The Final Faction aliens are insanely affordable, and well sculpted for their price. I’ve taken the bighuge guns off of the bug creatures and given them some of the slightly less ridonculous guns from the accessory sets, and they look good.

For anyone looking for more terrain options, Dollar Tree also now sells a couple sizes of octagonal gift boxes with lids, the kind that Maelstrom’s Edge bits were born for. Feels like there might be some interest in large octagonal buildings or platforms.

I also found some stuff in the summer section, such as these pineapple cups with the scale texture that makes them look like alien drop pods. There were also these planters that can look like primitive huts with some cutting.

The Driven vehicles at Target have real potential. The cab is big enough to fit a driver in but they are compressed in length so they won't take up too much room on the table Here's mine with a 1/48 vehicle on the back.

I'd have bought more, but I'm swimming in 1/43 and 1/48 vehicles. The flatbed with container is a neat one.

Several of the vehicles in this series are also available in remote control!

Looks like the same castle with different accessories and almost the same price. At ~12" a side you could make a pretty impressive fortress with 2 sets ~$70.

I'm kind of impressed they included the instructions, this really does make it clear what you get. It looks like you can make the walls into a line, but the towers only have doors on 2 walls and assume you're making a square, but honestly that's easy to fix with a knife and glue.

Note the kids Envying the one with the castle. These folks know good marketing.

I like this totally candid non-photoshopped image of the castle.

Find someone who looks at you, they way these kids are looking at the castle.

EDIT-Just now noticed they built their castle backwards with the doorways on the outside, for easy access, and the arrow slits on the inside. Well that at least shows it would work as a long wall.

I was able to get to my local Dollar Tree and pick up some Fairy Gates, a couple water pools and some houses for my wife's gnomes..

I also grabbed 2 of the half houses in an attempt to make a full house.

The Dollar Tree had, as far as I can tell, the complete line of Final Faction toys, per that poster, and if anyone needs a "loot run" I am willing to go try to fulfill wants, and ship to you.

So, this has no gaming use I can see, and is pretty much nothing you’d ever want, but it just feels like news: someone made a Jet Jaguar toy. Clearly this Christmas’ hottest gift.

I get plenty of Dollar tree stuff sound here, but for those who don't, I can vouch for Porkuslime as an honest trader.

Just picked up this DinoTrux toy today. Great detail. But it's huge

My first thought was to replace the head with a drill to make a heavy mining vehicle.

However it would make a cool Ork vehicle, even though I don't play orks. Is there a Gargant or some such that is about 8 inches wide and 10 inches tall?

Dinotrux, must be new, I've not seen them before.

Looks like besides your big one, there's a nice set of smaller ones for $30

https://www.amazon.com/Construction-Transforming-Dinosaur-Electric-Educational/dp/B093TPBJN4?th=1

Apparently they're take apart so maybe worth it just for the bits.

Looks like most are 10" long, versus Rhinos that are about 6"

Interesting set. DinoTrux is a fairly kids program on Netflix. My kids liked it years ago, but I had no idea it was popular enough to support a toy line and a knock off Toy line. Definitely some interesting bits in the Amazon set but not quite enough detail to seek out.

The toy I got is the Ty Rex and it comes nicely greebled

Interestingly there is an official set closer in scale and price to the knock-off set.

Well, inspired by some of the pics you guys posted, I ordered the huge Flying Fox, the Buzz lightyear Armadillo and the Zerg ship..

My dreams of a space port table are that much closer!

All of it together cost me less than a Stormraven.

Now, I'm new to converting toys for Sci Fi use. Anybody have any suggestions on where to find cheap bits that look vaguely like engines to add to the Flying Fox?

I'd also plan to add a playable interior to Flying Fox by adding a floor and catwalks along the side of the main interior compartment, so any suggestions for good flooring material (diamond print plastic and?) or good catwalks and railings would be welcome.

