Subject: Dakka Painting Challenge Round 74 April 2021: Travelling in Style
Welcome all to the 74th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favourite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds, ending in February next year.
This month, the theme is Travelling in Style: Why walk from A to B, when you can fly/teleport/drive a ing massive tank? Your entry should consist of models with methods of movement other than their own two feet, anything from cavalry to vehicles, jetpacks to teleporters.
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of April and will end at midnight UK time on the 30th of April. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

Awesome... good to have a bit of a kick to paint and try out new armies and models wouldn't have painted otherwise.
Saw the writing on the wall of the Subject Poll, so have already ordered a model for this month, so hopefully post a Proof pic in next couple days. Good luck everyone...

Going to be a stretch this month, as normally I just pick something out of the primed pile. Almost done with the build. Going with a Flying Hive Tyrant. If that isn’t going to happen, might do a last minute sub of a wave serpent of some bikes.
Edit:
Built. Lower gun arms are magnetized, but too much torque to stop the droop. Might add a little poster tack after paint.
I can tell already this gal is going to be a real treat to photograph.

I'm going to jump in with what will be the test models for my Nighthaunt army that I've been sitting on for over a year. Figured because they have no legs they are an appropriate entry for this month's theme. I am tempted to go down the AoS28/grimdark route with them but also considering a brighter scheme so I can use colours I've never tried before.
I'm so in for this. I didn't get to submit my Spitfire in Feb, and I missed March :(
I've got plans for a 1/48 desert diorama - a P-40C Tomahawk and a Mk. IV Matilda circa Operation Crusader (December 1941). I have to crave an indulgence though - the cockpit is already painted because it needs to be done before assembly of anything else. It won't be seen/photographed for the final diorama though (It's more just for my own satisfaction). If that meets with disapproval, then I'll omit the plane from the final display
Nice, thanks Para! It's the sole annoyance of airplane kits and I'd planned the diorama before knowing the outcome of the poll (Which fitted just nicely!)
Outriders are done being modeled and will wait for a whole for the magic sculpt to dry before I begin. Doing two big commissions this month on top of these so wish me luck

I may paint a random Reaper fig for this instead of shoehorning something from my paint schedule. The merchant with giant terrapin mount springs to mind...
"Holy Sh*&, you've opened my eyes and changed my mind about this topic, thanks Dakka OT!"
I guess I will have to build the last three Shining Spears, as I do not think I have any other vehicles or flyers left.
This will be the last time I do Shining Spears...I promise.
Now these were scrapped together from no less that four eBay purchases as some plastic lances from Archon Productions. the two un primed jetbikes are built from the parts of three others, they were in such poor condition.
Cheers,
CB

I believe the correct answer is 'yes'! Though I head the Tumbler can be an absolute bastard to put together, assuming it's the Knight Models one.
It is! I think I will do the tumbler. I put the batpod together tonight, but I want to make a small scenic base for it with both batman and Catwoman on it so I can use either in game. Plus I love tom Hardy's bane so I need to paint him first.

I have two choices. First, this 15mm Mech from the-maker-formerly-known-as-Paulson-Games:
Second is this Goblin King on Mawbeast from Mantic:
They are both cool models (in my opinion, anyway), and I want to build them both pretty much equally. I'll watch my progress and select one or the other before the end of the month.
Painting total as of 3429/2024: 56 plus a Deva King statue
Painting total as of 12/31/2024: 107 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain and two walkers and a quad mech and five giants

Didn't finish last month, but I think this month I'll be a little more excited. I'll enter my recently-acquired starship models from Star Fleet Battles:
The plan is to paint as many of them as I can, then enter the best five. I won't be able to exactly batch paint them either, as they are pretty much all from different races and will look very different. This will be a serious test of my freehanding skills as several of the ship sculpts are not terribly detailed. Also, it'll be my first time painting spaceships, especially at this small scale, so I'll have to see if I can find some good techniques as some of the things I've learned painting 40k/LOTR figures may not apply.
My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2024: 40 | Total models painted in 2025: 21 | Current main painting project: Warhammer 40k Leviathan set

The Grotsnik Corp Bump Feelerer 9,000. It only looks like several bricks crudely gaffer taped to a cricket bat.

Damn. Blast from the past. So many years playing SFB, I can still ID all the different races’ ship. It’s OK, I didn’t need those brain cells for practical stuff anyway.

Quick WIP: Built the Matilda last night (It literally fell together ) and I've given the track area it's pre-shading and main colour before the tracks and side skirts are installed (weathering and lining to come afterwards). After this, I should be able to blitz the rest in short order
