Regardless of its history, the current White Dwarf is a glossy, non-absorbant form of toilet paper. There are knitting magazines with better wargaming articles. And I don't mean those newfangled extreme knitting for teens full-bleed glossies, either. White Dwarf is a crime against literature; had the Babylonians seen what terrors their civilization would later wreak, they would have held off inventing the letter D in hopes that the Games Workshop editors would get confused and publish an anglo-centric boating periodical instead.

While you and I have almost nothing in common, we do share the desire to see White Dwarf become (or return to, depending on your point of view) a magazine that at least pretends to have some value. But Games Workshop is a company of (increasingly) limited resources. The revitalization of White Dwarf is not at hand. Therefore, rather than continuing to devote precious staff and moon-dollars to this full-color-full-bleed monthly abortion, White Dwarf should be taken quietly out into the back garden and shot. Tell the kids that you took White Dwarf to a farm and that she's really happy there and she has lots to space to run around and no we can't visit her and whatever, but kill the damn thing. Reallocate the resources to better purposes, such as adding people to the development team or replacing the coffee machine that dispenses cockroaches.

I'd like to see a nice, new White Dwarf just as much as you, but given the state of GW these days, it's not possible even if they wanted to. There's a nice pasture over there. Let's put it out.

lets see, FAQs support is lacking and white dwarf is lacking. Both are drafted and then made public in an attempt to make the hobby better.

How about one month look at FAQs or rule support and the next month do a white dwarf. We get updated rules every 2 months so nobody complains and a magazine every 2 months. The game gets better and instead of filler articles they have an extra month to think of quality stuff to put in the magazine.

Triggerbaby, have you ever written anything that isn't pure gold?

I wrote all sorts of worthless trite crap back on Dakka 2. Seriously, BurnTheXenos could have written circles around me (haha! Just kidding! BurnTheXenos is the worst poster ever!). Fortunately, the evidence is gone now.

Before I close, I would just like to reiterate that reading anything written by BurnTheXenos is like have a tiny dog fart on your optic nerve.

Hahaha! Excellent! Death to the White Dwarf! Allu akbar Dakka Dakka! Jihad on the stunted infidel!" Fantastic word-smithing as usual Triggerbaby. Perhaps next month we'll hear of our once beloved monthly's undignified demise at the hands of the corporate management who seem hell bent on running GW into the ground while laughing all the way to the bank.

I honestly don't think white dwarf is that bad I mean it is bad but not bad enough to make me want to stop getting it or anything. I also want GW around for more time because they have the best miniatures around and I don't think I would want to collect anyother ones because no other companies are to my tastes as far as miniatures go. Excuse me while list reasons why other companies arent to my taste
1.Historic Miniatures-History.....BORING let me get my creative juices flowing I dont want cowboy miniatures, I need a whole army of space marine that are covered in purity seals screaming chants about the emperor
2.Privateer Press-Not in to steam punk stuff
3.Void-too sleek and boring looking
4.Rackham- This company makes great minis but it isn't to my tastes
5.Urban War-Same reasons why I dont like void
6. Mongoose- The minis are just ugly except for some mechs and stuff
7.Dark Age- HOW MANY MORE COMPANIES CAN I LIST!!! unhhgggg

In conclusion I think GW has some great miniatures and doesnt deserve to be brought down by pesimistic customers and I dont care how f'd up the coporate people are just as long as I am not left with crappy minis

It is so sad when cousins marry.  At least the offspring can find work as a GW fanboy.

1. Trigger, you clearly have learned all the lessons of hate as espoused in Metalocalypse. In fact, I'm pretty sure that show is based on your writings. Sue them for copyright infringement. And punitive damages.

2. White Dwarf will never, ever be like what we think it was (and let's face it, even in the 200s, it had sketchy, sketchy moments.

I'd love to see WD be replaced with a quarterly, a la No Quarter. Fill it with all the things we want and love: Batreps, art, fiction, well-painted miniatures and articles on how to convert/paint them, army highlights, new/experimental rules, FAQs, the woiks. But put it out 4 times a year instead, make it a serious book (say, about the size of a Chapter Approved or WH General's Compendium), and make it QUALITY. No typos, no rules mistakes or vague wording, no contradictory interpretations, no batreps played with illegal armies (unless for special scenarios), no tactical advice based on bad ideas. I'd pay $60 a year for 4 serious compendiums instead of 12 pieces of drek (full disclosure: I had a yearly subscription for 3 years and gave it up back in '00 or '01 because of the suck; haven't bought a new WD in about 6 months at least).

Wouldn't that be better?

@Mortis: As far as I can tell, you like GW miniatures because you like them, and you don't like other miniatures because they are not to your taste. This is fine. However, by offering only your highly subjective opinion as an argument, you are perforce admitting that every other, equally subjective opinion is an equally valid argument. In my opinion, a lot of the miniatures made by GW have been dreck; not only dreck, but expensive dreck. So there.

All that is rather removed from the topic of this post. May I suggest you look at the other thread, Dakka petition to save White Dwarf? Perhaps you could offer some constructive ideas there. Here on this thread we would like to vent our spleen (or at least appreciate the masterful sarcasm of Triggerbaby) in peace.

