Boosting Space Marine Biker
|
Hi guys
I recently got one of my friends into 40k and he's borrowing my tau till he builds up his own army. I was just wondering how you all got into it
I got into it quite young ( I was the annoying kid that didn't really know the rules and fielded what was cool :p ) I always walked past the store that used to be rammed and thought it was so cool, and then I played firewarrior on the ps2 and was hooked I went into the store the next day had my intro game and brought some space marines and I still love em 10 years on
Wish I kept my first models though I've only got one of the poor guys left :(
So guys fire away !!

Originally, I actually hated W40K. My only exposure to it was just the Ultramarines and Imperial Guard, which I didn't take any interest into.
Then I stumbled into a page about the Chaos Gods fluff around five years ago or so. I love Lovecraft, and the general aesthetics of Chaos Space Marines dragged me in. Then I also soon learned to love the loyalists such as the Imperial Fists and Salamanders, along with the Horus Heresy in general.
Just never liked the Imperial Guard. They're more interesting than the Ultramarines for sure, just they come off fairly dull. Likely the vehicle design.

I stumbled onto it in a PC gamer back in 2008-2009 somewhere. Thought 'Hey, that looks cool.' Played it. Instantly fell in love. Things went from there. Took a break to do other things, but overall my fanaticism was such that it created a rather nice meta.

Started with Space Crusade many moons ago. Then I found a 2ed Eldar codex in one of our Art rooms at school and I discovered this wonderful complex game set in the same universe.
3ed dropped 2 weeks later and I've been hooked since.

After nearly 7(yes, that's right) years of on-and-off playing Dawn of War: Dark Crusade, alone and later with a group of friends, one of those friends decided to start playing the tabletop together with his brothers. They actually visited me to tell me about this and made me join as well.
I regret nothing.

My initial exposure was in my late teens, two good friend of mines, schoolmate at that time introduced me.
At first one was talking bout nids and the other space wolves. I really didn't like how marines looked. I got into collecting when my nid friend suvgested we split a box of battle for macragge.
I started looking at the Ultramarines and never looked back. I got a little into the fluff then continued collecting for two editions till I started playing in 6th Ed. I blame my two friends for getting me into 40k

92 or 93 my buddy Eric showed me this cool box set he bought with all these SM and orks. We played every RPG under the sun then, D&D, FASA stuff, Palladium, Amber (diceless rolepaying yeah no kidding), Rifts, seriously if it had books we played it. Anyways I played 40k with him once and loved it. I bought like a 2000 point Eldar army for like $300 new. Awesome good times ensued. Then in 95 I went to the USMC and sold the army for $50 bucks I think.
Now in the next 15 years I still played a lot of tabletop roleplay its my roots. Its my love L5R is my most favorite thing ever but all my friends at my age have obligations. I have 3 kids my buddies all have kids we all work crazy hours. So it became so hard to schedule 6-8 hour blocks of time for role playing. So last May my RPG itch was insatiable and I remembered 40k. I thought maybe this could be my creative outlet,
I almost always GM'd. I love to create a story. To create fictional history is the bee knees to me. Sadly I'm a verbal person who neither has the brains or discipline to write.
Wow I'm really rambling on here. Anyways I picked up 40k again. I found the painting to enjoyable now. I hated it as a teenager. The game though really did it for me. I like to play narrative scenarios that have a feel for them. Victories and loses are no issue. Tactics are a big deal to me though.
So that's how I found the game and then rediscovered it.

It was back in the nineties... I was already a roleplayer and one day the newspaper stand had this "paint miniatures" promotion, with assorted models (i think from heroquest), brush and paints. And a brochure advertising whfrp, whfb and 40k... I searched and found a store, wd, sm models to start... It was second edition... Long, long, long time ago...

Due to my best mate I picked up the Assault on Black Reach starter set. From there it kinda rapidly expanded to several armies in those past 2.5 years. I usually like painting more due to me being a sore loserat times. I hate it when my vehicles explode on turn one.

