So the thread on Joey Berry was locked in no small part because of some ridiculous and misogynistic remarks. However, it did motivate me to look at several of her videos and I think it would be worthwhile for others to take a look if you like watching the utube.
The thing about Joey Berry is that she has a positive attitude about the hobby which is quite refreshing. She does ramble on quite a bit, some people will find it appealing others may get a bit impatient. In terms of her presentation and on air "personality" she has a lot going in her favor. She is very animated in her delivery with many changes in facial expression, which is a great contrast to many people that make warhammer videos. She also has a decent sense of humor.
As far as content goes, I would say it is really at the beginner level, which is reasonable since she has not been in the hobby all that long. She could definitely edit some of her videos to be much shorter. I only looked at a couple of battle reports and they suffered the same problems as many other video battle reports, too long, too slow, tedious to listen to.
Her videos have definitely improved since she first started producing them and I hope she continues to make them. So if you want a break from warhammer bitterness take a look at her channel.
I missed the original thread but seeing as I have nothing better to do I thought I'd watch a few. It's obvious that this is a one person operation so for the most part I can overlook things like the focus issues for the most part (although they occur with such frequency it can wear thin). She does however need to work on the lighting a little. I will say in advance that I do not care what she looks like, to me that is immaterial. I'm more interested in the content of her videos.
- Honestly I was hoping that she would hurry up and get to the point with this video. Her presentation struck me as slapdash, one the one hand she had an example of a miniature that came in a bag and then used an assembled Necron (with what appeared to be a mould line visable on the left leg) to address sprues, rather than holding up an actual sprue. In fact she could have used the Malifaux mini to demonstrate this point.
- As far as the tools are concerned she could have had them laid out and went through each one briefly to explain the uses of them instead of relying on some stock images, or hastily grabbing them. he also demonstrated only a very small selection of the tools and their uses (no knife, had drill for pinning or drilling barrels etc.)
Both these points make her presentation come across as hap-hazard and would be easily rectified if she took a little time before hand to set things up, and plan out her video more.
- Nothing about dry fitting the parts before gluing to make sure that they line up correctly
- "Know The Material Your Is Made From'. A very, very basic error that detracts from the video and it's content.
- No safety tips, especially for resin, or using a knife. The only safety tip that she gave concerned not spraying inside
- 15.31 really bad editing
- She jumps from washing the release agent off the component parts to showing an assembled miniature to spray undercoat. It could have been much more instructive for viewers if she showed how she removed the components, how she assembled them, maybe assembled miniatures with different materials to show the different techniques, etc.
No tip for working with different materials (plastic, resin, metal) and what precautions to take
- she talks about spray undercoat but doesn't mention anything about humidity or weather conditions until after the spraying is done. In my mind something like that should be said before the spraying tips as it is more logical (i.e. you check the weather before you spray). The way she has done it makes it look like she forgot and then had to backtrack When she talks about "a good distance" a rough estimate could also help. It also looks like she contradicts her own advice and uses a model that has been assembled and which will have areas that are difficult to paint. She also doesn't talk about sticking the models to something that would make it easier to move them during the spraying and not get finger prints on.
- The Facebook tips at the end could have been worked in throughout the video with a little forward planning. Again the content of her video seems to jump slightly and can be difficult to follow for the novice (who the video is aimed at). Her repeating points off Facebook that she already covered (humidity when priming) makes it look like she is trying to fill airtime and hasn't picked out her comments in advance
I know that what I've said has mainly concentrated on the issues with one video, but as the most recent in the series I believe that she should have had ample time to get accustomed to producing her videos. I will say though that I am impressed that she spoke clearly, annunciated well and did not use too much technical jargon. I appreciate people who can do that. It is clear from the videos that she is knowledgeable and passionate about the hobby, it's just that her presentation could use a little refinement. I think that if she sat down and planned out what she wanted to say more and let the content flow more naturally it would improve the videos leaps and bounds.
Just my tuppence worth, please do not take it as a slam against her.
I didn't see the original thread, but it saddens me that people would make disparaging and mysogynistic remarks.
This young lady is an enthusiastic hobbyist as are many of the rest of us. Let her share her experiences with us as we would like to be allowed to do as well.
She is a person who enjoys games, just like you or I.
I wish I had time to vlog as she does.

