Privateer Press Announces July 10 Start Date for "WARMACHINE: Tactics" Kickstarter

BELLEVUE, WA, July 2, 2013 – Privateer Press announced that Privateer Press Interactive will launch the highly anticipated WARMACHINE: Tactics Kickstarter campaign on July 10. WARMACHINE: Tactics will be a turn-based, squad-level strategy game for PC and Mac developed in cooperation with WhiteMoon Dreams. Privateer Press Interactive will publish the game.

WARMACHINE: Tactics will include a single-player campaign and feature synchronous and asynchronous online multi-player play. The game will launch with two playable factions—Cygnar and Khador. A stretch goal for the Kickstarter campaign, if met, would add Cryx and the Protectorate of Menoth to the game’s launch. WARMACHINE: Tactics will also be expanded with downloadable content.

Privateer Press Interactive was formed in 2013 by Matt Wilson, who is also founder and chief creative officer of Privateer Press, with the mission of bringing the acclaimed gaming worlds of Privateer Press to life in the digital medium.

Privateer Press Interactive’s partner in the project, WhiteMoon Dreams, boasts a veteran team of game developers who have worked on blockbuster titles including the Fallout series, Descent, Ratchet & Clank, Medal of Honor, Command & Conquer, and many others.

“With the July 10 start date set, we’re anxiously counting down the hours and days until the WARMACHINE: Tactics Kickstarter campaign launches,” said Wilson, “but we’ll be dropping more info about the game as the Kickstarter approaches through the Privateer Press website and our social media channels.”

For more information about the WARMACHINE: Tactics Kickstarter campaign, including a teaser video for WARMACHINE: Tactics created by WhiteMoon Dreams, visit http://privateerpress.com/warmachine-tactics.

Spoiler:
Several years ago, Privateer Press teamed up with video game developer WhiteMoon Dreams to create a WARMACHINE video game. After a great deal of effort and considerable expense to themselves, WhiteMoon Dreams produced a playable demo of an action-adventure game that we showed off at Lock & Load and E3 a couple years ago.

During the time it took to create the demo and in the subsequent months as we began our search for a publisher or financier to back this ambitious project, we found that the video game industry had changed. Since then, we’ve seen huge layoffs, closures, consolidation, and a general retreat to a more conservative stance toward new properties in the video game industry. Unless a title already has a successful history in video games or is a Hollywood franchise, it’s no easy task to navigate the publisher gauntlet from pitch to worldwide release. The process is lengthy and full of challenges.

In the past two years, we’ve changed course several times, reinventing our approach to the game in an attempt to get in front of what publishers were looking for. Uncertainty regarding the future of consoles and the untamed frontier of mobile gaming means that what publishers and financiers are willing to risk money on changes moment to moment. Decisions aren’t based solely on the strength or merit of a property—in fact, that’s probably one of the lesser considerations. Rather, a game is chosen for production based on complex market evaluations that can take months or even a year or more. And the results are disproven nearly as often as they are rewarded, as the high number of cancelled projects in the video game industry attests.

We are continuing to pursue the goal of the high budget action-adventure game and are currently entertaining multiple interesting possibilities that may accomplish that goal. Around the first of this year, though, we realized that the fluctuating state of the video game industry meant it would likely be a good while longer before we’d be able to make real progress. What’s more, the situation would probably become even more difficult before beginning to improve. So, we’ve decided to take things into our own hands.

Accessible technology, new modes of financing, and the lack of barriers between artists and their audience have put great power into the hands of independent creators across all mediums. Privateer Press is no stranger to independent publishing—that’s been our M.O. since day one. WhiteMoon Dreams has also successfully operated independently for many years, so much so that they could develop a proof-of-concept for a WARMACHINE game without the support of a publisher. Both companies have a burning desire to create a WARMACHINE video game born out of pure passion to see this world brought to life, so instead of waiting for someone to give us the green light, we’ve charted a new course for the game and we’ve joined forces to make it a reality.

