Okay here is the deal. I don't even own the rule book yet. This is your chance to have a huge influence on a new player. I want to purchase a 1000 point army. I know that I want to play Dwarves. I know that my most common opponents will be a playing a Skaven hoarding army and the other a lizardman army.

Experienced players please post up exactly what you would purchase with a short out-line of strategy. Please keep in mind I know basically nothing about the game. If you have time could you email your suggestions to: kzeltinger@hotmail.com

I really appreciate it!

Here's a pretty standard 1000 point list of fun......

Dragon Slayer Grimtok Dawrdrakk-50
-Slayer Axes

Thane Runkstok Dawrdrakk-117
-Gromril Armor, Shield
-Rune Weapon
-Master Rune of Swiftness, Rune of Cleaving
-Rune Armor
 -Rune of Stone

Thane Gromgor Dawrdrakk-124
-Great Weapon, Gromril Armor
-Rune Armor
 -2 Runes of Iron, Master Rune of Gromril

19 Warriors-186
-Heavy Armor, Shield
Squad
-Standard, Musician

19 Warriors-186
-Heavy Armor, Shield
Squad
-Standard, Musician

7 Slayers-92
-Giant Slayer

10 Quarrellers-110

Organ Gun-120

You might consider having a battle standard bearer instead of one of the thanes.

Hi there Stumpy,

I am a veteran dwarf player that has been collecting since GW started their first line of mini's.  I suggest you go to Ebay to find your miniatures.  Ebay can save you hundreds of dollars and you can find some mini's that will give your army extra character over newer armies out there.

I would start with some dwarf warrior as listed in the list above, but I would also add a few long beards in.  They cost a few more points to field, but will be well worth it tactically.  I like slayers for their character, but I do not always field them.  I would add a couple of bolt throwers in if I were you.  They will cost you less than a hundred points for one special choice.  This is the only war machine you can field as a two for one special.  They are cheap and always make their points back for me.  I like crossbowmen, but I would also have a unit of thunderers if I were you.  I am not sure what your budget is like, but I would start off with 40 warriors, 20 longbeards, 10 thunderers, 10 crossbowmen, 20 hammerers, and 20 ironbreakers and 10 troll slayers.  I would then include which type war machines you like.  I like having a choice between elites.  Also you can model your thane after any dwarf you like.  It does not have to be something gw marks as a hero.

Good luck with your army.  I am sure it will bring you many hours of pleasure as mine has.

Thanes are just dwarf lord models... and longbeards are just warrior models

Swerike

I would add that if you can stand the models, Battle for Skulll Pass comes with dwarf models on the cheap.

With the galaxy as large as it is the odds of the average guardsmen seeing and fighting a marine or MEQ are relatively slim. Unfortunately the guardsmen in your (and anyone else who plays IG's) army are the REALLY, REALLY LUCKY ones that fight marines ALL the time...

You guys have been a great help. I do very much appreciate it. As soon as I get it all put together (purchased) and learn a little about the rules I will throw an army list up and see if you can help me tweak it.

Thanks again.

OKay, I have purchased the Dwarf Codex and been reading some and here is the 1000pt army I have assembled. Let me know what you think:

Thane Battle Standard Bearer, Rune Of Stone (95)

RuneSmith, Great Weapon, Rune Of Stone (79)

19 Dwarf Warriors incluiding Command (177pts)
***I am not sure of these points are correct, do you add all 19 warriors up and then pay to upgrade for the veteran, misucian, and bearer?

19 Dwarf Warriors including command and shields (193pts)

16 Thunderers including command (249pts)

1 Cannon (90)

1 Organ Gun (120)

~~~~~~~~What do you think? The idea is to hang back and shoot until the enemy is near. My 2 main opponents play Skaven and LizardMen
I was also thinking that my Battle Standard Bearer and Runesmith would deploy with the warriors that is why they only have 19...this would make the unit an even 20
10 man thunderers, maybe 12.
Warriors are kinda..meh. No real reason to take warriors when you could have guys with crossbows with one worse save for only a little more, and then do a bunch of shooting while the enemy comes to you. I'd always take quarelers with shields over warriors, if not thunderers. That's just me though, I think the three rounds of shooting you'll get should make up for the one point of saves.
If you want choppy guys, take some hammerers or possibly ironbreakers. the points cost seriously is worth it. Not much more for a drastic increase in both defense or offense (little of both really since WS5 makes you get hit on 4s by Chaos Knights and all the other WS5 crap in the game). Or trollslayers, who are softer but unbreakable. Or miners. Or anything really.
For a friendly type of dwarf army I would go:
Anvil and runelord
dragonslayer
master engineer
some quarelers/thunderers
1 cannon
1 stone thrower
1 x miners
1 x slayers
2 x gyros
That should about fit in 2000 pts and be pretty decent. The anvil can be swapped out for Thorek if you want to get mean and nasty.