Armies: Space Marines, IG, Tyranids, Eldar, Necrons, Orks, Dark Eldar.
I am the best 40k player in my town, I always win! Of course, I am the only player of 40k in my town.
Likewise. I do a podcast and it's a lot worse than this in terms of editing and prep, so I'm throwing no stones. I'll be sure to check out some vids from Joey when I've next got a painting evening.
She seems a nice enough lass, but after five minutes I just click something else, her videos seem a little devoid of real content.
I much prefer to listen to a decent podcast, with several people discussing things that are of interest to me, her' videos appear to just be her talking into a camera, and plenty of it also revolves around her, you know.. "my thoughts" "me being new to the hobby" as opposed to a discussion about the interesting bits of hobby. I honestly believe that her popularity is simply down to the fact she is a relatively attractive women discussing a predominantly male hobby. If I was to write down exactly what she said from 3 or 4 videos, hand the transcripts to a bloke with a beard and have him read them, he wouldn't be getting 15,000 viewers on youtube, that is simply a hypothesis that I and several other people share, and it seems a valid one to me, if you think that how you look doesnt affect peoples perceptions of you then you havent really been paying attention to life in general, because it affects all of us, every day.
I didn't see any misogyny in the other thread either, and I don't see why it got locked, probably just because I was in it and I have a talent for annoying some of the mods. All I saw was several people basically suggesting that men are stupid for being so shallow and vapid that they have great interest in videos that aren't actually that entertaining. Thats just my opinion, if you genuinely believe that her channel or videos would be as popular if they were delivered by a fat bloke in a black hoodie, thats yours. I don't see how that is offensive, or against women. Its laughable to suggest in fact.
To sum up, If I watch a video, I like watching the lads at beasts of war because they seem a good craic, have some good camaraderie, and I like their dialogue because I think they discuss things I find interesting. I don't watch Joey because I think her content is rather dull, perhaps because its aimed at novices?
Either way, what is glaringly obvious is that her sex and her looks DOES affect her viewership, and thats the same for everybody on youtube, because human beings are fickle and shallow creatures. I think thats more a case of misandry than misogyny, because its not a failing on her part, its a failing on the part of the great number of men who act like cavemen when lasses turn up at GW.
Same goes for that crazy thread about six months ago when everybody went mental cos there was a photo of a lass in WD. It's laughable how blokes act, and thats a criticism of blokes, not women.
And have you ever took your missus into a packed GW?
If anybody thinks that your sex and your looks don't affect your media footprint, or that pointing that out is misogyny, they need to have a word with themselves. How you look is important, sure it shouldn't be, but it is, and thats the world we live in.

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.
Looks as good as anything I've seen done by a "one-person-you-tuber".
I don't watch a lot of YouTube, mainly because I do most of my reading/listening on the commute, and blogs/podcasts simply work better for that.
If I do watch YouTube, I do appreciate a bit of rambling and "personal aspects". Hell, even pro-Tubers like Beasts of War make an effort to try keeping the human touch in it and NOT be a dry instructional/promotional video devoid of anything personal.
I like English girls and I love English accents... so why does her voice annoy me? On the bright side, I did watch a video from another girl where Joey taught her how to play Malifaux.
Now I know how Malifaux works. Wonderfully elegant system.
Been watching her stuff pretty much since the beginning, and it's certainly had some ups and downs. I agree it is a little content light at times but it also seems to have a lot more focus on the entertainment aspect. It's good to have a little variety and Joeys videos are (as they started) a lot more beginner friendly and a lot less intimidating than some of the other youtubers out there. At the end of the day she's clearly having fun, and bringing a lot of enthusiasm into the hobby which often seems to be missing in the community, or hidden behind the mass of complaining and moaning a lot of people seem so fond of, which I know from personal experience has put a lot of people off. Then again being British and catching the little jokes or comments she adds that not many people outside of the island would get doesn't hurt the appeal. There's something out there for everyone and if Joey isn't your cup of tea there will definitely be a channel that is.
I agree with Matty, if I were start to a youtube channel doing the exact same with my pasty, specky mug I doubt i'd get any views. In saying that I think she needs more content in her videos, not in the way of her speaking but perhaps more pictures or video. The adepticon videos were particularly disappointing if you compare them to BTP's offerings (just as a quick example).
BTP's videos work in the sense of just Shaun walking around talking because he shows a lot of content. There's a lot of signal to noise ratio, but for sheer volume of content BTP do not too badly. I like their informal 40k battle reports.
A new wargaming youtuber that has started up is The Warhammer Lady. There are battle reports, painting advice and codex reviews. I really enjoyed the Tau review that she did, and I'm looking forward to seeing more of the Eldar review that she's doing. I think it may appeal to newer/more casual gamers but she seems to know her stuff.

Yeah actually she is much better, I just watched her Tau Codex Vid and quite enjoyed it.

