I know you normally can do it but my friends and I often play in three or four way games. It came up last week when my banshees got into combat with a squad of incubi. The combat dice were bad for both sides so it didn't end in the first round like it should have. A two strong squad of Land Speeder Tornados was in the area and decided to give the group a visit.

6 Banshees V 5 Incubi and Two Land Speeders, what happens?

And don't say you can never fire into close combat - the rules state that you can't only because your troops are wary of firing on comrads. I assure you the Son's of Corax aren't so inclined to call either of those two comrads.

Don't mix fluff with rules.

You can't shoot into combat.

You could always make a house rule, in which case, you could have the shots randomized. Combat between two sides: 1-3 hits enemy A, 4-6 hits enemy B. Combat between three sides: 1-2 hits enemy A, 3-4 hits enemy B, 5-6 hits enemy C.

Do it just like WHFB. Roll to hit, remove misses. Take these hits and then randomize them as listed above. Once hits have been resolved, roll the to-wound dice for each enemy side.

...which makes no difference, since they clearly state that you can't fire into a combat.

If you want to do it, you'll need a house rule.

House rule around here is exactly as described above - if you want to make one, that's the best way to do it.

I like the house rule, personally. It makes sense.

You can't fire into close combat without a house rule. However, you could aim a ordinance blast close to the CC and then hope it rolls into the CC. That is "legit"

Techically you can't even play a three or four player game without house rules to begin with.

Don't think I don't hate that ordinance 'Deviation' either...

Okay, that was pretty much the rules we came up with too. 'Assault cannons kill everything by the way.' [25 assault cannons at 1500 points!] I just don't see why GW doesn't include rules for something like that - then again I've been playing since 2nd edition and there's a lot of rules that I 'think' they should have made.

Okay, thanks everybody.

P.S I said don't say you can't fire into close combat because the rules explaination doesn't support multiplayer engagements. Not the statement of the rules themselves

I would say its ultimately up to you guys but common sense would be if I see two enemies duking it out I will take a few pot shots at them. I would randomize the hits though.

Comparing tournament records is another form of e-peen measuring.

Luckily for you there is currently an excellent game out there that does exactly this.

But its not 40k...
