Hello.

Starting a youtube channel that will have tactica, rumours, new release reviews etc.

Wanted to get a feel for what type of videos people go on youtube to locate.

I'd really appreciate your feedback. We are looking at doing 2/3 videos a week at present until we have a better understanding of what people want.

Mostly things like Emperor's Text to Speech, Astartes and other in-game fiction.

Occasionally, I'll look up a paint tutorial or a review of upcoming/newly released models or rulebooks.

With painting tutorials, Do you like quick tips or lengthy advanced videos?

I think that each item you list is popular for its own audience. The key is not so much to find what is popular and copy it, but rather to work and develop and find what you can produce to a high level of quality which will help secure you an active audience.

If you try and do everything or you try and follow trends you might find yourself facing a losing battle against channels already doing those things. Furthermore it means you might focus on something, like painting, which might not be a strength of yours. Instead go with what YOU like and what you can do and what you have a passion for. Let that come through in the quality and depth of your work and go from there.




As an aside at least one of you needs a better microphone. If you're going to narrate over still photos then you want good audio so that its not distracting.
Also treat performances like acting; you have a script, you practice, you read, you re-record, you break it down into segments etc... Basically practice so that your delivery is as clean, clear and professional as you can make it. That will make it easier to listen too and that will improve peoples impression and attention to what you are saying.

Just like for video you want steady clearly captured shots that are well lit and focused at suitable distances and angles to show what you need.

Personally, I don't actually watch much 40k stuff on YouTube. What I do watch is usually humor related stuff/spoofs/parodies/etc, or old game cutscenes, or well done lore stuff, sometimes painting related things.

For whatever reason I honestly have no interest in most direct gaming content, if you're not playing yourself then just watching someone else play with toys that aren't yours is hard to get excited over, production values on most aren't that great, and I find I really don't like listening to the personalities or voices of most people doing reviews or tactics or preview or battle report stuff.

As mentioned by Overread, different people watch different 40k content. It is best to stick to what YOU like doing, whether that be painting, lore videos, tactics, battle reports or w/e. People tend to appreciate content creators with a genuine passion for what they do, and on top of that it also makes it easier for you to to stick to what you are trying to do even if it might take a while for the channel to take off.
Having said that I personally enjoy tactica/deep dives of factions I play or might consider picking up and the occasional lore videos. Mostly to keep up as I don't read many BL books anymore and GW has a tendency to dump quite a bit of lore in those over the last few years. Battle Reports too but only from channels that explain what it is their lists are trying to do and with a focus on at least semi-competitive/serious play.

My personal opinion is to suggest not to mix the two.

If you're doing a Podcast do a Podcast. If you're doing video do video. Trying to mix the two can end up being iffy because often as not you end up with your audience being torn. Those who want to listen to a podcast aren't looking for images; those who want to view video or at least images aren't really looking for a podcast with scrolling images.

We got a new video coming out on Sunday. Then the following week we have added webcams. As we didnt like the feel to it without our faces. Maybe podcast was the wrong term to use. And we want to focus more visually.

We will defo be doing deep dives on factions and tactica. Starting with Tyranids and all of the hive fleets and working our way through to other army factions

The very occasional Battle Report/game.

I watch the occasional batreps, and I do like to listen to other peoples views on units and stuff.

40 mins is much more digestible than the 1 1/2 hour+ slogs.

Could you add a section for Painting. I feel like that's a massive one missing.

Auspex tactics, PlayonTableTop and Tabletop Tactics are some of my favourites.

As someone who has lived in Australia for a significant part of my life, I want to like Majorkill, but I do find his OTT swearing and use of other provocative language a little tiresome. In my experience at least, aussie aren't like that.

I also like StrikingScorpion82, and a fair few painting channels like Squidmar.

I'll add my 2 cents here. I think there is an opportunity to do two for one. By that, I mean shoot a video of an entire painting process. You can edit that footage into two videos, a short Warhammer-style video, where they tell you the step, show about 15 seconds of it, then cut to how it looks once done. Then you can compile another, longer edit, where the steps are named, you talk through them etc. Just an idea. A short version, and the full step-by-step with explanation as you do it version. I think that would be really groovy.

Lore videos more than anything else. Though I did start following a tactics channel.

I don't watch a lot of 40k Youtube, but what I would watch would be escalation campaign battles in an ongoing narrative. I'd only be interested in campaigns where the central protagonists were NOT marines; GW media already does marine media better than any fanboy with a handcam, so if I want marines, I'll just look at all the anything GW has ever produced.

