New FW Avatar, plus Death Korp Mortars, Autocannons and Heavy Stubbers. The Avatar, whilst nice, is a bit on the 'safe' side. They haven't deviated too much from the original design... he's just taller. Pity.

Yep, sure is pretty. Too bad that's probably the only one of 'em that didn't come out chipped, broken, warped or otherwise malformed. Too much money for too little value, I say.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

WoW, I am going to get that model.

It looks like it is just an Avatar replacement (not a ridiculously expensive (money and pts.) Greater Deamon).

It is cool as hell and will lead a few of my budding Eldar Force into battle.

Well... it is huge and really, really fierce-looking. But honestly, I'm just not loving it - and good god, how many days would it take to clean all the crud and flash and mold release away from all those cracks and crevices to make the thing paintable?

Maybe I'd like it more if it wasn't such a departure from the old avatar, which I've always thought to be one of the best GW models - I guess lots of people do, because it's been the same model FOREVER. How many greater daemons molds went into the old mold bin in Glen Burnie while that Avatar just kept rocking out? And now he's been remade as a big screaming monster with a bubble-butt. I hate to wax nostalgic like this, but some of those great old GW models are just classics.

Up your nose with a rubber hose.

Beautiful, but the pose is a little odd. From the waist up he's all "I am the God of Hellfire" (cue Arthur Brown), but from the waist down there's something a little too... I don't know... Broadway? about the way he's mincing along. Granted he's an Eldar god of War, but I doubt Khaine would be down with his Avatars looking so light in the loafers on the battlefield.

It is a lovely sculpt though and it's got me even more fired up to see GW's new Avatar.

Buttons Should Be Brass, Not Gold!

Soviet Kanukistan

I think it is too large for "The Avatar" from a fluff-wise perspective - mostly having to do with:

1. He's a statue when he's not fighting.
2. Avatars are all the same size, since they GROW out of the craftworld's wraithbone core from a fragment of Khaine.
3. The Forgeworld model is bigger than a tank, which means the poor sod won't fit into most of the webway conduits.

They should have made him "regular bloodthirster size" instead of EFFIN HUGE.

Also, a few other niggling things that bother me:

1. The Wailing Doom is too small - proportionally compared to the metal Avatar
2. The Wraithbone bitz are too small - proportionally compared to the metal Avatar

That said, the craggy bits are awesome looking, and the pose is fairly dynamic.

Don't like it at all... He just don't seem to be ready to war. He more look like he just go for a little walk.

Here's an idea: maybe FW should release a little Avatar dog for him to walk around with...

I can't wait to see a painted one. I could see doing it in a similar paint style to the new balrog, with fire coming out of all of those cracks, and in my mind's eye it looks freakin' METAL.

Is there any news on any of the other models cause ibeen out of the loop for a whie

The Imperium of Man is able to traverse the Warp with difficulty when their Emperor concentrates from his golden life support machine and lights the way. Unfortunately, because the Emperor has the attention span of the average 5-year-old Pokemon fanboy, this means that many an unfortunate Imperial ship has had the WTF WHERE'D THE LIGHTS GO experience, which in the Warp is invariably fatal.

Man, i have to be the fan boy again, but that thing is just awesome, IMHO. I agree though, that I would have posed him differently, something a little more menacing, but on the whole, that thing is kick ass.

As far as the time to clean and prep it? who cares! Just like the greater deamons, this thing is worth the effort, it is a centerpiece, the most imppresive piece in your army and if it requires a larger investment of time and energy to make it as good as possible? so be it.

but again, just my 2 cents.

Its not bad , just a bit underwhelming to me. It isn't really a huge change from the old Avatar IMHO, and I've seen no fluff evidence that all Avatars must be the same size. I love the cracked texture of the skin, it just seems a bit too casual. His mouth is all open but his body just doesn't appear to have any urgency. I wanna see my Avatar either casually tossing aside a tank like it doesn't even matter or else all tensed up like every fiber of his being is condenced wrath.

This guy kinda looks Opera mad to me. Like as he's walking forward he's singing a song about how mad he is. He's not God of Murder-angry, he's more Sharks vs. Jets-angry.

You know, it's funny... none of the FW stuff I've ever ordered has had very much flash at all. In total, I've bought giant spore mines, tyranid warrior wings (very fragile), a trygon, and a forgeworld tyrant, and I've never had warps, chips, or breaks on anything. Ever. And I have classic bad luck with this sort of stuff. I guess it's just me, but I've always had good experiences with forgeworld.

Went digging through my old posts, and guess what? I've been hating on mat ward since before it was cool

It is eldar, and everything they do is artsy!

I like the pose, but I would love a bloody heart to be in the outstretched hand.

The pose is cery characterful. It suggests grace and quickness, with a hint of menace.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.

Yeah it is a very eldar pose, and he is slender too, just like a space elf. I would have like to see a more dynamic pose, perhaps like the striking scorpions. But this is very nice, add a superb paint job and it will certainly look fantastic on the board.

Plus think about how much stuff you could hide behind him!

