat offenders better watch it and im talking about those guys who surf to make a nuisance of them selves. If ya gonna do it prepare to have your shoes or hats stolen and thrown up on stage. I don't wanna be kicked in the head by the same nincomepoop 6 or 7 times just because he wants to be a pain in the arse and neither does anyone else. The penalty for this is you can walk home without foorwear or headwear and as it happens it rains alot in Melbourne. ALOT!
3. Girls dont act all offended when some random mosher bumps/brushs/touches your ladybits (or as my 6 y/o cousin insists on calling them, "Chesticles"). Chances are he was pushed and it was an accident. This isnt a rule as such i was really just looking for an excuse to write the word chesticles.

That being said these are actually more just commen sense rather then rules and i probably look like a idiot for writing them but i digress. Anyway it now occurs to me that it is 2:15 2:20 2:25 in the AM and that it has taken me an hour to write this post. I'm guessing i may have blacked out at some point.

Well its about time i lie down on my nice wooden floor now and try to ge....