What we’re working on now is something quite different from what was shown before. We don’t need a publisher to get it done, and it’s much closer to the tabletop experience, which we believe existing players of WARMACHINE are really going to appreciate.

Changing course with this video game has been incredibly exciting because of the sudden surge in activity and the measurable progress we see every day. Removing so many of the barriers in front of us means we’ll realize this game sooner rather than later. Privateer and WhiteMoon Dreams together have always dreamed of not just one game, but a library of titles that explore the Iron Kingdoms from end to end, with all the varied experiences one could imagine in that world. We’re taking a huge step in that direction right now, and we’re working our asses off to get it done. The road won’t be without its challenges. The difference with this project, however, is that it won’t be publishers or financiers that are responsible for giving us the green light—it will be the audience for whom we are making the game.

Soon, we will launch a Kickstarter campaign with the hope of raising the capital necessary to fund development of WARMACHINE: Tactics, a turn-based, squad-level strategy game for PC and Mac. WARMACHINE: Tactics will include a single-player campaign as well as synchronous and asynchronous online multi-player play. The game, which will be expanded with downloadable content over time, will ship with two playable factions in multi-player to start—Cygnar and Khador—but our first stretch goal will allow us to also include Cryx and The Protectorate at the game’s launch.

The Kickstarter will be conducted under Privateer Press Interactive, a new entity created to act as the bridge between Privateer Press and WhiteMoon Dreams for the purpose of developing WARMACHINE: Tactics and bringing it to our players. The game is being created as a close collaboration between both companies and will bring WARMACHINE to the world of video gaming with every bit of the same passion and commitment to quality that has made it a success on the tabletop.

We’re incredibly excited to be embarking on this journey, particularly now that we have forged our alliance with WhiteMoon Dreams and have made the decision to achieve the creation of this game with no one to answer to but our players. We hope you will be as excited to see this game made as we are to make it. Stay tuned for more details forthcoming in the upcoming weeks prior to the launch of the Kickstarter campaign. For the moment, here’s a sneak peak of some of the work done so far . . .

Privateer Press Announces Kickstarter Campaign to Fund WARMACHINE Video Game

BELLEVUE, WA, June 26, 2013 – Privateer Press announced the upcoming launch of a Kickstarter campaign to fund WARMACHINE: Tactics, a turn-based, squad-level strategy game for PC and Mac being developed in cooperation with WhiteMoon Dreams. This is a very interesting development considering how the development of the games has seemed stalled for so long.

As an aside, I'm not familiar enough with Cygnar, who is the female Cygnar warcaster at the opening of the video? You can see some very quick shots of the Butcher and I think Denny later, but the first woman eludes me.

I have a feeling they're in need of capital and this game is to generate money for the primary game they started a while ago. Many of the models seem similar quality though, so they may have just shifted direction.

That said, looks like they're taking pointers from X-COM which is interesting.

A lot of questions being answed by Matt Wilson in this thread:

http://privateerpressforums.com/showthread.php?166609-WARMACHINE-Tactics-for-PC-amp-Mac-Coming-soon-to-Kickstarter!

"So, do please come along when we're promoting something new and need photos for the facebook page or to send to our regional manager, do please engage in our gaming when we're pushing something specific hard and need to get the little kiddies drifting past to want to come in an see what all the fuss is about. But otherwise, stay the feth out, you smelly, antisocial bastards, because we're scared you are going to say something that goes against our mantra of absolute devotion to the corporate motherland and we actually perceive any of you who've been gaming more than a year to be a hostile entity as you've been exposed to the internet and 'dangerous ideas'. This is really, really interesting. I don't know if I'll pledge simply because I don't have a PC or MAC that I can game on, but I can't help but wonder how everyone feels about a relatively major company like Privateer doing this.

