Hello All!
So to give a little background to this project, I used to have an ultramarines army that I was building up to battle-company strength. Things were going great! I had collected most of the models needed! I was making progress on the painting at a pretty brisk pace! 8th Edition was about to drop with its awesome looking true-scale space marines! All that changed when the fire nation attacked. I mean when Army painter changed it's ultramarine blue formula. All the sudden, I could no longer complete my project. I was out of the paint I used and I COULD NOT FIND A SUITABLE REPLACEMENT! Some were too purple, others were too dark. Some looked great on infantry but looked different on vehicles. I succumbed to what could only be called the BLUE RAGE!
I sold them all...
Not a rational decision, I admit, but the die was cast. Years passed. History became legend, legend became myth, and for three and half years, the remaining space marines I owned lay forgotten and unpainted on my shelf. Lately I've been feeling the bug to start painting power armor again. This time, I wanted to do something a little different. I really enjoyed painting the word bearers side of the Betrayal at Calth box, but still very much wanted to paint loyalist space marines.
I've also always kind of wanted to find one of those chapters from the fluff that is mentioned but never given any kind of background and really bring them to life. So after a little digging through the Warhammer wikis I settled on the Brothers Penitent chapter. Nothing was known about the chapter except its name and the fact that they were one of 20 chapters formed to guard the Cadian Gate.
Thus I give you my take on the Brothers Penitent

So the sharp-eyed among you will notice that the chapter symbol is merely an inverted ultramarines "U" or as others might put it: a non-inverted omega. I searched for some time, but could not find any other chapter that used this exact symbol, so I consider it fair game. Some might call me lazy for using this. Those people would be correct. But Hey, I like the uniformity that decals offer, and if anyone asks, its a stylized depiction of the Cadian Gate that these guys are supposed to/were supposed to be defending.

So what do my fellow Dakkanauts think? C &C Welcome!
Cheers!

So, I'm envisioning this project as having two parts: the "modern" 40k army comprised mostly if not all of primaris marines, and a standard battle company of "old" marines. I think both ranges look fine on their own, but I think they look silly when you mix them. I have a fair amount of models collected for both, and I will probably bounce back and forth between the projects to keep things from getting stale for me.

First up I completed a test reiver: I wasn't super excited about how these guys looked when they first came out, but I'm fairly happy with the result of the paint scheme.

I've been working on finalizing the lore of my chapter and will probably post here in the next couple of days.
C &C welcome as usual.
Cheers!

I wanted to lay out a road map of my project for the future. So far, for the Primaris company, I have assembled
A Dark Imperium Box (minus one intercessor squad that sacrificed themselves as test minis)
A 10-Man Intercessor Squad
A 5 Man Reiver Squad
An Easy-Build Redemptor Dreadnought

I still have the rest of the Reiver squad to complete, along with a Repulsor.

I have to say I'm most excited to get stuck in to painting the Intercessor Squad. Seeing a fully assembled squad of space marines brings back nostalgic memories of how ecstatic I was to dig into my very firs Space Marinet kit -- the assault on black reach starter. Good Times...

I've started painting the five-man intercessor squad from the Dark Imperium box and hope to have it finished with pics up soon.
Cheers!

Just a quick update to show the progress I've made painting my first intercessor squad: These have all their basecoating and recess washes done, and are just waiting for a highlight.

Realized I also need to fix up a few mold lines. Didn't see them in person really. Ugh. Modern cameras are a blessing and a curse...

I'm also wondering what color would be a good one for the purity seals. A lot of them will be up against red armor, so won't stand out if I keep them the standard red.
Any feedback on this would be appreciated.
Cheers!

Nice progress brother!

Tis always the way that things you think you've modelled properly always have glaring mold lines when you photograph them.

Re the purity seals - https://www.tigercolor.com/color-lab/color-theory/color-harmonies.htm

I'd maybe try for the "complimentary" so a green colour opposite the red so they stand out or you could do the "split complimentary" and pick up the red from the base, orange from the highlights and then the skyish blue for the purity seal wax potentially?

@Eeps: Thanks for the feedback! I think I will indeed go with a green purity seal. I tried it on one of the intercessors and I think it looks good. Also, I acknowledge the honor you bestowed upon me in your blog and will respond in kind when I have a finished squad of my own to show. Would you prefer your namesake to be one of the Primaris marines or do you prefer to belong to the old guard?

