OK...I'm being cheap...But is possible to have a reasonable Tyranid Army without a Tyrant?

HQ

3 Tyranid Warriors:  RC, ST, +1 I, +1 WS, Extended Carapace, Leaping  - 120

3 Tyranid Warriors:  RC, ST, +1 I, +1 WS, Extended Carapace, Leaping  - 120

Troops

12 Genestealers:  Extended Carapace, Scuttlers, Flesh Hooks - 288

12 Genestealers:  Extended Carapace, Scuttlers, Flesh Hooks - 288

10 Genestealers:  Extended Carapace, Scuttlers, Flesh Hooks - 240

10 Genestealers:  Extended Carapace, Scuttlers, Flesh Hooks - 240

10 Genestealers:  Extended Carapace, Scuttlers, Flesh Hooks - 240

6 Genestealers:  Extended Carapace -120

Heavy Support

1 Carnifex:  B. Strangler, V. Cannon, +1 BS, +1 W, +1 WS, Spine Banks -172

1 Carnifex:  B. Strangler, V. Cannon, +1 BS, +1 W, +1 WS, Spine Banks -172

Will this work, or will I need to buy that Tyrant?  Note this is a fun list (Not for a GT or comparable)

Sure, its just that the tyrant has the best value for pts ratio in the entire tyranid army, which is why people tend to always have 2 in all competetive lists.

That said I did make a similar list work, though I had 3 units of warriors, I ran them with tl devs and one had a BS/lashwhip.

If your against meqs you can just take the BS out first, against Geqs the weapon is awsome though so I left it to last.

There will be units you do not want to assualt as they are in cover or are too far away so engaging them would take you too far from mission objectives or other such reasons, I really liked the shooty warriors for these roles.

The Plasma Gun is a game altering force of unspeakable power

I'd drop some warriors for some raveners man. They're just so much better for the points. The threat of 19-24" assault will make people have a harder time judging where they can shoot you from (e.g. if they get their Crisis suits 18-20" away from you, they may very well get screwed, whereas with your only fast being warriors of a guarenteed 18" charge, they have a lot more ability to pick and choose where/when they shoot).

Also you can get the drop on jump pack squads and 18" infiltrators by hitting them with raveners.

They're a fantastic pushback unit plain and simple. I killed a baal predtor with one that was foolish enough to get within 20" of my line, earlier tonight.

Then I'd nip/tuck stealers to get a third gunfex.

The Hammer

Looks good. 'Stealer heavy is actually rated among the strongest Tyranid archetypes nowadays - either they target your assault force and eat pie plates, or target your pie plates and eat you assault force.

If you want to run a third 'fex, my advice would be to first look for points in redundant upgrads - WS on the Warriors and 'fexes, plus the spine banks and maybe a few flesh hooks - before cutting bodies. If you're maxing 'stealers, you should concentrate on doing just that!

When soldiers think, it's called routing.
