Well Prodos have (just about) brought the wargame back from the grave

Modiphius is now trying to do the same for the RPG

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/modiphius/mutant-chronicles-3rd-ed-rpg

The Mutant Chronicles Kickstarter is a re-boot of the amazing techno-fantasy roleplaying game from the same team who produced the successful Achtung! Cthulhu Kickstarter.

We’re raising money to pay for stunning full colour, hard cover books for the settings and rule books starting with the rules and core setting book Mutant Chronicles: Dark Symmetry. We plan to deliver the core book PDF in July, and the print version in August. Backers will receive pre-print PDF's to assist with proof reading in June.

Mutant Chronicles was one of the bigger names in gaming in the 1990's with the Doom Trooper collectible card game translated in to 16 languages, three boardgames, two video games, the massive Warzone miniatures game and the Mutant Chronicles 1st and 2nd Edition roleplaying games with more recently a Hollywood movie, Fantasy Flight Games pre-painted miniature game and last year the reboot of Warzone by Prodos Games. Watch our video for examples of the stunning art from the world.

The Mutant Chronicles story took you on this full throttle dieselpunk sci-fi ride through a solar system beset by corporate intrigue and the invasion of a terrible dark alien force. With technology failing due to the insidious effects of the Dark Symmetry humankind must fight back against the Dark Legion hordes whilst dealing with in-fighting and conspiracy from within.

The Solar System is a roaring mayhem of death and war. The surfaces of the inner planets have been swept clean by the violent onslaught of the dark legions storming hordes of Nepharites, Razides, Pretorian Stalkers and Undead Legionaries. In the enormous cities of the far and distant future, heretics devoted to the destruction of humankind stalk the dark backstreets and gloomy alleys spreading their teachings of greed, jealously and war [From the 2nd Edition Back Cover]

Here's the first few Stretch goals! As you'll see below we next want to fund the Corporate Guides, the next main setting book: DARK LEGION which carries the story forward some 700 years to the time of the original roleplaying game and then DARK SOUL (the in depth guide to the Apostles and Dark Legion). We'll be upgrading the main setting books to full cover hardcover later on. Remember - if we unlock hardcover, full colour versions of the books, your pledge or Add On is automatically upgraded for free!

The Dark Symmetry, The Dark Legion, Guide to the Dark Soul, and Dark Eden. Is that a theme in Mutant Chronicles? Darkness, I mean. Because to the uninitiated like me it seems a bit silly to have four books all with "Dark X" in the title.

I am very interested in this campaign, but not enough to make the first post which by default means I'd be the Keeper of the Thread in terms of updates.

Congratulations Orlando - we're counting on YOU!

I'm sure I can give it a go at least once a day

(but if they make the frontpage as messy as Prodos did for warzone I shall sit in the corner and cry)

I don't think it will be messy, but it will get a bit complicated, maybe?

Their last campaign (Achtung! Cthulhu) ended up with a lot of potential add-ons and what-nots...

I am not interested in backing this but had to comment on that bottom picture.

I just love the contrast between the 2 characters. One has almost a disdainful detachment, while the other is obviously just loving what he's doing. It's an awesome bit of art.

Its actually been kept pretty clean and concise so far. The dark theme of course follows the main baddy's the Dark legion. Although its no means the theme for all the books. There will be one source book for each major faction of the universe appropriately named to match the faction.

The art on the Kickstarter page is really flavorful and fun.

Once they preview the minis, I may have to commit to add some Capitol heroes to my force...

No wargames these days, more DM/Painting.

I paint things occasionally. Some things you may even like!

Just down for the core PDFs right now. Waiting to see what the minis add-ons look like (I would be down for a few more odds and ends to port in to Warzone). But if they manage to unlock some of the faction guides I will probably up it to PDF Master in a heartbeat. And there is a better than even chance that I will splurge for the hard copy before this thing ends.

In almost every RPG KS I've backed to date, the printed stuff always ends up being a pretty thing to pop on my shelf. I've been running RPGs from a tablet or laptop for years now. So for sheer utility, I want all the PDFs I can get my dirty mits on.

But the core book will be a nice little treat to pop on my shelf with my other acquisitions. Part of me is entertaining the thought of grabbing the deluxe edition so it can sit next to my Exalted 3E book and look suitably stylin'. But if I can't end up fitting the dead tree stuff in to my budget, then I'll probably just grab PDFs and a few minis instead. But I do hope I can find at least enough for the core book (my shelf would look empty if it didn't have all possible editions of Mutant Chronicles/Warzone sitting on it ).

Update #1: Mutant Chronicles - BOOM!

Well that was one hell of a day!

Last year we funded Achtung! Cthulhu in 26 hours - to the sum of £8,000 and went on to unlock 11 books, 49 minis and lots of merchandise. As I write it's only 10 hours since we launched and already we're at £23,000 (I had to edit that several times as I wrote this!). I have a feeling we'll be getting a lot more stretch graphics prepared tomorrow!

So first of all a HUGE HUGE thanks to all of you who've been bugging us for months about when we were going to launch this, those of you who've been playtesting our revisions of revisions of playtest rules, answered endless surveys and of course those of you who've keep the Mutant Chronicles universe alive all these years. We couldn't have done it without any of you and now begins a mad 40 days and 40 nights until Sunday March 8th at 8pm - that's just under 5 weeks to fund the books, accessories, minis and cool stuff.

Today I did an interview over Skype with Fredrik Malmberg who was the CEO of Target Games who first launched Mutant Chronicles and is now the CEO of Paradox Entertainment (the guys that own the brand). He was really pleased to see our success and excited to see what we could do next. You can listen to it in the audio just posted under 'Would You Like To Know More'.