Soooo.... I've gotten a bit distracted from my Primaris project already. I was digging through my sprue box looking for bling for my intercessors and I discovered around 40 marines worth of MK IV and MK III armor from the obnoxious number of Calth and Prospero boxes I had bought when they first came out. I've always wanted to own a fully-painted Space Marine Battle company and I REALLY enjoyed painting the heresy era marines (well the MK IV armor at least, -- all those sharp edge lines and flat panels. It's a dream for someone who likes the look of edge highlighting but finds it tedious.)
Anyway. I've decided to make that dream a reality. I own a lot of the models already and I find it takes less time to paint the smaller marines given that there is simply less area to paint. I think my battle company will comprise mostly of mark IV marines, at least for the devastators and tacticals. I'm not entirely certain if I will try to convert the assault squads to somehow have heresy era armor or just leave them in their 40k mode. At any rate, I spent my Sunday painting up the start of my first combat squad of them:

I've also begun work on the fluff for the chapter, starting with their markings:
The Brothers Penitent use Codex-Standard tactical markings on the right pauldron, while their chapter insignia -- a white omega on a black field -- covers the left.

The Company Number is displayed in High-Gothic numeral form on one of the kneepads, usually the left. Sergeants are usually denoted by either a transverse crest on the helm or alternatively, a black kneepad, with the company number displayed in white. Squad markings are sometimes displayed over the tactical symbol, although the chapter is not strict in applying these.

So what do you all think? Would anyone be interested in reading more fluff about the chapter, such as their history or chapter culture?
Comments welcome!

Cheers!

Just a quick update. While coming up with my fluff I realized I wanted the mechanicus to be heavily involved with my chapter, which presented a problem, as I own no techmarine models and refuse to buy finecast. So a rummage around the bitz box yielded this conversion.

It was actually pretty fun to make. What do you all think?

Cheers!

Just a quick update today. Not a lot to show, but having something to post motivates me so....

First combat squad is almost done. Just needs based and transfers applied. I ditched my lightbox setup as I wasn't satisfied with how the pictures were coming out. Weirdly my iphone seems to get a more natural capture.

C & C welcome as always. Cheers!

Another quick update today. I wanted to test out how my paint scheme would play out on a vehicle, so I spent my socially-distant fourth of July knocking out this predator tank. I used spare Leman Russ sponsons instead of the ones that came with the kit, as the SM ones break super easily. Anyhow, I think I'm happy with the result.

As always, C & C welcome!

These guys are looking great! The WB's scheme is a strong one that works well on power armour.

I like the tech marine kitbash, where's his backpack from?

@Cypher226 Thanks! The techmarine's backpack was mostly a raid on a devastator sprue. It's the the lascannon power pack with two arms cut off from the tactical sprue's missile launcher backpacks. The Dev kit also comes with a servo skull which is where I stole the wiring. Lastly, I glued on spare combi-bolter bits to make the fusion cutter/flamethrowers.

Some good looking work. I was always a fan of the HH Word Bearers color schemes. Never of fan of the Legion itself though.
Smart use of the "U" too. As long as there is a GW you will NEVER run out of Ultramarine transfers.

Holy hell - Crazy progress - You're getting some work done. Really love the pred - The sponsons look sick!

I'd love to be a Primaris - Unlike in real life, where Im feeling increasingly like an oldmarine, definitely time for some youthful vigor!

Looking good! do have one question though. In the picture of your HH tactical squad against the white background, there's a head on a base. what's that for?

@kavika0311 Thanks! GW used to be pretty good about giving you a smattering of various chapters transfers, but recently they only do chapters other than the ultramarines in small, limited releases. So finding a way to use said decals was a must. In my defense, some of the raven guard successor chapters literally just use the chapter emblem on a different colored field, so I figure it's not too far-fetched.

@Eeps Primaris it is! Although I think I'm going to be going hard on this oldmarine project for a bit, so It might take bit. I'll try to get an intercessor squad knocked out soon so your avatar can join my force.

@JulietTango: I prime the heads of the ML troopers separately since it can be hard to paint the facial detail with the Missile Launcher's scope in the way. When both the helmet and the interior of the ML are finished, I use super glue to attach the head. I find it's just easier that way.

So, didn't get much painting done this week. I focused instead on assembling and priming as much of my battle company as possible. I have a full-strength demi company at least assembled and most of it primed. As for the rest, I have a devestator squad, a five man assault squad, and two tactical squads lying in the pile of shame. Just need to buy one more tactical and one more five man assault squad and that's the company. After that, I'd like to get some of the dog-face terminators before they go out of style...

Hope to have the first tactical squad fully finished by the next time I post.

Cheers!

You've done a great job on this so far. I agree with your splitting new and old up as well. I'm doing the same thing with my Space Wolves Battalion. The "old guard" company and the "new guard" company are distinct (with the new guard having a different paint scheme.)