What initially introduced me to 40K as a whole was a secondary school friend. I bought some IG and played a few games, but then kinda just stopped with the wargaming side of it. But the fluff always held my interest, and I read a lot of BL books and played the DoW games.
What got me properly into the wargaming side, as I am presently, was a combination of my longstanding intrerest in 40K and a relisation that I could use a hobby other than the vidya. It also helped that I found the SoB to such a cool army.

Well, some I my friends was playing, and asked me if I thought about joining them. Having seen the pricing, but not played, I was in great doubt. However, I was a member of a local gaming club where we split the contribution and so I had a small starting value. I bought the 4th ed Necron codex, a Lord and 2 Destroyers (the store was out of Warriors...) and got stuck. That was about 4 years ago or so, haven't left the hobby since.

My buddies and i got into fantasy after we bought a white dwarf for the D&D articles it had in it. Yes, The early White Dwarf was an actual gamers magazine with real articles about a variety of different games.
We saw the models advertised in it and told out parents we wanted some and how cheap they were. Imagine our surprise when my parents explained the difference between English pounds and U.S. dollars. They helpd us order with the correct prices and we watched and chased the UPS truck for a week or so till it finally stopped at my house.
After playing fantasy for a while we eventually got into 40k and over the years, I graduated to 40k and left fantasy behind. Someday, I might regress back to try it again.
All this starting back in the early 80s. My how time flies. If only I could go back.

I discovered games workshop when I was 10 years old. I and my brothers were going to get into Warhammer Fantasy after playing Heroscape for 2 years. We went to a local shop that sold it and then learned not only the insane prices but, the SIZE of the things. Having played Heroscape which is about a 30-32 mm size game. We could not imagine having to assemble and paint those tiny little minis. We later got into 40k after I started watching Miniwargaming WAAAAGH Batreps.

I brought a space marine bike and spent the next year re-painting it over and over before i decided to stop spending money on Pokemon and start buying some more marines to go with my very lonely bike.

Well my first exposure to GW products was with the Lord of the Rings. My one friend bought some of the minis to paint when I was young then I got into it and got the mines of moria pack for my birthday or christmas (can't remember) and so I painted some of those up never played the game because I was to young and then bought some more urukhai and stuff then stopped for a long long time.
Years later my other friend and his dad introduced me to Fantasy I played a few games but wasn't much into all the rules seemed rally complicated to me.
A few years later AGAIN I started looking into getting into fantasy or 40k. 40k seemed to be easier to me and I liked the models better. I was going to buy the AOBR box but then DV was coming out so waited for that and bought it. Sold the Chaos side and kept the space marines to play as standard marines. Bought Tau shortly after their release (I was originally going to buy Tau but didn't have the rulebook hence why I got the DV box) and now startin Eldar while rounding off my other armies.
I also play Fantasy now too though and once I hit 2000 points with Skaven and 1500 with Eldar I will probably stop collecting. That gives me 3 decent 40k armies to play and my buddy just started necrons so I don't need anymore. Still fun to play.
That was a little longer than I though

I used to build model ships and aircraft as a little kid. The same model store where I got my stuff also sold Warhammer. I immediatly fell in love with it (especially Lizardmen, Aztec lizards riding dinosaurs ftw) but it was too expensive. A few years ago, I got my hands on Dawn of War: Soulstorm and I loved the game and the universe it portrayed. At some point I remembered that Warhammer originally was a miniature wargame, and I looked it up on the internet. And now that I had some more pocket money on hand, I decided to take the plunge and get the Dark Vengeance starter set. I absolutely loved it and a while later I had also gotten my hands on the WHFB and FoW starter sets.

I think a year or two ago when THQ had their going out of business sale, they had this gicantic sale of like all games THQ for 25! I was like dang and i bought. Scrolling through the games that I had got I saw this giant green Orc (Ork). I was like hmm this is cool and i downloaded it. Played a game as the Orks and loved it and played the campaign. While looking for help online for a mission I came across a Miniwargaming video of Orks vs Tyranids and just went on a spree of watching them. Came across DV and I am still pretty new but, I have gotten to reading books and have an IG army.
