Not sure what language I can get away with here so i'll be a real a sweetheart and just ask, are frequent dakka posters jerks? I'm reading all types of 40k forums on here and its sad how people are paying attention to your post just enough to say, "Look it up, stupid", or, "That paint job; good not great", or "It's on pg whatever". Why the heck are you even posting if you're not going to tell someone the answer!? What a waste of time on both ends. You had to type it and I had to read it. I don't even want to ask questions half the time for fear of be ridiculed for asking in the first place. Please explain this, thanks!

J/K, I chalk up most of the answers like that to Helping people help themselves. Now, as for people saying, "Go look it up stupid." That's uncalled for.

It's better to tell people the page number and let them find it next time. Half the time we tell someone the answer, their next post is "Can I have a page number to convince the rest of the group?".

Because if something is listed somewhere, you can find it on your own. Not to be blunt, but people on a forum are not your personal Google/rulebook readers/thread searchers.

People on dakka have an aversion to straight up copy/pasting rules form the rulebooks into threads. It’s generally frowned upon by other users if not the moderators. Thus telling people what page a rule is on is a better option. Automatically Appended Next Post: curran12 wrote:Because if something is listed somewhere, you can find it on your own. Bingo
Google has a search bar, the rulebook has an index
If however you have a question to how a rule relates in a certain situation then by all means make a thread in YMDC and someone will (maybe) answer you. But by all that is unholy in the gray knight codex use the search function first please.

@Red Pax-the reason for the page number is that GW takes a firm stance against forums posting rules, hence we give page numbers so GW doesn't get pissed off. Coming in as a new person, you probably didn't know that (I know I didn't when I came in), but now you know that giving a page number isn't being a dick-it's being helpful while not having GW shut the site down. In the 2 years I've been on this site, I have yet to see "Look it up, Stupid." Maybe 'it's in the rulebook, go look it up' to someone who is being a pain in the arse, but most of the posters aren't rude unless they have a reason to be. And as for paint jobs...everything is subjective. I went for years thinking my painting was great, until I saw really good painting. Then I just strove to be better. Saying something is good, not great, is a fair remark-it means it's set for a table, but needs some work to be a fair entry in a painting-competition or or something. After all, nobody said "your painting sucks so bad I wish my mom aborted me so I wouldn't have to see it." THAT comment would be dickish.
You don't have to be the world's toughest guy to survive on here, but you have to be able to handle a couple rough and toughers. Watch out for Matty-you'll know who he is when you see his posts.

I usually try to avoid just telling people to look it up, because its a pet peeve of mine if I want something and someone says look it up. But in general you either get good ones or bad ones, no one comes to mind as being average

Yeah, when I first came to DakkaDakka I took every sarcastic barb and blatant insult very personally.
Now I'm able to ignore them by imagining that the person insulting me is a bloated whale of neckbeard with a greasy orange beard. Because I'm not a bloated whale of a neckbeard with a greasy orange beard, this enables me to feel superior to them and casually dismiss everything they say.

When it comes to rules issues, a page reference is enough unless they are confused about the rule itself. Posting rules on here is against forum rules.

I think regulars get a little frustrated with people using things like rule dispute forums for "tell me how this works, cause I never bought a codex".
Its more about newwer members missusing and abusing forums, than it is about regulars being rude.

I'm what some folks would consider "a jerk" because I think it's more valuable to teach you how to fish than catch your fish for you, and people tend to ignore the fact that most people on this site don't type like mongoloids and they shouldn't either. That and the same questions getting asked over and over again when there's the exact same thread on the same page are maddening, and nobody seems to understand "how i strip warhams" will do them more good by googling it instead of starting the thousandth thread about it.

Most folks here are quite nice. We have a few sourpusses. If they get rude, hit the yellow triangle sign on their post, and one of the moderators will deal with it.
Bearing in mind that deal with it means we will review it carefully, and may not agree with you about how bad it was, and that most moderation/warnings are private. So even if we give the person a talking so or suspension, you probably won't know about it. So definitely hit the alert button/batsignal, but also ignore the person and don't worry if you don't see us publicly crucify them.
Welcome to the forum, BTW! Be sure to read the forum rules (bottom right of every page), ask a moderator or in the Nuts & Bolts forum if you have any questions, and check out the Gallery for hobby inspiration. We're all really proud of it.

