After reading the new WD I was left a little perplexed; The Unbound armies seem stranger than I thought they would be . They don't adhere to the Allies matrix which I thought they still had to, but you can apparently take WHATEVER you may have and put it together in an army, which seems to go completely against the reasoning they had behind making the Unbound armies available in the first place; a narrative approach to list building. So you can take a Hive Tyrant along with Ghazghkull and Yarrick, which is just silly.

What are you guys' thoughts on this? Good/bad?

What are some silly lists that you can think of?

I was thinking about a list with something like 19 Venoms and maybe 7 Ravagers...should be fun.

Evolve, overcome, consume.

I was thinking nothing but space monkeys
nothing
but
monkeys

Or an army consisting of purely Warp Spiders/drop pods
That would be very fun to play.

Wait they ignore the ally matrix completely? As in, they're are all considered to be one army without worrying about being battle brothers/come the apocalypse/everything in between? That does sound stupid even by GW standards.

On a more realistic note, not being restricted by three HS/FA slots for sisters sounds interesting...

I have less than one org chart, and I can't afford to buy a bunch of units so unbounded means very little to me. I imagine a lot of players are in this boat with me.

Is it just me? Or are a lot of these unbound list just spamming one it two things?

Actually, as I understand it, the other reason behind this is to support players like you, people without huge giant apocalyptic armies. The ability to use models you wouldn't otherwise be able to is the light side of this coin. The spam and the horrible cheese will be the dark side.

I have a number of odd models lying around that I'd love to throw into games. Could be fun!

As far as I was aware they most definitely did have to follow the allies chart. Suggesting anything else is surely nothing short of mental?

Because often space marines fight along nids. And I quite often see a grey knight paladin saving the life of a plague bearer?!

Think it through guys...

Assume two things

1) No matter whatever you figure out someone has something more scandalous.

2) Since its an option you will never see anything listed in any list unless you wanted to play this already.

Whatever a full contingent of Imperial Guard troops (or whatever the feth they're called now) consists of in terms of foot soldiers + Wolf Priest + Saga of the Hunter to come in on my opponent's table edge. Then... tarpit...

Or the Wolf Priest plus whatever unit in the game has the most individual troops in it just to be a dick to my mates.

Unbound realy doesnt mean much to me unless i want to run an ork wagon list the way i see it needs to be played - battlewagon spam with kannons and/or looted wagon supporting fire. Right now it doesnt work unless i use dakkajets/lootas, which are late to the party or unreliable respectively.
Dont like lootas, dont like being mandated to bikernob - but the way orks with in 6th at least and current dex im forced to do both or be insanely surprised im not tabled by turn 3 lol.

Heres to hoping 7th helps my greenskinned badasses!!!

An ork with an idea tends to end with a bang.

Swastakowey did a thread on that, had a nice long chat about how to outfit them. Then it was pointed out that fliers and Eldar would tear them apart but it'd still be fun. Don't have my codex but basic Lone Wolf, two Fenrisian Wolves and a drop pod dedicated transport. At 1850 points (if my math is correct on point cost which I'm not sure it is), you can field twenty four with a handful of points left over, maybe squeeze in some combi-meltas and combi-flamers. I don't care what your army is, twelve drop pods coming down on turn one are gonna box you in pretty effectively. Plus, if they blow up the drop pods, chances are that a number of their troops will get blown up as well.

The totally free nature of Unbound means you don't really have a list as such, just a selection of models that you think will be fun to play. It could be anything.

As such, this thread is more of a Discussion than a List idea, so I will move it to 40K Discussions.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Hoiw 'bout this; 21 Heralds of Tzeentch with Malefic Daemonology in a 2k list! You'd probably need to spend another 3000$ on Daemons, but at least the list is silly!

When I got my first army (as someone who has never been that into fluff) the FoC was like a goal to start with.I knew what section to look in and which units I needed to start playing.

If I had started when unbound came into existence I would have no idea where to start. GW employees can pretty much say, choose whatever you want, they are all usable together. Thats the entire range of models of to choose from for just one army.

Just seems so much of a hassle. Its a problem Flames of War has for new comers. Too much to sort out at the beginning. Which book/time period/company etc. Too much for a new player in my opinion. Especially with little knowledge about the game to begin with.

In saying that, does an unbound list need to take a legal platoon? Or can they just an army of platoon command squads?

Because an army of platoon command squads with sniper rifles and a horde of lascannons or something sounds deadly.

I will make an unbound army, but it will be purely using units I already own. The only reason it will be unbound is because it allows me to make a more fluffy Deathwatch army (an alternative to my FOC based one).

Will this unbound deathwatch army be super effective? Nope - it'll just be fun.

Will I be playing against like-minded people who use Unbound rules for fluff - Yes, because I don't play with randomers or fool myself into thinking competitive 40K is in any way a game based on 40K.

Will I be playing at a GW store? - No, not a chance.

I only really see Unbound lists being an issue when you're A) Playing random people you don't know B) In a tournament environment where it's now legal to be even more obnoxious

*Shrugs* I'll be sticking to playing with people who aren't there to get a hard-on over beating people they don't know with OP lists

You know... those guys who only show up to 'play a game and beat people - because I'm not here to make friends' rather than attempting to be human and talk to their opponent. The same guys who don't turn up to the FLGS socials in the pub and only rock up to be a *insert expletive* on the table top.

Y'know, it just goes to show how bad a codex is when you can't think of a good list, even without the FoC.

Except heldrakes. Because fk heldrakes.
