They used to do it, stupid fliers can do it, bearded grey puppies can do it, but apparently nobody in the 41st millenium remembers what side sponsons were designed for. Seriously though. One extra target a turn. Thats all it would take to make me happy. No more fiddling with my predator to ensure he dosen't manage to block his own LOS to a target. They take it away to simplify things, then they go and play favorites. WTH? What the heck indeed.

Perhaps require a Ld test on the "baseline" Ld of the army? i.e., 8 for SMs, 7 for IG, etc.
|
As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

I like it! Good idea. (But I have to admit, it takes away the coolness of the machine spirit, and why only 2 targets?)

You're right. Given the odds of it making print, I might as well ask for three. On the machine spirit, didn't they rob it of that ability in the new space marine dex?

Why not allow separate targetting for each weapon? Vehicles are assumed to have all manner of complex range and targetting equipment.
However, I also see no reason why a squad must direct all of it's fire on one target either. Apparently the sarge doesn't know how to tell the men to keep those bugs pinned while Pvt. Schmuck tries to take out that monster flying up the field. AT least allow a LD test to split fire....

It's that kind of stuff (along with Overwatch) that made 2nd ed. so complex and the games so long. Splitting the fire of tanks is sufficient, and simple enough.

Back in the second ed days, each model could fire at a different target. And whats more, each individual model was considered a seperate target. So at the begining of the shooting phase, you would go down the line saying "my bolter guy shoots your heavy bolter guy, my next bolter guy shoots the same heavy bolter guy, my next bolter guy shoots this bolter guy, my next bolter guy shoots this other bolter guy, my plasma gun shoots your squad sargent, ect. For your entire army. Then once you declaired everything, you had to go back and roll it out. It really sucked and was super slow. It did let you split fire though. So as with most things GW, they swung the pendlum the other way and made it so that nothing could split fire anymore. While I'm mostly glad squads can't do it, I wouldn't mind seeing tanks being able to split their fire.

Keep the normal tergettign rules, but allow up to half of a squad to fire at a single other target.

I agree. Long fangs have the right idea.
I'd also love to see units able to reposition a model or two to take advantage of cover and such without botching the fire line of Mr. shmuck, the lascannon bearer, but I've been reading alot of warmachine.
