Glorious Lord of Chaos

The burning pits of Hades, also known as Sweden in summer

Hello, gentlepeople.

I decided to kickstart my return to the 'assembly and painting' part of the hobby with by far the most excessive purchase available in Warhammer: The Forge World Mars-Alpha Warlord Titan.

I have decided to paint the armour plates white with metallic red trims, to match my Word Bearers.

After a few weeks of waiting, it arrived last night. The duties of life leave me unable to focus on its construction and painting as much as I wish I could but I am making progress already, having assembled the inner hip-groin piece and the inner lower leg pieces.

It was not quite the nightmare I expected. Aside from a few issues (the leg plate holding pins were fairly badly miscast and I had to repair them as best I could, and as I type this my hands are COVERED in dried glue) the kit is very well designed, with holding points, supporting joints, pistons and what have you to distribute its monstrous weight.

To illustrate the sheer scale of the monstrosity, as the first picture really does not convey it, here is the inner hip-groin piece next to my friend's stompy Deff Dread:

Next up, the feet!

Should be fun, I look forward to doing one of these so it'll be nice to get a preview of the endeavor.

I have decided to name the Titan Oberon Inferna.

For its Princeps, Maylin Obrosius, the default Princeps model proved inadequate - and so I will most likely glue the head shut - and in his place I have acquired Irina Vega from Raging Heroes, a model more well suited (for display purposes, and for missions where the Titan crew is relevant).

Do you have magnetizing plans or pinning or both?

I suspect pinning will simply be necessary in some parts.

I currently have no plans to magnetize although that is subject to change... That power claw is seriously sexy.

Aww don't glue the head shut! I'm sure you can work out how to do a conversion on the princeps, and that interior is so cool.
Plus, the head is a £65 kit in itself, a lot of thought went into those things.

More Jazzhands Titans need to be a thing!
I hope that the power claw is the same style joint attachment as the other weapons. They fethed us over on that score with the Reaver.

I'll try to find a way, you are correct in that I would rather not glue the head shut if I do not have to.

You could always just leave the interior unpainted and unglued, then come back to it someday if you find a good solution. And who knows, maybe the cost of a Warlord will make commissioning someone to sculpt a seated princeps figure for you look like a rounding error in your bank statement!

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Update: Core structure of the legs completed.

(Sorry for the somewhat fuzzy pics, I could barely hold my phone straight with hands tired after so much pinning. )

Included a GW Marine for scale.

Next up is possibly the most important part: the hip joint. This will make or break the model. Even with pinning taken into account, a staggering amount of weight will rest on this joint. The 11 pistons per side will certainly help by adding contact points.

Also, never buy GW's superglue. Seriously. A friend who just wanted to be helpful got me 15 of GW's tiny superglue tubes, which perform decently but are ludicrously overpriced.

I was thinking that the hip pistons would help keep it together. How wrong I was.

Those things are evidence that Satan is real, and the instructions manual being a lying son of a swineherd doesn't help.

Anyway, core structure of legs + hips done. Pictures tomorrow. Until then, you will just have to imagine the fire.

I've seen other people's pics of their Titans and it always seemed that the pistons were just for looks and not actually load bearing. From what you said it seems I was right. I'm still looking forward to seeing this come together!

By the way, how many points is a Warlord Titan?

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):

Probably a good idea. Being on the phone now, I notice how much they mess with the format.

Here we go.

I have finished the initial leg assembly and I am now moving on to construct the core torso structure.

A Knight Scion model who is about to get promoted to Steersman is here too.

Bonus: Size comparison of carapace top plate and one of my brother's Chimera APCs.

Update! I had today off so I got some work done.

I have not glued the torso to the legs yet but this is how it looks right now.

The torso parts did not quite fit together and I will need to do some filling but it was still better than those accursed pistons.

Another shot, with the Princeps for comparison.

Finally, here is a crew shot. There is a lot of empty space inside the torso so I imagine there is more than three crew. In this case I will go with five, including the Moderati. Thus here is, from left to right: Steersman Edwich Alderman, Princeps Maylin Obrosius and Crew Officer Phillip Perroy.

Looks like in real life that thing would be the size of a small(ish) skyscraper! I can't imagine the mechanics of how that thing would move around! Ah, the wonders of the Mechanicus!

Actually, seeing that thing reassures me that even if I had the money to shell out for a Titan right now, I shouldn't bother. I think it would be beyond my painting and modelling skills right now. Maybe after I get better at this...

More progress! I have completed the core structure of the body itself and it is ready for the fun part - painting!

I am leaving the many, many armour plates off for attachment after painting, because painting with them on would be significantly more difficult. It loses a lot of its bulk without them on, but it's pretty big as it is!

I took it to our dining table for some pictures.

It looks ungainly and back-heavy but it isn't. Much of the stuff at the back is hollow and there is a lot more mass at the front, which will only continue as I add weapons and the head, and I will probably base this monstrosity anyway.

I also built the head, which is surprisingly small - possibly smaller than even the Warhound's. I left the roof unglued and the crew has not been added; I am still trying to figure out what exactly to do with them. Maybe I'll ditch the crew entirely and add LEDs to the head. That could be cool.

Now to figure out how to get this thing to my local gaming club, where my friends have promised to help paint it.

One of the hip pistons in the first picture are still loose, ignore that! I completed that one just after taking the picture.