Eh, she could use some tips and advice on her video-making (not from me, from someone who knows what theyre talking about) but that's not an uncommon trait. More than half the podcasts I've heard are raucous, chaotic and unpleasant.
I'll admit I watch her videos because she's fairly good looking and has an accent (to me). She's also pretty quirky and a total nerd like most other 40k players but looks like someone I would actually carry on a conversation with, in public.

I just saw the other thread....
I really like the cut of Joey's jib. She's interesting and has something to say.
For all of this gak about "amateur", you do know you are talking about You Tube, right?
Her content is useful and has a well thought out clip of interesting, she discusses her subjects, and aside from an occasional stutter step now and then is on par with what you would have expected GW, Mantic, or any other company to have done years ago.
Yeah, she is easy on the eyes, but her gaming content, and her enthusiasm for the discussion gives her more credibility then the other nutters that keep dropping gak bombs of wit and ignorance about GW "conspiracy", how we need money for bread, or some of the other diamond encrusted turd opinions we see from people with ten times as much resources, cameras, and general flash in their products that they keep imposing on the screen.
Is she a little rough? Yes, but so what.
As looking at gaming from a newb standpoint, though- she's unimposing and has relevant discussion on her subjects of the shows. She has a great attitude and seems well rounded in the information/ entertainment mix.
I don't really care for the snappy quips coming out once in a while, but I can over look them.
Another one that was pretty cool is Wargamer Girl and her games of Warmachine.
I don't mind the rough, and I have no tips for her but to keep doing what she's doing and keep up the great work.
At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

Ok I found her videos much better. It showed that there was better forethought in planning the videos, more in depth discussion, the content flowed more naturally, there was better lighting and better editing.

Yeah I can't deny she's one of my current favourites, doesn't hurt that she puts up daemons vs IG batreps either as it's very familiar territory for me.
I don't see the point in complaining about youtube videos. If you don't like them then just watch something else, or email the producer directly to influence their content.
Just been watching 'The Warhammer Lady', wow, impressed as hell!
Codex reviews, talks through the aspects of the book she's noticing and commenting on how that will work in game, how it would affect her armies facing it, how it could affect the meta game etc. An actual player talking about her thoughts on the books, not just reading verbatim and adding in humor, but talking as a hobbyist. (I look forward to joeyberry reaching this stage of experience).
Watching the battle reports, carefully explained out, clear and fun to watch.
Subscribed.
(also, given she's a Swedish player, her English and explanations is excellent).
So, The Warhammer Lady for my 40k and War Gamer Girl for my introduction to warmahordes.
That "Warhammer Lady" needs to play some other games. I'd like to see her in a fight to the death with those other gamer girl you tubers.
Cue up the star trek fight music and the Captain Kirk kicks.

She abandoned her Dakka thread long ago. Sucks that people cant be nice, but I can think of hundreds of things Id rather do than watch her "cute" videos.
joey berry is boring. I do mind the beginner stuff, bad lighting or anything like that. I just find her boring.
I find most youtube videos boring. The warhammmer lady is ok but it gets boring too. Both are pleasant to look at though.
I find a lot of youtube beginner stuff just not there yet but its YOUTUBE. Thats what its for. They look like they are having a blast and enjoying what they are doing.
When i want something professional i just listen to a 40kradio podcast.

I chuckled when I read that question, Matt. I took a Korean woman I was dating at the time into a game store, and the first thing she sees was a couple of extremely overweight 20 somethings arguing about whether a Dreadnaught had a Las cannon or Missle launcher. They were both going like their lives depended on it. Then they caught sight of her, standing by me at the cash register and it was like holy crap, look, a woman! And she's a gorgeous Asian! I literaly thought they were going to start spanking in front of her right at their table.
After I got married, my wife came to see how I was doing at a tournament. She was close to 9 months pregnant at the time but buff as hell because we'd both be running three miles a day and working out at the gym. She's part Seminole and gets really exotic looking in the summer when she starts getting dark and is an absolute babe. To make a long story short, she and her sister came over to sit by me and within 5 minutes, somebody was hitting on her. We just about fell over laughing at the twit, he was so dang pathetic, but he actually thought he was being a stud.

Pretty weird to read a thread about myself I'm not going to lie. My videos are beginner orientated and I'm not a professional. I talk a lot of crap but its a personal experience and that's the point.
Jack of all trades Master of none! And I will stay that way as far as wargaming is concerned. I enjoy the entertainment factor to make it less tedious, though not every one gets it but that's just how humor works I guess.
As far as being a female goes, of course it attracts more views in this kind of hobby. That goes without saying but it's not what makes people subscribe and continue to watch because lets face it. There's plenty of prettier girls out there if that's all you're watching for.
The warhammer lady is also awesome and knows her stuff! But it's like comparing me with BTP, just because we're ladies down't mean our content is any where near the same.
