Using the Battlefleet Bakka list:

Commander.....50

Emperor Class Battleship w/ assault boats......350

Avenger Class Grand Cruiser.........220

3x Dominator Class Cruiser w/ lvl 2 defense turret........200 each

5x Cobra Destroyer 1 w/ lvl 1 defense turret.......30 each

5x Cobra Destroyer 1 w/ lvl 1 defense turret........30 each

                                                                                      total:1500

I want to form the capital ships into a tight group in the center of the table, with the cobras deploying on the edges.  The basic plan being to use torpedos to force my opponent to cluster in the center where he will be an easy target for my nova cannons and powerful short range batteries.

The remaining points(40) went to fleet defense turrets as I feel I lack ordinance defense, but they could easily go into something else.

Thoughts?

I say have two groups of Captial ships with in support range of each other. And have the Cobra's go 'All Ahead Full' to try and flank your enemies.

300 points on escorts is a waste, IMO. You don't need str 10 torp salvos to break up or herd your opponent. Maybe trim them down.

The Avenger looks nice, but it's only slightly better than a couple of the Chaos line-cruisers, or your Dominators. Add to that the usual short range of Imperial guns and its lack of a prow armament, and it becomes something that can be avoided (unless it ties itself to an objective the opponent must take). The lack of an armored prow also hurts it. A different cruiser might be better, perhaps one with a torpedo prow weapon to help with herding.

Your lack of lances is slightly worrisome. Once you're up close, the nova cannon can't help with tough targets, and enemies like Necrons, Space Marines, and other Imperials (at least from the front) will give you trouble with just guns.

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

I personally believe Escorts if used right can easily make up their point cost and then some. It all in the manner of how you use them and if you opponit thinks they are a threat. If they do then they would send a sizable for that is likely to take them down which means they are some where other then the front lines. Or if they don't see them as a threat then they can get that all important first strike. I think a important thing to remember is that they have to get through 5 shields to do anything to the Cobras.

Lances are very nice for IN.  Since so much has 5+ or a few 6 armor rating then Lances is the great equalizer of Gothic space.

Actually, they kill 1 Cobra per 2 hits. Less if they're in contact to combine salvos, since the resulting blast markers will knock down nearby ships' shields. Incoming fire hits one ship until it's dead, then moves on down the line to the next closest.