As for being pessimistic customers, well, yes.  Most of us have been around for years of the hobby, we fondly remember the days when all miniatures were cast in lead, you got 8 orcs for $5, and the early editions of WarHammer were the best rules available... and we have been witness to a decline in the quality and support that Games Workshop is providing, even as the prices they charge us have consistently increased.  If we are pessimistic, it is for good reason.  And if we didn't care passionately, we wouldn't be so upset.

Oh, and I might take you more seriously if you would bother to use proper grammar & spelling.

Triggerbaby is spot on with his blistering criticism of the current Caucasian Midget.    I often wonder if he writes comedy professionally, if he does not then why?

So far as Mr. you guys are to negative,  GW is all sunshine and marshmallow unicorns danceing to ABBA.  Please remember this is the forum that made Fat Bloke cry.

Most GW miniatures are jokes. They are so ridiculously cartoony. They need more models like the LOTR models, those are quality, anatomically correct, beautiful miniatures. Right now the only useful part of WD is the "coming soon/new releases section" in the beginning, but those are on the website.

WRYYYYYYYYY!!!

To be fair, the miniatures are not as cartoony as some of the earlier editions- the 5th ed. Wood Elves & Dark Elves, with hands larger than their faces! Tho they had to be, in order to hold those massive fat spearshafts. And let us never mention the death clown that was Nagash.
Once there was an article in WD addressing that very problem. Apparently, in order to look 'right' at 28mm scale, the hands & feet need to be somewhat exaggerated. Which turns out to be what we in the reality-based world call a lie, intended to cover the deficiencies of their sculpting staff, since GW is now producing a line of absolutely beautiful true 25mm figures in LoTR. The Variags almost make me want to collect them, they would make great Huns.
I will agree that the LoTR minis are well-sculpted and in proportion. Pity about the rules system.

I sincerly hope that GW doesnt rely on people like you to promote thier games. You are either a GW plant or a rabid Otaku bent on making us believe we have no right in criticizing a company many of us have invested considerable time, money and interest in.

You have marked yourself as a "Special Games Workshop Olympian" with your first agonizingly crude post here. Congrats. May you be flamed for many posts to come.

I agree. There is no sense in saving it, but there will always be fan boys who are even more enamoured with the current advertising propoganda WD has become.

Without even the slightest hint of containing anything even resembling corporeal substance, WD will never be a periodical for people who actually like to make up their own minds regarding the "what, how whys" of playing GW games.

There has been a ban placed on printing ad hoc rules, rules updates, interesting articles concerning anything that might make GW games more enjoyable to a freer thinking public.

So instead of just killing it, I suggest doing what many before us have done.
Quit buying the rag.
Let GW immerse their funds into digging a deeper hole for themselves. They only way to get a better quality product is voting with dollars afterall.

GW has stopped taking feedback regarding their publications, due to not wanting to hear the truth. They cannot take crticism constructivly, because being publically traded, theyre in deep fear that investors might take a larger interest in their investment and listen to the feedback given.

So now they ignore the masses and tell us what we want to hear. Instructing us on how to appreciate the new standard of LOW WD has fallen to. Its for our own good afterall.

The young apprentice entered the gaming store. His chuck taylors, worn thin from jumping up and down and pointing at lesser opponents, dragged on the equally worn carpet. He clutched to his case of miniatures like a mother carrying a newborn.

He was confronted by a sight of unspeakable horror. Adults playing Flames of War and Street Violence, Warmachine and Confrontation. There in the corner, a well-dressed person in his 30s was teaching a teenager how to play Warlord. And they were LAUGHING, and having fun. Behind them, collecting dust, were the last of the GW figures. Miniatures for Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000, lovingly crafted from plastic and pewter, crying in pain behind their cellophane prison.

He could not take their torment any longer. The apprentice pushed passed the two clearly disturbed individuals, and grabbed a swath of blisters and boxes. Lord of the Rings, Necron Pariahs, Ork Stormboyz, Vespids, it didn't matter. They needed the love and release only he could bring. He'd show them, he thought to himself. He'd show them all! They too would come to know the joy, the beauty of GW and GW alone.

That night he could here the figures chittering to him in his sleep. Mad things they spoke to him in his slumber. Mad, viscious things...

A bunch of random ranting and screeching

Did you actually read the original post? Or any of the others that followed? Quite obviously not. Had you read any of the posts in this thread (or the other), you'd see that most people have stopped buying GW's overpriced crap for some time now. Seems instead you saw "Death to the White Dwarf" and were blinded by nerd rage as you flipped your lid and then spent the next 45 minutes gnashing your teeth and battering away at your poor keyboard to spewing two posts filled with very the same screeching you supposedly decry. If this stuff bothers you so much, why waste nearly an hours time pitching a fit about it?

ps. Great post Syr! That was fantastic! So Lovecraftian... "Beware yonder consumer! Games Workshop is actually a front company for alien overfiends, hell bent on corrupting the minds of our children through their insiduous pewter and plastic mind control devices! "