Most people who have been on any one forum for a length of time, it can be any forum, tend to get annoyed about seeing the same questions asked by new people every week. I'm one of those old crotchety members on another forum I goto for a different hobby. (I'm fairly new to Warhammer, 2 years)
I prefer people tell me the pg number honestly. When I'm in a game I don't want to back up my rule interpretation with "a dude on Dakka said so!"
When asking a question I usually try to google stuff first.

Didn't know that GW prowls the forums looking to shut them down if they reveal too many rules. That is pretty lame, but not out of character for them. Sick, money hungry bastards.
I have the books, so I understand where you all are coming from about the cheapskates that don't wanna drop the money for books.
I guess its just a matter of everyone being jaded and assuming you are an idiot for asking...well...anything.
Okay I love this one, when you ask a question and someone says "someone already posted about this somewhere else, go look it up". You know what? I don't wanna sift through the thousands of posts that have to do with a land raider. I'm not going to look it up. Tell me or don't. Do yourself a favor if you're going to withhold the answer and don't post that you're going to withhold the answer.
I understand and agree that there are a lot of dummies that want you to tell them what the ballistic skill does. I guess I should be thankful this isn't bolter and chainsword. Wow, those guys are douchebags. I play Ultramarines and I"m still not good enough for that forum.

It's not a question of " GW prowls the forums looking to shut them down". Nor is it a case of "sick, money hungry bastards".
It's simply a case of this is how Dakka has done it since its inception, and it is how we will likely continue to do it. There is no reason, at all, for someone to expect to be given all the rules.
I have the books, so I understand where you all are coming from about the cheapskates that don't wanna drop the money for books.
I guess its just a matter of everyone being jaded and assuming you are an idiot for asking...well...anything.
Not so much that "you're an idiot for asking", but more that in some cases there are people who ask the Internet before their own gaming group, local staff, game organizers, etc. Dakka is not necessarily the 'end all, be all' resource for everything 40k/ WHFB/Warmahordes/ FOW/Infinity/Whatever Game System you want to mention.
Okay I love this one, when you ask a question and someone says "someone already posted about this somewhere else, go look it up". You know what? I don't wanna sift through the thousands of posts that have to do with a land raider. I'm not going to look it up.
Then you're going to have problems. Dakka has a built-in search feature, just for that reason. Legoburner has spent a long time getting it to function properly.
You don't want to make Legoburner sad, do you?
It's important to make a distinction between "I don't want to!" and "I looked, but I cannot find the answer to this!". When you get the "I don't want to!" crowd, it becomes very...heated, as the mere idea that they actually utilize the search function is somehow offensive. Heavens forbid you have to do a bit of legwork to get an answer, rather than simply waiting for someone to reply.
In either case: you have to wait. So why not make it a more beneficial experience for both yourself and others, and do a bit of searching? In a worst case scenario, you find the answer later and have a thread which is searching for something you already found. That's fine. Append your post with a link to where you found your answer, and you save someone else a bit of researching as they can just find your thread!
Tell me or don't. Do yourself a favor if you're going to withhold the answer and don't post that you're going to withhold the answer.
I understand and agree that there are a lot of tards that want you to tell them what the ballistic skill does. I guess I should be thankful this isn't bolter and chainsword. Wow, those guys are douchebags. I play Ultramarines and I"m still not good enough for that forum.
I don't think it's a matter of you "not being good enough for that forum". You 'come across' as rather abrasive and demanding, which is something which one can only construe might be through the fact that a text-based medium such as forums can make even a relatively nice young chap seem like a pompous jerk if they don't include a smiley face or some indicator of sarcasm or satire in their post.
And before one of the moderators says it:
Yes, I'm aware of the irony of that statement coming from me.
Just trust me on this. You will have a much better experience here on Dakka if you step back and check yourself before just performing knee-jerk postings.
Also--please refrain from using such terminology as "tards" here. While I understand you mean it in the general sense that it is flung about today, this is not a frathouse or Xbox Live and using such terms is not generally going to get you on any of the more mature or intelligible posters' good side.

I understand and agree that there are a lot of dummies that want you to tell them what the ballistic skill does. I guess I should be thankful this isn't bolter and chainsword. Wow, those guys are douchebags. I play Ultramarines and I"m still not good enough for that forum.
Sometimes what I like to do is use the forum search tool when someone asks a question. If I find the answer fairly quickly I'll post the link and feel slightly superior for having used the search tool better than them. If I can't find the answer right away, I just answer the question.
