lol no rush at all, I've got uni exams at the moment so my project isn't exactly imminent. Still, looking forwards to it, good luck with the parents evening =]

some more work done on the Harlequin, and I'm pretty pleased with him, although the shots are rubbish and you can't really see the highlighting - I suspect it's because it's pretty minimal and dark highlighting more than anything else though. I redid his lapels - I used Skink blue as a bas to start off with, but it was too bright and a cold blue rather than a warm blue, so I did it darker and it's working much better.
Still to do: gold buckles need highlighting, just based and washed at the moment. Then it's belt and crotch, backpack and gear - I think I'm just going to give them a highlight of dark-ish blue as I don't really want them standing out too much. That'd leave the belt gem and weapons left to do. I should (hopefully!) be able to get that all done today : )

Harlequin (first of many with any luck!) done, although I can see where I need to do a bit of tidying up on his sword.
Onto the next ranger before back to the Autarch I think.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Red Ranger almost done, and he's looking pretty slick and bad-@$$ lol I'm surprised at how well it works, so maybe the rest of the squad can be a mix of the green and red suits...

finished red ranger and progress on the Autarch. I was fairly happy with him this morning, but from the shots, i'm going to go back and beef up the yellow on his cloak, it's too orange at the moment. I think I'll probably go back to the ranger and wash his rifle with some black as well.

Red Ranger, Green Ranger........... Just blue, yellow and pink to go and you could make the power rangers!!

I'm always amazed when I come to your thread with the quality of painting.

A quick question about your paints, do you use citadel paints or another brand or a mixture for your first layer??
I'm just starting out painting and was wondering if you used a base paint first before you do the layering after you have primed the models??
I'm just practising base paints on a few models just now till I'm confident to try layering and was wondering how you did it.

Cheers

A black wash for the ranger's rifle seems like the best thing for it. The red robes are nice (perfectly painted, as normal) but the green seems to fit the scheme of the rangers better. The autarch is awesome, simply put. More yellow in the robes would be nice, but I think it's fine as it is.

Are you going to go over the gun of the red ranger with some wash or shadowing?

Red ranger gun - definitely needs a black wash. I thought that the Green Ranger gun was too dark, but in comparison is just right, so I'll go back and do that, hopefully tonight.
lol I was thinking about the whole Power Ranger thing with the colours, but can't bring myself to do a pink ranger ; )

Coyote: I just use Citadel paints; I have go a couple of paints from other ranges, but I rarely use them. I've always been really happy with Citadel paints, even using them in various graphics projects at Uni when I hadn't touched a miniature in years : )
I generally always water them down though, although when basing, it's usually only 1:1 paint:water, just to get a nice smooth coat.

The Autarch has had more yellow on him and more highlights, so he's cool now, and I blocked in most of the Charadon Granite, although I did also manage to drop him and one of his banner poles fell off, so a bit of emergency gluing was needed there ; )

At this point, I'm tempted to say you need to do a Blue, Yellow, Black, Pink and maybe White Ranger too...

this blog is inspiring me and my eldar painting man. Keep up the good work. Very nice done. One question: have you considered brown on the edges of the bases for your newest eldar models? think it would fit perfectly.

Gravity: I used to do a brown trim on the bases, but I've switched to black recently, just because it's a bit cleaner and sharper.

what I've been up to:
A little work done on the Autarch - the Charadon Granite (more on than shortly) has been blocked in and washed with black, so he's ready to go for red highlighting.

Death Jester: I'd already started this guy a long time ago it seems now, so I stripped him to start again. I kind of enjoy stripping miniatures, it's therapeutic lol However, there's always little bits of paint that you can't quite get out, so some definition is lost, and there's a bit of that going on with him. Nothing too serious, but I can tell (and it bugs me lol). The bone areas have been washed with some Gryph's Sepia, and then the rest given an undercoat of Charadon and washed with black. I've started to highlight it all up with red - one of the new ones, Mephiston Red, which is darker than Blood red, so I'll go in with that as the next highlight after it's all done. I went with Mephiston because I wanted him to look a little different to my Craftworld guys.