Railway modeling firms evergreen and plastruct do various types of textured sheet (styrene)

eg https://www.hattons.co.uk/46143/plastruct_ps_150_91682_g_double_diamond_plate/stockdetail

Greenstuff world does similar but it's ABS

https://www.greenstuffworld.com/en/textured-sheets/129-abs-plasticard-diamond-textured-sheet-double-thread-a4.html

but i may well end up going with cheaper untextured foamboard with maybe a few lines scribed on to represent large deck plates

still wondering about engines (i may go with adding a single one to the back but how i'll make it i've no idea yet)

How much do you want to spend? Besides the Final Faction bits from the last couple of pages, you could get a Snap Ship to cannibalize. Or, if you’re willing to spend a bit more there are some nice Gundam Build parts, from simple thruster bells (verniers?) you can glue on the back, to full engine accessories.

Like this.

I think it's worth it to buy the diamond plate if you can find a good price.

Snap ships do have great bits, but they are small. I think the Dollar Tree Final faction parts are a better buy and much better suited for 28mm.

If you can acquire some deadzone sprues, they are great for greebling.

Also, "For Sale" signs at the hardware store are usually polystyrene, are cheaper than buying model styrene and are thin enough to be flexible over uneven angles and such.

I think I used sale signs, Hard plastic coffee stirrers and Deadzone pannels for the Paw Patrol conversion.

If you know anyone who works in a pathology lab, specimen cassettes are my secret weapon for sci-fi greebling.

Got a bunch when my wife's lab switched colors.

According to
Amazon, they are ABS plastics. Does that mean plastic glue works in them?

Unfortunately, Amazon’s best deal is 200 for ~$30.

Thank you for the tips Eilif, I've admired your conversions for years. What would you say is a good price for the diamond plate plastruct? I should aim for 1/48 scale diamond plate?

I've literally never bought plasticard.

No normal plastic glue won't work on ABS (basically Lego plastic) although i think there are a few types that can (plastruct has one i think) but they generally aren't on sale in the UK

As for Most ABS plastics, MEK based glues will work well, but for the specimen cases I've generally had to use super glue. They take paint well though. It's not a soft paint-resistant plastic. It's quite hard.

If anyone needs some specimen cases send me a PM with an offer and we'll work something out. I'm happy to sell in quantities less than Amazon, though 200 for $30 is a pretty good deal.
5 of them arranged into a cube also makes a pretty great rooftop AC unit...

I'm going to throw this out there since there are probably interested folks here. I'm going to be purging my terrain-supply collection soon. If anyone is interested in possibly buying a big box of castoff toy parts and such (for a very low price) send me a PM and when the time comes I'll be in touch. I've got way to much to build in a lifetime and would like to get it off to folks who could use it. Shipping rates being what they are, this might be a better deal for someone in the Chicago or NOrthern Indiana area who could pickup in person, but shipping is possible.

Not a toys, but one of my favorite repurposed item - terrain pieces in my collection...

https://www.amazon.com/Collapsible-XTAUTO-Lightweight-Waterproof-Rechargeable/dp/B0915B6X66/?th=1

I got a bunch of these emergency led lanterns for relatively cheap for my Necromunda board. They take paint well and as long as you leave the small patch unpainted where the solar panel is located on top you never have to worry about running down the batteries... assuming you want lights on your table. The led light bulb telescopes into the housing which gives you options if you want different heights and it has a switch so it doesn't have to be turned on if you don't want it to be. The wire handles are springy and relatively easy to remove, just by squeezing and pulling them out.

I recommend you lightly sand the clear section around the light bulb and spray paint it white. It helps diffuse and dim the light better for atmosphere. If you want your light to have color, you can then use inks or generally translucent paints over the white. Painting this whole thing is even easier if you extend the lantern open spray paint the whole thing white, than collapse it to paint the rest of the color you want on it. The only masking at that point is that solar panel on top.

But even if you don't like the idea of lights on your table, I think these end up looking good side by side with GW's sector mechanicus silos once painted.

Yeah, there are various different versions of those lamps in a couple of different sizes, and they're brilliant for terrain. The pack I got didn't have the light in the bottom, and were battery powered rather than solar - the bottom unscrews for the batteries to go in, so I just left that unglued and pop the batteries in before a game.
