Who would it be and why? For myself, There are a couple I lean towards, Brutus. Because it would be interesting to hear his views on Republic and the need of it's preservation, Saladin, just because I think the man was cool, or an intelligent and observant citizen of any class, pre 1500 to get a ground eye view of life back then.

Vladimir Putin is the most interesting political figure on the planet today.
If restricted to 'celebrity' I cant think of any i would desperately want to meet, though I can think of many I would not like to.

I would like to meet many religious central figures, I would also like to "observe" some of the great evils of human history. If I could be a fly on the wall and see what motivates people to be like that.

Same kind of thing goes with many historical figures that have been used to inspire people today. What would the founding fathers truly think of our country today? What would Shakespeare think of Hollywood? What would Beethoven think of Elvis Presley? What would Sun Tzu think of Warhammer 40K?

I have to agree with this. I absolutely can't stand Shakespeare, and I'd imagine that a lot of that has to do with the awful way we had to read along in classes.
As for my vote, I'd like to spend the day with Dostoevsky. Not to talk about his books or his views or anything. Just to drink with him. Considering there isn't much separating most of his books from 700 pages of suffering and alcohol abuse, the man was probably a tank.
Although if we could go with someone a little more recent, Jean Giraud. He may have died last year, but he's important enough.

Off-topic: To be fair, a lot of texts studied at that level are frankly irrelevant to language as a whole (not that I would consider Macbeth among them), but that doesn't devalue it as a good play. It's as interesting to watch as any film/TV show out there today, which is more than can be said of a lot of set texts . Compared to the likes of Of Mice and Men and Far From The Madding Crowd, Macbeth is both far more entertaining and relevant. And what you say about it not being useful to a lot of people can be said of any compulsory subject. There are plenty of people who have no use for trigonometry or physics that still had to study them.
On topic: Shakespeare, actually, as just watching/listening to him work would be amazing. A day with Churchill during WW2 would be fascinating. JFK or Krushchev during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Napoleon I, Wellington. There are so many I'd love to meet, these are just a few off the top of my head.

I'd want to go observe the first Crusaders honestly. A rowly bunch of misfits they were. I imagine it was something like a prime time sit com but with more blood and dismemberment.

Jesus is a good answer. Assuming that in this magical scenario, we are able to speak the same language/dialect, then I bet Chaucer would be a fun guy to hang with.

I ould want to know how he did it, and to learn more about who he was, beyond the Tiger Ace, and how he saw the war and life.
