Dark Angels are in the new paint set, which is a strong indication.

Current scuttlebutt is that the other force will be Chaos.

so, Space marines v Spikey Space marines....himmmm, bet i'm not buying that starter set. Thats asumming there will be a 6th any time soon. 5th works and they could probably get afew more years out of it. Look at RT and 2nd, both lasted for nigh on 10 years each befor they started to revamp every 10 seconds.

Umm, I'm guessing math and history aren't your strong suit.

Rogue Trader (1987)
Second Edition (1993)
Third Edition (1998)
Fourth Edition (2004)
Fifth Edition (2008)

So let's see... 6 years, 5 years, 6 years, 4 years and if 6th drops this year... Wait for it... Wait for it... 4 years!

edit: Fixed math. lol Never criticize someone, because you will just make a mistake.

It would be cool if the new Chaos codex supported a new cultist list. That way the box set could be Dark Angels vs Chaos Cultists being supported by a contingent of Fallen.

Actually that's 6 years, 5 years, 6 years, 4 years, so there actually isn't that strong a precedent for 4 year rotations. I still agree though that 6th is probably coming out this summer, the rumours on that have been strong for the last year or 2 with little variation.

Its actually been a two year rotation since 2004, switching an alternating edition every two years, which gives each edition a four year life. They have also all come out in July, with the box in September.

40K Fourth -2004
7th Fantasy - 2006
40K fifth - 2008
8th Fantasy - 2010
40K sixth - 2012

They figured this out around 4th/7th edition as a constant revenue stream for new editions every two years. I am quite happy to bet you a box of 40K troops that 6th will be out in July. I don't even need to ponder it for a moment.

it should be like eldar v dark eldar or necrons v tau or something not SM, as SM are practically always in the starter packs. or nids v IG - that would be cool

Yeah, unless they go with the 'choose your own starter set' route, I think you can pretty much guarantee that GW will never do a 40K starter set that doesn't include Marines. Them being the poster boys of 40K and all.

somewhere in the webway

i highley doubt it will be marines or DA vrs CSM. GW has never put 2 power armor forces in the same starter. especially not ones that could be converted into the same army. and the chances of DA vrs an all cultist force is unlikley at best, since starter boxes have been trending towards larger forces.

what is likley is that we will see DA, alongside one of the more recent xenos forces. probally DE or necrons, since both have been redone recently. the odds of tau or eldar showing up would be minimal, since they would need a new codex PDQ. im also not thinking DE since they have already featured in 3rds starter. (although the new DE is an entire diffrent beast then the 3rd ed version of DE) - so my money is on DA vrs necrons.

im willing to bet the box will include at least a squad of tac marines, some bikes, termies, maybe a character and dread, against a bunch of warriors, scarabs, some destroyers and maybe flayed ones or immortals, with an overlord on foot.

The talk is the Chaos side is made up mostly of Culists, so the Marine V's Marine issue isn't as bad as folks are fearing.

Of course this is all still rumour and hearsay atm, but Chaos is supposed to be one of the worst of humanties foes, seems odd they've never been in the box.

I like the sound of the cultists, would actually get me to start CSM. Always liked the description that the CSM forces were more or less tons of cultists lead by a handful of marines or even a single one as a warlord. Gives the same sort of feeling meat grinder IG lists do, but you could imagine a Khorne lord literally throwing cultists at low flying air craft. Got some scouts I got for $2 in a yard sale just sitting around waiting for it.

I think it would be more interesting if rather than generic CSM they were fallen. Would add more to the set.

it'll be space marines and somethign else. I also doubt it'll be a faction other than vanilla marines but it'd be cool if the did dark angels or somethign like that.

I also doubt it'll be chaos or chaos marines in the box, GW likes moving plastic, but they also need parents to be willing to buy models for their kids, and while some parents will see it as a game others will see demons and assume its something evil and not buy them, i think gw is smart enough to not want their bottom line hurt

^this. I dont think I would have gotten into Warhammer if the starter had demons in it, and I can say the same for a lot of people.

I kinda remember that starter sets are for people, ya know, starting out. Of cource they will have space marines in it because it's one of the most recognizable factions. If they added necrons like another person posted, then yea, I can see that happening

yea, necrons would make sense as they represent another faction that while easily seen as bad guys are robots not demons so parents will like it more. personally as na ork player i'd be happy with ork vs marines again but tha tis probably to much to ask.. i jus thope they keep the AoBR plastic koptas in production they look better than deff koptas and could be sold for cheaper and in 3 packs as metal.

I'd also liek to see eldar vs space marines as space elves would be more appealing to people as humans vs elves would attract fantasy genre fans... but again i play eldar to so it might be wishful thinking on my part.

A Reliable rumor monger is the one who told us DA vs. Chaos.

Also remember this: GW does not always do what we think is logical.

Besides if Chaos is the first 40k Dex released for 6th don't you think that being in the starter set might boost that immediate sales?
