Stage 1 will be move at a breakneck speed. This will be the buggiest and busiest stage of the beta. A bunch of unfinished features will be disabled whilst we finish them up. Updates will come thick and fast, sometimes as often as multiple updates a day.
If you choose to take part during stage 1 you should expect bugs, lots of balance changes, you shouldn’t get too attached to your character or universe as we may make changes that require you to start from scratch. You should expect the game to be broken at points as we make sweeping changes but you’ll get to enjoy exciting new content added constantly. The engine won’t optimized during this stage of the beta so performance could be poor on some low end machines.
You’ll get to see a bunch of ‘behind the scenes’ content at this stage and provide feedback during this crucial period.
DO take part in this stage if:
- You enjoy testing buggy and unfinished code
- You enjoy providing feedback
- You want to leave your mark on the game
- You just can’t wait any longer
DO NOT take part in this stage if:
- Bugs infuriate you
- You don’t like spoilers
- You can’t stand losing your save
- You want the full Starbound ‘experience’ the first time you play.
Stage two
Spoiler:
Stage 2 will be largely feature complete. You’ll still find the odd bug but they’re unlikely to be game breaking and the chance of you losing your character or save is minimal. The main quest line won’t be in yet but the sandbox experience will be near complete. All sectors of the galaxy will be available including sector X (End game content). Much of the focus in this stage will be on bug fixing, optimization and balance.
DO take part in this stage if:
- You enjoy reporting bugs/bughunting
- You have a low spec computer and want to make sure the game is optimized for it
- You want a complete sandbox experience
- You tried to wait a bit longer but failed
DO NOT take part in this stage if:
- You want to play through the main quest line
- You want to be a Novakid
Stage 3
Spoiler:
Stage 3 is largely about prepping for v1.0, this means finishing up the main quest line and implementing the post beta content. i.e. the Novakids, fossils. By the time stage 3 is complete Starbound should be ready to launch as a finished game. Worry not however, we plan to keep adding new content for at least a year after release, perhaps a lot longer.
DO take part in this stage if:
- You want to give feedback on what will become the finished game
DO NOT take part in this stage if:
- You’d rather wait a litttttle bit longer and play the polished final version
- You’re still busy playing Pokémon X/Y

Yeah, just going to jump in at stage one and see what happens, having partaken in the Payday 2 closed beta I am looking forward to once again be partaking in the extensive testing of a game and seeing it change and grow over time.
As am I! I just hope it doesn't distract me from finals XD

I have been watching this off and on since they announced the start of the project.
I like fantasy but Sci-Fi has always been my go-to.
Switching from flashlight to weapon in the dark is looking painful, will be interesting to see what balancing they have in the game.
They had finished up most of the AI for NPC's and town guards so they have had some time to make things more interesting.
I had participated in Beta's, not sure if I want to feel I had "helped" with the game or wait till done so the whole thing is one big pleasant surprise.
A revolution is an idea which has found its bayonets.

You can hold both flashlight and weapon at the same time if you have a one-handed weapon.

Well, if Terraria is anything to go by, it will enjoy a long stream of free content updates, so if it isn't in now, it may very well be implemented at a later date.

It looks more like terraria then I expected. I was imagining that starbound wouldn't be as crafting focused as terraria, but it looks like it's still very craft oriented. I'll get to see for myself soon anyway, so I could just wait.
Nah, Terraria is okay, but it has a lot of inherent limitations taht Starbound doesn't. To give some examples: it's fantasy, where Starbound is sci-fi, allowing for space explorations and the like;Terraria has much simpler physics and graphics; Terraria doesn't have the lore and backgorund Starbound has, including various species and their histories; etc.
Even just basic mechanics, Starbound does better-- such as being able to equip an item in each hand and quickly swap between items in them. In Terraria, you don't have this sort of advantage. And building/mining appears to be much smoother in Starbound than Terraria as well.
I'm definitely looking forward to this.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Hell, even relatively minor things are improved-- trees fall down when you cut them down, for example, instead of just disappearing.

It's the future, but one of the first things you do is craft stone picks and axes. It's kind of my worry because I was hoping we would start with things like drills and chainsaws seeing as it's the future. At least a laser pick.
Your first mining tool is a matter manipulating device that uses lasers and gak to make matter do stuff.
While you DO have to go through a low-tech phase, that's specifically for plot reasons (you don't have the resources to manufacture high tech goods at first, because for various reasons depending on species you had to escape from your planet with little more than a ship and the shirt on your back).

Plot justifies nothing! I think I would feel better if the matter manipulator was your main mining tool and then you just moved into higher tech versions as you went along. If rather then dropping back to stone tools, you just used the high tech that is on your ship. Like you said you start with a very advanced mater manipulator and you also have a high tech 3d printer inside the ship. What is the point behind temporary being reduce to stone axes if your going to move right back up to cool future stuff. Why have that dip? Is is just because we want the feeling of progression? Also doesn't using stone and wood crafting set a bad president for when the game moves into future devices. Is the forge going to stick around, or are we going to be hammering out a copper laser gun on an anvil? Maybe it won't bug me when I am playing, but it bugs me now.

I'm fairly certain that the Tier system includes better, more complex crafting items-- progressing from table and campfire to a furnace, from a furnace to a forge, from a forge to a machineshop, etc.
But I could be wrong here since I haven't played yet, certainly not that far.

Perhaps the 3d printer's long range iDReaM connection is not reliable enough to transfer the encryption keys necessary for its proper copyright aware usage. So you are back to using stone tools. Damn the pirates!
Anyway, as Melissia said the player character is on the run and crash-lands on a planet. From there you can work your way up from stone tools to the matter manipulator, etc. There's even something like a mech:

I could see being interested in this if the look of it didn't bother me so much. The character sprites strike me as lanky and awkward, they feel like they don't have any joints. Everything is so floaty and chalky. I'd wanna chalk this up to it being a really early stage of development but it's all so cohesive it feels like a real stylistic choice they made. It looks like it's doing some cool stuff, but I'm just not sure I could get past the aesthetics.
Slightly confused as to why you have to go through the whole crafting table-bow-furnace thing when you just beamed down onto the planet from your SPACESHIP.

Because you left the keys onboard?
Anyway, I just bought this - because why not?
I'll see how possible it is to set up an "always-on" server later tonight. Although they say there's a command line version of the server available, their current documentation only covers the Windows GUI server at the moment. My main concern for the time being is white-lists, but it is a Beta.
Also, though I think you start with a sword (it looks like a laser sword even) of some kind, for some reason you can't hunt with it. I have yet to figure out why not.