Thanks for the kind words all! It really does help motivate me to see this through. I've actually attempted to assemble and paint a company before with Ultramarines, but I didn't see it through and now I regret it. I really want to succeed this time, if for no other reason then to finish what I start. Actually the name I chose has to do with my earlier failed attempt. There were a couple canonical chapters who are so obscure as to basically be homebrew fodder, but I wanted something with Penitent in the name. My headcanon for the chapter is that it formed around a core of disgraced Ultramarines who partially redeemed themselves for their (vague and undetermined) sin but as punishment were never again permitted to don the blue or display the proud U of ultramar. Hence why they use the inverted symbol. To remind them of where they came from and to drive their perpetual thirst to regain their honor.

@Eeps. To answer your question, I am mostly a collector, but I do play from time to time. JulietTango is actually my main IRL nemesis for 40k.

@416_SpaceWolves: Yeah, the old marines look fine if they're by themselves, and the Primaris look great, but side by side the old marines look silly. Hence the separation. I thought about trying to do a primaris battle company, but I feel like a 100 man company is pretty ill-defined with these new 3-6 man squads mucking things up. Seriously guys. Stick to multiples of 5...

I promised the next update would include a finished tactical squad and... I lied. I'm still on an assembly binge. Trying to to get everything together so I can put all my sprues and bitz boxes away. On the plus side, I can do cool things like make a squad entirely kitted out in corvus armor. On the negative, I have so many bitz from literally a decade of collecting space marines that if the show Hoarders showed up at my house to take me into protective custody my response would be: "That's fair."

Finished half a devastator squad (minus the ablative-wounds marines) and the fellas above. Getting close!

I love that the tac kit lets you build a full Mk. VI suit. Was very nice when modernizing my company so that I had more then just ML/F bare bones sarges on RTB01 squads.

Going to give them helmet stripes?

@ Nevelon: I hadn't thought about that. I may have to try it and see how it looks. Maybe a black stripe like old school blood angels?

@amazingturtles: Welcome to the blog! I'm bouncing some ideas around for fluff in my head. I think I am going to double down on incorporating the shame of not completing my former ultramarines army into the background. Also, the complicated feelings of having the primarch of the chapter that disowned them now being their new lord commander.

So progress report: I still need a few more parts to finish the tac squad of beakies. I've purchased everything I need, so it should be here in a week or so. In the meantime, I picked up a copy of the Space Marine adventures boardgame to finish another tactical squad comprised of those game pieces and the space marines from the Space Marine heroes blind boxes. I was pretty fortunate to only get two duplicates for the blind boxes, one of which was the captain.

I think I'm going to try to get everything assembled before I slap more paint down, but I'm almost there. 7 of 10 main squads are assembled, and I have all the characters I need except the chaplain. I kind of want the plastic foot-slogging one, but am having a little difficulty finding him.

Till Next Time,
Cheers!

A great army you’re developing here Brushcommando. It’s great that you’re getting lots of different Marks of armour spread amongst the Company, it gives them loads of character. I’m jealous of the MkVI squad and you having the full set of Space Marine Heroes and Adventurers. The Leman Russ sponsons on the Predator work almost seamlessly too, great addition

@Gobert: Thanks! And yes, I was insanely fortunate to get the whole series of Space Marine Heroes without too much overlap. Blind packs do make me realize I should never take up gambling though. I was willing to sink WAY too much money into them...

Today was a pretty productive one hobby-wise. I managed to prime everything that I've assembled so far. Didn't take any photos as watching a sea of grey plastic become a sea of black plastic isn't that visually interesting. Though I did knock these guys out last night:

Couldn't find the plastic chaplain at a price I was willing to pay, so I just made one myself. I think he looks the part. I think that as GW moves forward with primaris, the one thing I will miss most about the old marines is just how moddable they are. I know you can convert the primaris as well, but I'll never be good enough with an exacto knife to have the kind of flexibility that's letting me flesh out this army. Sigh... ah well. I suppose 40k had to change sometime.

I'm still waiting for some packages to arrive so that I can finish my assault squads and my beakie marines. Also have a couple of dreadnoughts and rhinos on the way to flesh out the company motor pool.

Till next time.

Pretty seamless kitbash. I couldn't quite tell at first what parts were modded save the helmet. I think the crozius is the most innovative. Is the apothecary kitbashed as well, aside from the head?

Thanks for the kind words, all! Still on an assembly kick. Realized I had an extra Space Marine Heroes sergeant because the one that comes in the boardgame is the same sculpt. Decided to bling him out to serve as one of the Lieutenants. In case you can't tell, I'm quite fond of the transverse crests...

Edit: Initially missed your question JulietTango, the apthecary isn't much of a conversion. He's just on MK IV legs and the head is from space marine heroes. There's an old jes goodwin sculpt I was trying to imitate a little bit.

Transverse crest! So that's what they're called. Not chicken hats. It's good to know, really.

The chaplain looks really good, and you're right, there's just so much you can do with the classic marines, modding wise.