One thing we did with the Achtung! Cthulhu Kickstarter and we'll do again is try to answer all your queries as quickly as we can - so whether it's a personal message or comment keep them coming and we'll do our best to explain whatever it is you need help with.

Over the coming days and weeks we'll be unveiling sets of minis, new artwork, contents of books, closeups of layout design, new pledges covering just the guide books or artwork for newly unlocked books, new gaming accessories and much more so keep an eye out for updates. We've already unlocked the Player's Guides for the PRINT MASTER Pledges and it looks like we'll hit the Stretch Goal for the free upgrade of the Dark Symmetry Core rules & Setting book to full colour hardcover pretty soon so they'll be lots to talk about tomorrow.

I'm tweaking the Stretch Goals tonight or tomorrow morning - we're bringing forward one of the Guides (Imperial!) to break things up as the Dark Legion Setting goal was an error and too low. So if we hit £34k overnight you'll know we did it!

This week we're making some changes to the Alpha playtest rules based on the final survey and then we'll be in to Beta. I'll be posting a video or audio talking about it this weekend. We'll aim to post something every few days talking about different aspects of the system.

Finally here's something new for you - the Twisted Marionette is a product of the Dark Symmetry's malign effect on buildings, spaceships and orbitals. Infecting the systems at all levels, the more powerful manifestations of the Dark Symmetry are able to create bizarre mockeries of human forms from the lashing cables torn from conduits and ducting.

Thanks for posting the news guys! We're almost at the hardcover goal and unlocking more Add On's today and tomorrow. Bit of a tweak on the Stretch Goal will bring the Imperial and other guide books forward!

We're going to upload some minis designs soon and will show them off shortly. Some will be automatically available, others will be unlocked.

This is me setting up an entertainment center at my ma's a few weeks back.

This reboot does look really enticing, I had always wanted to check this out as a younger man but couldn't find much interest from a gaming group. Now may very well be the time.

I want every single one of those books, in print. Preferably in soft cover, because I intend to sleep with them, just like I slept with my first edition Warzone rulebook as a kid.

Just to add a few comment tidbits.

Chris Birch, Modiphius about 6 hours ago wrote:@Grinder - hopefully tomorrow for some first minis....
@Craig - we're tweaking the Alpha to become the Beta rules this weekend, so I'll be doing a video or audio about it this weekend to discuss them first. Just been reading the draft of the first intro adventure!

I think the miniature previews will help pick up a bit of add-on cash (I know I'm chomping at the bit to see some characters, even though I think I'm only going to go in for one pack).

And I can't wait to pick up the beta rules (I was in the Alpha but never got a chance to run it, but it looked like a fairly solid system). I'm most interested in seeing the chargen system, I hope they retain a bit of the lifepath stuff. Making Mutant Chronicles characters was practically a game unto itself.

And just a little over £2k until the Imperial book is unlocked. Hopefully the miniature reveal will carry us a good distance past and on toward the Dark Legion book.

First character renders are up on the KS page
Hi everyone congratulations and massive thanks for helping us bust through the first main stretch goal in under 48 hours! Last night we unlocked the £28k stretch goal to upgrade the Dark Symmetry Core Book in to a full colour hardcover for free! Still can't believe we nailed it that fast!

We tweaked the stretch goals as promised and the next goal is now the Imperial Guide book (which as I write we're 2/3's of the way there) and then we'll be in to the Dark Legion book. I may have interesting news later today on that!

Here's of the first renders of some Heretic figures from Prodos for those of you who are eagerly awaiting the miniatures - plenty more to come!

Well be unveiling some more Add On's today and tomorrow :-)

These are apparently Heretics.

Chris answered someone's question about the Life Path mechanics too

Yes we'll be making the original lifepath system more robust, more in depth and more flavourful, you really could be a high flying exec who ends up on his arse in the streets scrabbling for help from anyone...who knows what dark things you might resort to just to survive.

Urgh, swift upticks usually make me nervous in a KS campaign. I swear I had looked away for about an hour and the thing swung up by £1.5-2k in that time. Has another £1500 pledge level been taken? I noticed two of the three are claimed now, so maybe that's it.

Either way, hopefully this is a pledge in good faith and we don't end up see a top-level pledge roller coaster. Here's hoping the fanatical folks spending large amounts were some of the playtesters for the Alpha so that the beta reveal on the weekend doesn't spook 'em.

But if this funding sticks, yeah! Another book down and another step closer to me begging my wife to up to Print Master.

Update #4: Imperial Guide Book UNLOCKED!

They started it, so here's the first Guide book funded - Imperial!

Now we have interesting opportunity I wanted to share. We've been listening to all your comments about the split between the Dark Symmetry core book setting and Dark Legion setting book. We think can include the necessary material in the core book - bumping the page count up by 100 pages at not extra cost to you all. The weight will change a little for working out add ons, but postage won't change for those just ordering the core book.

This would mean we can reduce the next Stretch Goal (for the Dark Legion Setting book) and the core book will then cover the whole storyline - yes and Cybertronic! It will also mean we won't need the hardcover stretch goal for the book either and we can focus on the shorter goals for the rest of the guides. There will still be a Dark Eden book later on as this covers much bigger events, as well as the return to Earth. We have some other awesome books to add in to which will mean the 'all the book pledges' won't be affected (and if anything will get more valuable).

Let us know what you think in the comments and we'll make a decision tomorrow - I just wanted to let you know that we've been listening to comments on Facebook and here and considering options that help us all!
