With the first two Combat Patrol boxes rolling out this weekend, I thought it'd be fun to see what people would make for their own Combat Patrol boxes.

FIRST
Pick a faction

THEN
Pick 24-25 Power Level worth of *stuff* which can total no more than $200 retail (at full GW prices, natch) … remember that there's the new Power Level update from a month or two back and that, otherwise, you can snag stuff from the GW webstore, so conversion sprues, characters, units, etc.

REMEMBER
It has to be a legal Combat Patrol force, so at least one HQ, at least 1 Troops, then no more than 2 of anything else. (Heavy, Elite, etc.)

I'm curious what kinds of things y'all think would work well!

For Tau I would make:

1x Commander in Enforcer: 7 PL and 55$
1x Crisis Suits squad: 9 PL and 75$
1x Tau Piranha: 4 pl and 36$
1x Strike Team: 4 PL and 50 $

So 24 PL and 220$ aprox

Necrons.

I would put 3 lokhust in it.

The original destroyer (gun platform) has always been a key unit is necron armies, and GW never put them in any of the boxed sets. (Rotten lousy ) They sure put in wraiths, tho. Joke's on them tho, I converted some wraiths into destroyers.

Add in a royal warden, a plasmancer, 2 murder buckets, 10 warriors and couple other bits. But the big deal would be to finally make GW put a really great unit in a discount box. Hence the Lokhust.

Blood Angels for me! I'd like it to be jump-pack focused, but don't see that happening in the dawning of the new Age of Primaris. So, a more realistic take:

- Primaris Chaplain
- 5x Assault Intercessors
- 5x Intercessors
- Upgrade sprue to optionally make one of the Intercessor units Death Company
- 5x Blood Angel Terminators

What's $200 in proper currency - well, allowing for GW conversion rates - these days?

Cadian Command Squad - $36 - Gives Command Squad & Company Commander (2PL + 2PL, 1 HQ, 1 Elite)
Cadian Shock Troops - $36 - (3PL, 1 Troops)
Hellhound - $49.50 - (7PL, 1 FA)
Leman Russ (normal or Demolisher) - $59 - (11PL, 1 HS)

I make no claim that this is a sensible starting Combat Patrol, but it fits the given criteria.

In proper money, these selections work out to £111.

We do end up with $19.50 left to use at this point, though we're already at 25PL. If you wanted to use up the funds, chuck in one of:
- Commissar with Power Fist ($15)
- Primaris Psyker ($15)
- Techpriest Enginseer 2 ($15)
- Regimental Advisors ($18)
- Lord Commissar ($18)
- Crusaders ($18)
- Wyrdvane Psykers ($15)
- Cadian with Plasma Gun and Meltagun ($15) - I'd lean towards this one as it doesn't affect the PL at all, and gives a couple more options to the Comamnd Squad and Infantry Squad

Why? Because you can buy this over and over again, even if you already have a bunch of orks at home it remains valuable and it would provide new players with a functional starting army, like AOBR did back in its day.

Death Guard
Considering how the daemon prince is the only HQ available now, there aren't many options...

1 Daemon Prince
1 Plague Surgeon
7 Plague Marines
1 Myphitic Blighthauler

Hilariously, it would end up with just as many models as the custodes box.

But guess what adds up perfectly to 25 PL? The DG half of dark imperium.
So I won't be surprised if that is what we will get, at the same price as both sides of DI used to cost.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.

Am I missing something? Cos I just totted it up and got PL35.

DG are in a bit of a weird place when it comes to the DI stuff. Because unless they put in EVERYTHING, there's no way to get the Plaguecaster or Blightbringer in there (although I suppose they could treat the plasma gun as a swappable option, in which case you could ditch one Poxwalker sprue). Be interesting to see what happens with this – unless the DI stuff becomes available via *some* other means, that leaves them with three characters (including their 2 unique HQs) unavailable, and Poxwalkers in the same gakky position as Cultists.

LoC - 6
Plaguecaster - 5
Noxious Blightbringer - 3
7 Plague Marines - 8
20 Pox walkers - 6
Drone - 7

I know this is a tad off topic but with the combat patrol boxes are they going to be making one for every faction/space marine chapter? I like the models and the price but the raised details on the shoulder pads never really appealed to me.

Part of me kind of thinks GW could make more money if they just did basic marines with no custom shoulder pads and forced those who wanted said shoulder pads to buy them sepeartly

The upgrade spruces are optional to build the guys with. You could pick up the Deathwatch combat patrol box, and not put on the Deathwatch shoulderpads and use them for whichever chapter you want.

They do already sell the shoulder pads separately for all the chapters.

Which does make it far less appealing deal though. you are paying for upgrade sprues you don't use.

Some marines are not going to be getting a patrol box, just like some didn't have start collecting boxs.

New plastic Imperial guard regiment boxes;

-troop- infantry squad (pl3)
-elite- command squad (pl2)
-elite- commissar (pl2)
-heavy- heavy weapons squad (pl3)

That comes roughly 170€ with GW price, and it could work as a starting point for all codex regiment.. (valhallan mordian etc)

Agreed, but it is an option, and still probably cheaper than buying everything individually. I do wonder what these will cost Vs the existing getting started boxes.

I came here to say this, but was beaten to the punch.

I would have thought at least adding a single deathwatch model or weapon would have been a minimum requirement for a deathwatch-specific box set, but no. Plain old space marines. I actually put some thought into it, and it's actually pretty difficult to make a -worse- deathwatch combat patrol box than what they're doing.

I predicted a while ago that GW were going to effectively squad deathwatch as an option (not actually remove it entirely, but just remove all the unique features so it ends up as vanilla space marines but with a couple of gimmicks). I was shouted down because "they are getting a supplement" but... yeh. So far, so terrible.

Remind me again what are the actual Deathwatch units?

Corvus Blackstar, Artemis, Watch Master, Kill Team Cassius and the Veterans kit...so that's effectively two named characters(Artemis and Cassius), another character, a flyer, and a 5 man model box.

You never were anything but 'vanilla space marines with a couple of gimmicks'. And the previous Deathwatch box wasn't really a big seller it seemed. Mostly because, y'know...named character.

While Yvraine would be cool( count me in! ), she is a named character and would discourage some players from purchasing the Triumvirate kit, which is currently the only Ynnari kit to purchase. A Farseer or Shadowseer - being generic HQ characters - would be a good substitute at the same power level.

Otherwise, fantastic choices!