Flank him with two wraitlords and a farseer behind them for fortune, and you have a nice walking wall of arse kicking.

Amongst the Stars, In the Night

I've had terrible, terrible, terrible luck with FW, as every single figure, from vehicle accessories, to complete tanks, has been hideously mis-cast, covered with flash, warped, etc... Perhaps their organic kits (ie: nids and such) aren't as prone (or noticable) as the geometric shapes used for most of the other armies. You can even see casting flaws in their show peices (look at the DKK mortar's wheels), which appear cleaned up some.

I realize their kits are resin and as such, there is a certain amount of air bubbles, warpage and flash to be expected, but compared to every other commercial kit that wasn't done in a garage (and quite a few that were), Forgeworld falls way short in quality of execution all the while having a premium price tag. I love the Death Korps of Kreig weapons teams, but there is no way I'll ever spend a single penny on them knowing the lack of quality in the actual castings.

Regarding the Avatar of Khaine, I don't think there is anything I can say about it that hasn't already been. It just isn't there for me. Elements are very cool, like the texture of his skin, his face and other bits, but the whole simply doesn't "gel" for me. I can't really place it either, as it looks more accurately proportional and less cartoony than GW's normal style. :s

I think it looks good, but is it really better than the current metal avatar Jes sculpted years ago? I will say not. It's cool, but it ain't worth the cash to me.

It's funny, but I posted on the other thread before I read this one, and over there I wrote how much I liked the avatar because it's so faithful to the original. Sure the body surface is totally different, but it fits the fluff better than the original. Anyway, I like it. I really doubt I'll buy one, but I like it.

While I like the avatar, I love the Death Korps. Every picture I see of them is awesome. The heavy weapons look so good. I will not play guard. I will not play guard. I will not play guard. I just have to keep telling myself that.

Under the couch

Quite underwhelmed by the Avatar, to be Honest.

A thought struck me, though, given the general 'meh'ness of the sculpt... there was a rumour getting around a while back that the new Avatar (regular one, not Forgeworld) had been sculpted, but that the studio weren't happy with it and were sculpting a new one for the codex release.

What's the chances this Forgeworld one, coming out of the blue before the codex release, is the rejected 40K Avatar, cast up by Forgeworld rather than just tossing it out?

Edit: I'll clarify a little here... by "'meh'ness of the sculpt" I think I'm thrown more by the pose than anything. The actual sculpt, detail-wise, is mostly fine, although the face really doesn't say 'Eldar' to me... the nose and chin are too broad.

Ah ha! Very interesting... Although Forge World has been talking about doing their own for awhile now, the fact that they released this so suddenly and unexpectedly definitely lends credibility to your idea...

This is the same problem I have with the current GW Avatar - the face doesn't look "refined" enough. Get it? He's made of molten iron... Wooo I'm on a roll today. But seriously folks, the features need to be more Eldary seeing as he's a racial icon.

I can't warm up for this guy. I mean he looks like this Character should look like. with all those cracks and that dancing, but yet still powerfull pose. but he's boring. and the face is much too...what's the word...soft...

This has been rumoured previously a couple months ago on warseer and dysartes.

it basically states what you are refering to. GW was not happy with the first sculpt, but as opposed to ditching it (it is a competant sculpt afterall) they referred it to FW for their use, and GW (citadel) went back to resculpt the mainstream releease of the avatar.

Just backing your thoughts up with alot of what I heard in the past.

It is possible. I always assumed that the FW Avatar would come after the FW Greater Daemons (so we'd get a GUC this year, LOC 2007, then Avatar 2008). This sudden change in the schedual could indicate that they wanted to release the first new Avatar sculpt but GW-proper wouldn't do it, so FW took it.

I'll go against the conventional wisdom, I like it. I like powerful models with gravitas, when you're a god you shouldn't have to run around screaming, you can afford to stroll up to your targets and smite them at your leisure.

I'm also a fan of Cragmar on his throne for the same reason.

now you can move him 6" by just having him fall over.

Hmmm

looks more like a gribbly Chaos thing than Eldar. Molten metal and all, sure, but this doesn't look very cool to me.

This is what I think when I hear Eldar Avatar

Stylized face, 'smooth' plates for the body, burning, yeah.

The FW one though, has a face like one of GW's old vampire types, very wrinkly. The body has cracks running through it. It looks inconsistant to me. I think it also looks inconsistent with the rest of the Eldar army.

The stature...
yeah Eldar are suppost to be lithe and graceful and all that, but he just looks like a tall skinny guy. It's not that he's got small arms or something, just seems like a really really long torso. Also that pose.

Remember the Jes Goodwin pic of the Avenger? Hmmm, it seems all Eldar are getting their proportions changed that way. the 2nd ed art had more organic curves to their figure (like rounded shoulders/upper arms, as if the design made with circles), the 3rd/4th ed stuff seems to just be straight lines.

The sculpting is well done, but the design just doesn't say Eldar to me

It says "Chaos" or "Undead"

Actually, this would make a GREAT Undead conversion.