Harlequin 2: no tricky iridescence on this one (yet)...

I wanted to use Kabalite as the base for his coat, then Sybarite as a main highlight and then Hellion as the final highlight. Nothing could be simpler, right? After all, they're the new GW products, and they're designed to work with each other. Piece of cake.
Wrong.
I haven't had to work as hard with some highlighting in a long time, and what highlighting I got was pasty and washed out. I've said before that the GW aesthetic is to just add white to everything and that's their highlighting, and these paints prove my point. It didn't look terrible, but it certainly didn't look up to my standard, nor did it look like my usual work. I'm still a fan of the paints, I think used well, they give you good results, but I think using them in the Step 1, Step 2, Step 3 way GW obviously want everyone to will not give great results.
So, seeing the horror that was the highlighting, I decided to stop and go back to how I'd usually do things. My mid-level highlight was Scorpion Green, and once that layer was on, it immediately looked better. Top highlight was 1:1 Scorpion Green and Sunburst Yellow.
The grey...

I love Charadon Granite, you know I do, but I realise that it doesn't exist anymore, so I'll move on. I bought one of the new greys this morning. I'm not even going to say which one because it's rubbish.
Okay, maybe it's not rubbish, but Charadon it is not. Not a very warm tone and it went on in a very patchy way. Not impressed. Looks okay, but not as dark with a wash of black.
I've promptly ordered two pots of Charadon from an online shop.
So... crappy grey base, black wash. For the Mohawk I drybrushed Liche Purple, then Necron Abyss, then Hawks Turquoise and then a bit of Scorpion Green.
i still haven't quite decided what I'm going to do on the rest of him. I'm considering a nice bright reddy-purple for one of the sashes, perhaps the face one, just for some contrast... not sure.

Beautiful as always Finnan! I actually used your warlocks for inspiration on my counts as mephiston, the dark cloth fading into red, although mine is a tad brighter than yours, I can't wait to see the death jester finished I really like that model!

here's a link to my meph if you wanted to have a look? he's down towards the bottom of the page under the rubber duck shenanigans :-)

Second Harlequin finished and a little bit of progress done on the Death Jester. Not been feeling terribly great lately, so I haven't really been in the mood for painting, but I wanted to get this one done. I feel as if I dropped the ball a bit on the green 'quin, I just didn't take the time to highlight as well as I could, and I think it shows when he's next to the blue one. But there you go, some are going to be better than others. I'd also like to blame an old curse of mine: I just can't do greens very well. Don't know why, but I've always found them quite tricky to do. Blues, yellows and reds I can do in my sleep, but greens, no. more practice needed, clearly.
I was obviously feeling in a Hunger Games mood when working on the Jester - trying to make his coat burn a little ; )

time to get back on the Golden Demon pony as well I think - doing these guys has been fun, but isn't helping me get more entries done. I undercoated my 54mm ranger today, so I'll start working on him for the over-sized category. I'm thinking more iridescent cloth...

Im digging the green harlequin and the blue, and the jester. in fact all your work on this blog. Very inspiring to starters just like me!!

How do you get all you cloth/cloaks looking so natural without any layering/highlighting lines?? Is it just lots of layers with very thin paint??

Made in gb
Screaming Shining Spear

Kent

yeah, lots and lots of thin layers does the trick - I generally thin my paint down a lot, 1:4 or 1:5 paint:water.

I did some more work on the 54 ranger tonight - I'll try and get a shot up tomorrow.

I haven't even started doing the face yet really! lol That's just a white undercoat and a couple of layers of Gryph's Sepia. I'll highlight it up to white to have it nice, stark, polished bone... that's the plan anyway! ; )

a bit of work done on the ranger last night and tonight. Same as with the blue Harlequin, the colours don't show up on the shots as well as they do in the flesh, not really sure why.
Only the back of his coat really started, and his sash basecoated and washed, ready for highlighting up to yellow; I need to do a bit of tidying up with Charadon before I start the yellow.
His coat: Charadon basecoat, and then a wash of black. Then Liche purple, Necron Abyss, Hawks turquiose and Scorpion green, all in thin layers and covering less and less in area with each colour.