I think to fair to say that the Internet would explode if GW launched a KS (which honestly I think they should be allowed to do as it helps mitigate risk: I'm looking at you Dreadfleet). Bu in regards to Privateer doing it, how does everyone feel? Do you hate the notion of larger, established companies using KS? Are you fine with it? What say you, dakkanauts?

Haven't people been calling for them to 'just kickstarter it already' for a while? Glad they got to it.

To be fair, it's not like they're launching a miniatures game or board game using this. Like Matt Wilson addressed it, they've been trying to get a video game off the ground for ages now but it's been in publishing hell. PC games cost a bundle, and with Kickstarter funds, they can actually afford to self publish without bankrupting themselves.

Seeing as I've done work for an established company that has used Kickstarter to manufacture stuff, I'm all for it. Gauge's interest and raises fundage at the same time.

I don't see much of a problem with it, as it seems it's going to be the only way to actually get a Warmachine game off the ground.
Hopefully all goes well and it garners more recognition for the tabletop game.

Anyone taking bets on when GW is going to give kickstarter a shot now?

Okay, I have never really been into Warmachine, nor have I ever bought the minis, but I do think they look cool.

Then I saw this. This is frakking awesome. It makes me want to buy some Khador.. and of course play this game. It looks kinda like Final Fantasy Tactics.

Has Whitemoon Dreams done anything before this? Looks like they have some experience at least, question is any of them have experience running a project and controlling costs.

Didn't see any mention of target goal, but may have missed it.

OT: This may be PP's toe into KS territory. If this goes well, we may start seeing more of their core projects moving through this route.

I think the trailers and small gameplay sample look pretty awesome. I'm not a PP fanboy, but from what whitemoon has been able to develop thus far is on par with Space Marine.

Where did you hear this? I'd be all for it as kickstarters (at least the ones I've backed) have been cheaper than the models would have been in the shops. But PP have a pretty established business model and release schedule etc. I'd be very surprised if they did that. Unless there's a reason you think they would go kickstarter for their core products?

Does anyone know when this is supposed to go live?
Maybe I'll try to early-bird this!

Sorry Swabby, I think what you are looking for is, "Finally!"

I know what you are saying though as I recall there being a videogame proposed several years ago and even demo footage out there.

If done right and in a sober manner, I think that they can avoid many of the pitfalls that say Warhammer: Age of Reckoning found itself in; i.e. Late release, limited play experience, low launch distribution, market saturation from similar products.

Armies: Space Marines, IG, Tyranids, Eldar, Necrons, Orks, Dark Eldar.

Speculation. Given they are hyping this and pushing it before their fan base, if it goes well, they may start pursing their own stuff this route. Not necessarily for WMH, but say games like Level 7, Monsterpocalypse, etc. When referring to "core project", meant to say more items they are developing themselves and not licensing out.

Ahh right that's what had me confused, I have no idea about their history with things like Level 7 and what not, hence my confusion because I had assumed you meant WMH/IKRPG, so the established release cycles and what not being messed up by kickstarters just seemed like an odd bit of speculation.

But Monsterpocalypse et al I have no idea about, so it could well be the case/not be the case.

From the looks of it, you're right. They have a lot of development experience but this seems to be their first actual foray into a game.

Me too, but if they're smart, they'll learn from their mistakes, listen to feedback, and do much better next time. Another thing is that Warmachine has a much bigger fanbase than Heavy Gear.

Incidentally, why did the Heavy Gear Assault Kickstarter page get axed? Seems to me it should have been kept up even if the Kickstarter got canceled.

I hope this succeeds, and is good. A video game version of a tabletop game is something I've wanted for a while now (I have no one to play with!).

Also - I hope PP learns the wonders of Kickstarter well, and then next year launches another campaign to raise money to FINALLY get around to really converting things to plastic.

Man, I'm down---even if it turns into Battlechess with Warmachine models.

Give us a 3d graphics engine version of Vassal--and I would probably end up buying more (successful) armies!

Just no in game purchases please--walk the less used road here PP and just give content with a bundle purchase!
