Hey hey! I don't know about the rest of you, but when i paint i always have some music on in the background, what i actually have on changes with my mood but it has to be at least fairly easy going, or just something i'm very familiar with so as not to be distracting.
I was wondering what you listen to? a specific few artist you paint better too maybe? maybe you have a painting playlist of some kind, or just a favorite radio station to have on in the background.
For me, it can change day to day, anything from Iron Maiden to Frank Sinatra, but for long sessions i find the album Lateralus by Tool to be just the right kind of thing to keep me focused.
As i write this I have Anthems by Pure Love on a loop while i paint Boromir, Captain of Gondor. (FunFact: Pure Love front-man Frank Carter is a huge fan of 40k, as seen when he tweeted pics of himself at WW when on tour in Nottingham)
I usually have Netflix or some form of video running in the background.
"Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! ... It’s become the promotions department of a toy company." -- Rick Priestly
It doesn't matter.
I tend to focus on what I'm doing rather than what I'm listening to so I won't hear it, anyway.
If I can consciously hear it, I'm not paying enough attention to what I'm doing - and this will probably result in me having an "accident" of some kind.
I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.
That is not dead which can eternal lie ...
... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.
My girlfriend and I have been painting at Burger Kings - near both of our jobs, air conditioned, and food. Not necessarily good food, but....
I find that the distraction helps me focus....

The reason I bought rules and became a real wargamer was because I wanted a properly thought out structure to govern the action instead of just making things up as I went along.
AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, the Ramones, KISS, Led Zeppelin, Mötorhead, The Supersuckers, Bang Camaro, Go Betty Go, The Donnas, Jett, The Who, Tenacious D, Stephen Lynch, Rolling Stones, Tool, The Kinks, and the Driveby Truckers all tend to occupy my playlists depending on my mood.
I also tend to add a lot of singles from other bands to my playlists, but those are far too many to count. I will also admit that I've listened the original Halo soundtrack several times when painting. It really gets my imagination going and is a great listen.

Music is alright, but I greatly prefer audio books, podcasts, TED talks or lectures, debates and discussions off off youtube.
Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.
I'm starting to feel there is some kind of connection with Heavy Metal and the hobby community Its good to hear what gets everyone in the mood for some painting.
I watch T.V as I work in the living room so I can insure I'm spending time with the family.
Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!
I have TV shows playing in the background that have a lot of dialogue and no real action. It can't be too much comedy either or the laughing will have me jerking about as I paint. I've had it happen plenty of times and learned my lesson. Usually I have The Simpsons, Hell's Kitchen, Kitchen Nightmares, Restaurant Impossible, Little House on the Prairie (shut up, it's an awesome series), the Alien films, the Hannibal series of movies, George Romero's Night/Dawn/Day films, Jaws, Close Encounters, and a large number of other movies on that list. I just put it all on a playlist and have it on random shuffle and just paint the hours away while listening to shows.
The only audio I'll ever play are the BL audiobooks. Very atmospheric and entertaining. Music is too irritating to have on while painting, I find it faaaaar more distracting than entertaining.
i watch battle reports of blue table painting and while i hear them busy im thinking they are doing this wrong they do that wrong and if i get get a headache (from all the mistackes) i switch over usualy: alestorm, acdc, ironmaiden, manowar.
Either the radio or one of my various phone playlists. At the minute I use two.

I watch recorded Top Gear episodes. They never get old because they've made hundreds of episodes. If not in the mood for that, I'll be watching miniwargaming, or genres of youtube videos I'm interested in, longer than 20 minutes. These include Vice, Jay Leno's Garage, war, wealth, historical, economy, culture, religion, nature, and geography documentaries. Yeah, I'm all set for those long hours of painting and modeling.
I will forever remain humble because I know I could have less.
I will always be grateful because I remember I've had less.
I don't paint much anymore, but it's a similar situation when I'm drawing or doing work. First thing I go to is the newest episodes of The Daily Show/Colbert Report and Conan. After that, I end up watching something that doesn't require much commitment on my end. Usually a sitcom, or something more dialog based.
When I listen to music, I listen to pretty much anything in my collection. Ambient, jazz, electronic, downtempo, rap, soul, funk, D&B.
