A friend of mine is loving on tau, but isn't sold on tau yet. What sold you?

What originally made me like the army is the black and white image of a fire warrior on the gw site when you click on Tau Empire under armies.

for me it was the hate of the melee-phase and I played my marines all shooty but the vanilla-codex does even this worse than the BA of the friend I started playing with so I thought I could go full house shooting and what shall I say it makes so much more fun

also I freaking love the look of the Fire Warriors and I can paint them in urban camo (camo on SMs looks really bad, I tried this on my Land Raider =[ ).

Playing mostly Necromunda and Battletech, Malifaux is awesome too!

I do not yet play them, but the look and fluff sold me on the faction itself.

Tau aren't "easy painting" they have a ton of variety between the style of each model, in an army you will paint the smooth hulls of their vehicles, the rigid armor of the fire warrior and battle suits, the fire warriors' cloth uniform. Kroot flesh, and vespid skin. It's hard to master all those styles of painting when many armies focus on only one or two types.

I wanted to play a shooting army as my first army. I didn't want to be IG so it became tau.

I really liked the fluff, so that sold me.

The customization of their battlesuits also sold me, as did the notion of railguns.

The battleforce being a steal was great as well. Way back when the prices weren't so high, I saved $70 USD per box.

The high strength of the weapons was also a plus, and the notion that the tau army works together to kill things, and paid to think your moves out.

I also liked how no one I knew played them, and I really liked them in the Dawn of war 1 game.

I like tau as well. I liked the sense of "sweet evil".... that maniacal "conform to the greater good or die" sense of the tau.
I do not play tau
But the way they do things is reminiscent of Orwell's 1984 ..... big brother is always watching.... fight to conquer. Conform or die.
its evil..... wrapped in a pretty pink bow, with a big splash of red right in the middle. (Red being the Color associated with communism)
Tau are maniacal, and probably the most violent race. The are just so damned. cool.
Its for the greater good.

I like their use of the caste system and their belief in the greater good.

Combat wise, I like their preferred use of ranged combat over melee, and seems to only lack decent artillery to complete their ranged mastery.

Not really a Tau player, but I like the diverse looks of the Army, clean and smooth and tribal looking (Kroot), only wish the next codex has even more races in it.

I play Tau because they are NOT grim dark as everyone on here seems to crave so much. Why we all have to be a bunch of miserable sods running around all depressed with no light at the end of the tunnel is beyond me.

It's a nice change of pace to play a race that wants to progress technology and incorporate it into daily life rather than ban it as heretic etc....

Also it is great when you win with Tau because they are so overcosted and underperforming that winning comes down more to skill than codex creep, Mat ward or someother stupid thing that players like to whore for the easy win.

Krieg! What a hole...

Shooty, looks and fluff, a bit, seems to be more down to earth compared to the other, now I don't play them, but they're a really close 2nd favorite.

They were the first new race in 40k in years. I was thinking of picking up a third army and they are the polar opposite of my BA and Nids. Back then they were the best shooty army....

Plus I wasn't a dad then so I had a lot more disposable income

I loved how the army looked, and the fact that they could reach out and touch somebody with one of the single most powerful weapons in a standard 40k game are what sold me on them. After I discovered the ability to customize the battlesuits in literally thousands of configurations, I was completely sold.

I like almost everything about them.

What originally got me into them was I wanted to play a gun line, Imperial Fists yellow was too hard for me, and I hated guard.

I eventually discovered that they weren't a gunline army, but they were still shooty, and by then I was already in love with the army.

Tau can be a bit irksome to paint. Especially when most paint schemes online have such brilliant highlight jobs *shudders and grabs a pot of Devlan mud*

But I mostly decided to play for the look of having a unit of mech suits.

Little did I know I would to spam more.

I like the fact that they are so different from every other 40K faction. They are the closest to modern day forces. (I know it's a stupid comparision to make for a futuristic game) I also like the fact that they don't run towards the opponent waving sword/lances/axes/pointy sticks!

Cheers

The look , play style and the greater good.

They look like a high tech futuristic army.

The play style is a steep learning curve but once you find the groove its very enjoyable to play.
I some it up as 1. Firepower 2. Mobility 3. Timing
Sometimes the enemy brings more fire power, sometimes they are more mobile, maybe even both, but no one can pull off timing like the Tau.

What really sold it for me though was the greater good. I would have skipped 40k all together without it.
