Greetings,

I figure this can be an ongoing thread where we talk about what games we played and what we thought about them. This can include wargames, board games, card games, video games, table-top RPGs, or whatever.

During Christams vacation, I typically get togheter with my family and we play a lot of games. Here is what we played over the break....

1. Phase 10- Card Game- Makers of Uno- I hate this game.

2. Mice and Mystics- Boardgame- Unknown maker- A light dungeon hack except your are mice. Fun and light. Interesting mechanics for how the monsters operate.

3. Ugg-Tech- Fantasy Flight- A fun game where one person tries to instruct the others on how to build things using grunts and beatings. highly amusing, but I'm not sure about its replay ability.

4. 5 of a Kind- Board Game/Trivia- Endless Games- You move around the board and have to name of 5 things in a category to keep going. Example: 5 Star Trek races, 5 celebrities on Dancing with the Stars, 5 soft drink brands, etc. Okay, but not super challenging for a trivia junkie like me.

How about you?

While down in Louisville visiting friends and family for the holiday, I got together with some old friends and played a pair of games.

Coup. An interesting card game based on bluffing. it was interesting, but not a huge fan.

King of Tokyo. The players are giant monsters thrashing Tokyo. Fast paced, simple, fun, dice based game. Being a big Godzilla fan, I might be biased, but I had a blast. Will look into picking up my own copy.

I also played some apples-to-apples kids/junior with my folks/son/nephews. Not a bad family game.

My brother gave me a copy of power grid, but I haven't played it yet.

A lot of really terrible board games for kids (my son loves board games, but some of the ones he likes are terrible).

Also played a lot of good board games, too with him. Stratego, checkers, Sorry, Monopoly even once.

Couple games of magic with my son.

Got in a handful of games with some friends just prior to xmas of 40k. Got my Tau in against some Dark Angels.

Also been playing the crap out of War Thunder recently. Hella fun, even if the Russian planes are OP beyond all gak.

Several games of Deadzone, not sure how many.

I've spent a lot of time on Lego Star Wars 3 on the 360, it's just so simplistically brilliant.

I'm dying to get some games of 40k in at some point soon, skirmish games are all well and good but I need some massive-scale destruction. Should be heading down to a monthly game club this weekend to scratch that itch.

This past week, the wife and I have been playing a lot of

DnD. We're attempting to do a 2 person, 4 PC party campaign, with each of us switching who DMs occasionally, to keep things interesting.
Firefly the Board game. Fun board game where the face of the cover sums it up: get a crew, find jobs, keep flying. Would probably be a lot more intensely competitive if we had more players, but hey.
GoT the LCG. Played a couple games with the wife, who is terrible at, and doesnt like "intrigue" games.

Other than that, ive been switching between Neverwinter online, Dark Souls, Demon's Souls

I have been wanting to play some "classic" 40k (ok, just 5th edition, but still), as well as start up a new Warmachine army... but we cant get everything we want right?

Played a fun board game last night called Space Alert.

You are part of a ship, you and your crew have to deal with certain threats that occur during the game. However, you pre-plan your moves. It is a cooperative game, everyone vs. the game.

10 minutes of franticly trying to figure out who is doing what where, followed by 10-20 minutes of hilarity as you realize how badly everyone muffed it up!

Edit: Oh, we also played Farkle. A mostly mindless dice rolling game.

On Sunday I played the last game of 40k (technically 30k) ever (well that's the plan) before I sold the last of my collection. My Sons of Hours vs a horde of bugs backed up by a couple of carnifex and a hive tyrant. Pretty cinematic battle, Mortiat kind of ruined the left flank and ended up killing a carnifex, 3 Nid warriors and a load of gaunts. I had a load of reavers in the centre who were eventually massacred by swarms of bugs. Then my awesome centurion siege breaker commander killed the Hive tyrant in CC and managed to hold off the guards. In the end I lost but it was fun enough end to gaming.

Good festive boardgames day last week. Got a game of "Twilight Struggle" in with an old gaming buddy who got it for Xmas. Great stuff. It's a seriously impressive piece of design, managing to be a fairly large-grained simulation of half a century of Cold War coups, brush wars, propaganda, space race, etc., but staying fast-moving and exciting. He won, largely thanks to Chernobyl and Solidarnosc nobbling my popularity in Europe.

Also squoze in a great game of Settlers of Catan, naturally. My girlfriend has totally learned the art of the subtle victory there. "Only six victory points, see, I'm no threat, only six victory points... oh, what's this? I now have Longest Road, and a couple of one-VP cards in my hand? That makes ten doesn't it?"

Plus Skyline 3000 and Love Letter. Won both of those though.

Got in a few games of Icehouses last night for NYE too.

Digital games: bits of Minecraft, plus my usual daily addictions (online Scrabble and online Agricola). Planning on playing Shank tonight, and either Papers Please or Stanley Parable tomorrow.

Since the 21st, I've played the following:
Chrononauts (a card game where you try to change history to accomplish missions or personal goals) it was a good game, might have to look into it. There are a few expansions that push the timeline forward or backward.

Gloom, a game where you .take your family as miserable as possible and kill them off while you try to make your opponents' families as happy as possible before you kill them off. I own this game, and I've been meaning to get the expansions.

Pandemic, board game from Zman Games where you try to stop four diseases from killing the world's population... we lost :(

Small World Underground, an alternate game world from the makers of Small World, plays the same, just different races and special abilities.

Elder Sign, a board game by ffg, like Arkham Horror, but with cards instead of a board. Played three times, won all three times. Very close games.

Flames of War Cold War rules written by mwincboo very fun rules that improve upon the flames of war ruleset.

HeroClix
X-wing
Warmachine

Will be playing Bolt Action tomorrow and Warmachine on Friday

Friday, I played Warmachine and Hordes. It's picking up steam(punk) at my store. So we've got a few new players, and I didn't want to smash them into the ground with my normal troll list, so with the exception of Whelps and Krielstone Bearers, I took things I've never really used like a Blizter, Winter Troll, Storm Troll, and Grim Angus...

Really fun game against a Circle army that can be deadly if played right (from what I can tell), gave the guy some tips on what he could have done better.

Tomorrow is HeroClix, Thursday is Endless Fantasy Tactics, Friday is more Warmachine, and Saturday is DnD.
