Since November when my son and I got into 40k for the first time...I've spent roughly $5000 on our models.

Am I crazy?

If you include WHFB, around the $4000 mark, but I have been collecting for quite a long time. Haven't been buying a hell of a lot these days and when I was a kid my spending was mostly limited by the money I could earn doing chores.

For me to beat up the war gaming monkey, including tournament registrations, club fees, models, books, gaming aids, carrying cases, paints, brushes, and other assorted modelling supplies probably in the range of 4000 on my two armies. I blame the summer I didn't bring an army with me to my summer job, ended up spending probably 1500 that year on plastic crack.

Probably around $1000, for five armies. That being said, I live in a college town, and it's pretty easy to pick up an entire army for a song when the financial aid runs out late in the semester...

No where near as much as you guys. I don't have a job, so my money income is chores, birthday and Christmas. So paint, Horus Rising, Dark Angels Tactical and Terminator Squad (cheap off eBay) and a plasma gun off a friend, I've probably spent about $82.10. Huh... First time I totaled it...

On armies - around $2500 AUD. 4 armies.
SM, eldar, IG and GK.

On rules/codices, another couple of hundred (stopped buying rulebooks or armybooks new with 4th ed). Stopped buying new minis with 5th ed.

Replacement cost is different from what it cost me to assemble it.

Between me and the wife, enough to have bought a decent house or a really nice car.

I went from having a handful of derpy metal Tyranids as a prepubescent kid to needing to use a toolshed to store everything.

What am I even doing with my money?

40k, it costs your time, it costs your money, it costs your life (wife).

Well, I cannot quantify how much I spent over the years. I guess too much.

10s of thousands. But I have greatly limited my collection and spending to a more modest amount.
My current army is very small unlike my last collections. Waste of time and money. 1 army per game is enough.

I try to limit the spending to about a $100 monthly. But it's been over 8 years and that's about $10,000.

Less then I've spent on drinking.

So overall, I'd call it a win.

LOADS.

I'm more concerned that I let some mates talk me in to buying more WHFB stuff (£100+) for a friendly tourney recently and that turned out to be anything but friendly!

I could have bought some Jetbikes, Vypers and a grav tank or two!

Figuring out how much I spent is more math then I want to do. Adjusted for inflation, at full price, I might be over $10k. But I’ve been collecting slowly for more then two decades. Large chunks of my collection (most of the WHFB stuff) was picked up when I was getting an employee discount at my FLGS.

Having a massive collection is fine. Reasonable even, if accumulated over time. As long as you pay the bills, what you do with your extra money is not an issue. Are you having fun? Spending quality time with friends and family? Then no problems.

I've been in the hobby since February last year, by now I could have and should have bought a car instead.

Lots, enough to buy a really good new German saloon at the least, that is without inflation correction even. Ofcourse this is oevr a period of more than 2 decades so it's not allt hat bad but still, there's a reason I have resorted to rigidly adhering to a yearly budget for gaming

Ouch, not a good question.
20 years of 40k....

Black Templar: At least a full company with all the trimmings... maybe $2500

Chaos Space Marines: Enough for 4 full 3000pt+ armies for each chaos god. maybe $3500

Imperial Guard: Enough for at least 6 platoons (2 ten man squads and command squads), 5 chimeras, 5 hellhound type tanks, 6 odd tanks, 6 odd artillery, 2 aircraft, some 40 odd various models... $2000

Grey Knights: 3000 pts easy. $1000

Inquisitors: Got pretty much every model with their various warband flunkies.... 40 some-odd models. $1000

Total(ish): $10,000 = $500 a year?

Scary stuff...

I've kept a log of every item I bought to use in 40k.
Since the start of 2011, I've spent around £3,500.
So, over 38 months, that's around £100 per month.

That's for magnets, models, glue, paints, scenery, KR cases, codices, etc. If it's for 40k, it's been added to the list.

6000 pts - Harlies: 1000 pts - 4000 pts - 1000 pts - 1000 pts DS:70+S+G++MB+IPw40k86/f+D++A++/cWD64R+T(T)DM+