I think Crusade will give everyone a ready made escalation campaign to upload if they want; I'm planning on documenting a campaign via youtube, which will essentially be a record of the Crusades of each faction.

I watch a fair bit of Youtube content, with Tabletop Tactics being my go to channel. Although I like variety in content, the ultimate decider is the personality of the people presenting the show. I have to like the people. After that, quality is next, but I understand it can be a while for that to develop.

Enjoyed your first two videos Carl, will look out for more. One thing I'd put as a priority going forward is a decent desk mic to even out the sound - no need to break the bank, less than a hundred quid will get you a real hike in quality and has good uses outside of making youtube videos. Your visual presentation is very good so bringing up your audio quality just a bit will set you apart from other channels.

I regulary watch Tabletop Tactics, Kirioth, Wolf Lord Rho, 40k Theories, and listen to the Splintermind podcast.

40K is a niche hobby, and there are quite a number of established conent producers, so I would suggest that you find a particular speciality if possible. For example, Splintermind focus only on Aeldari (and primarily Drukhari), WLR mainly does Black Library excerpts and discussions.

9th edition is by far the biggest thing happening in 40K, so that really needs to be your focus; nobody is likely to care about a new channel's 8th edition tactical insights. Necrons are probably going to see a big upsurge in popularity, so you should really be pushing out content for them rather than starting with one of the most boring factions in the game (apologies Nid players).

Hopefully with 9e out soon we see a boom in hobby numbers, If the tv show isn't a complete distaster then youtube channels will see a new rush too. I know Guy from Midwinter Minis says his "how to play 40k for a beginner" is seeing a lot of increased traffic in lockdown, so all of those things mean channels that are catering to those new to the hobby are going to thrive.

I consume tonnes of battle reports almost exclusively from Tabletop Tactics, Winters SEO, Grim Resolve and lately, a little bit of Sorcerer Dave. Just to clarify, I don't find watching people roll dice particularly entertaining, but I've discovered that at the right volume, the sound of people talking and playing is incredibly soothing when I'm trying to fall asleep.

For lore, I mostly go to 1D4chan.

For hobby news, I rarely go anywhere other than the Warhammer communtiy these days.

And when I'm bored at work, I like to dive right into that salty pile of vitriol and enmity we all know and love as Dakka.

Did not expect thins. I only watch, or rather listen, to w40k audiobooks on youtube. Russian and Polish guys upload them every now and then after youtube deletes them.

Skaredcast and Vanguard gaming are two I listen to for tactics and things like that, I find them generally interesting and informative. Skari has been more focused on Drukhari which I play but he has branched out a lot more in recent times.

Broadsword gaming has been another youtuber that has come on my radar in the last few months as well, he hasn't a huge ammount of battle report content at the moment due to all of the Covid stuff going on but his hobby and painting videos I have found very good to watch, and his production and filming skills are very high which is always very nice.

So yea for me a good presenter/presenters and production value is what Ipersonally find key when looking for 40k content to watch, and having a good variety of different video topics really helps as well.

Almost nothing.

I will watch painting tutorials, and I'll watch the terrain/army list section of Winter SEO videos, but not the bat rep itself as I don't like video bat reps.

Priority Orders Discarded is the only video bat rep site I watch as it's the only format I can stand (pictures, captions, voice over - nothing filmed live).

I might watch the odd review video someone does on a new book (Winters, sometimes Norn Queen Alexis), but otherwise I don't engage with much 40K content via YouTube at all.

Weird given the time I spend here...

Would a stop motion tactics video be something that people watch? just a idea of a birds eye view cam and stop motion clips of maneuvers to aid both begineers in how to play and advanced players with advanced tactics.

Look at how war gamer girls channel does batreps for warmachine. the camera tracking/angles, explanation of each move/action, the music for each faction, and the after action strategy discussion. it is all very polished and presented well making it an enjoyable watch.

Miniwargaming batreps are what I'm usually watching. Lately they didn't have many narrative campaign due to Corona, but these were their most interesting videos. And going from Matt these were also what made them successful.
Narrative campaigns show the best aspects of 40K and are often something many players can't easily do at home. Nobody wants to see a fight between two boring netlists, especially Marines against Marines. It's also important to find the right length. Tabletop Tactics does nice narrative campaigns, too, but their Videos are too damn long! 2:30 hours?! Wow, I can watch the new Avengers in that time...
I don't see the appeal in background videos, I didn't watch many but the ones I did were people reading the lexicanum article or the codex entry. Yeah, I know these, already,.don't waste my time. If you do something like that it had to contain infos not easily available, like content from Black Library.novels.
