Yes it was a good find.

Here's more fuel for the canopy debate.

Went back and did another coat, still streaky and will need a 3rd (like you said Alex), I'm worried it will be almost opaque by then..looks better though..

Clear canopy..

More thoughts?

I've also started a few minor projects (and finished them!).

Teleport homer, seeing as they do something now, thought I'd paint mine. Always useful as an objective etc too. Been destroyed in every game so far but it is free.

I decided my Sarges need to be upgunned. It's so cheap now and they can use the extra punch. Plas pistols are just great now, able to fire into combat and only killing you if you choose to risk it, also good with a Captains buff. Axes are my preferred PW even if they are a bit unlovely, I think this is my only one anyway.

Clipped off all those hands and stored them for 9th Ed. Pinned in the new ones...

Quick lick of paint and Bob's your Mother's brother..

More soon; been working on some freehand bling for the 'Raven and made inroads to Tactical No.5! Also my brushes are giving up, so that might slow me down!

xx

Nice work on the hill.

I’m always sad to see loyal brothers get bits chopped off for upgrades. But the new paint looks good, and they should be nice and killy on the battlefield.

Green looks great on the raven. Even if it gets mostly opaque I think it will still look better then clear.

Yeah the canopy does look dark. When I did my Dark Eldar (red) I realised that any time spent on the models inside was a bit of a waste. After my first I painted super brightly and high contrast inside the cockpit and it looks much better. You could probably get away with a white drybrush/overbrush and it'd look great although I'm not sure if you want to undo your work?

Thanks, I am coming round to the idea of green canopies now, there is the Talons to do as well.

That's an interesting idea about the interior. I may well try that. I will do a 3rd coat first and see what it looks like.

Excellent update.

I'll need to see the new canopy shade IRL before I pass judgement.

Re your power axe; a coruscating nimbus only gives my sunshark something to dial into (until it gets nerfed next year).

Thanks.

I wanted to do a nice bit of freehand on the 'Raven as it is important enough to warrant it.

After some deliberation I decided to do the same old company logo, the old 'sword through Nid head' chestnut. I then discovered my Warlock purple and Liche had completely dried up. I ordered the Vallejo facsimiles. I have 'sketched' out the design in very watered down black.

In the meantime, still with the painting bug, I started another Tactical, this one will be No.5 (so theoretically, it will be alive) so one more still to come after...bleh..

Ping. These are the bolter guys from that squad, the Sarge is already done so the other 4 will form the next group to be painted.

They've been inked and had most of the dry brushing done here..

I've only bought Vallejo paints for quite a while now. The paints I had from my last stint of painting (about... two years ago?) are the only ones I had when I began painting again last week. They were still fine, after a short shake. Great paints and bottle design.

Citadel paints I've not bought in many years, as I find that they never last, and tend to just dry out long before they run out.

There's a couple handy paint comparison lists around, that give you the Vallejo equivalent to most of the citadel range.

Yes I mostly use Vallejo paints now especially, as you say, they cloned the GW range before the revamp so I don't have to try and find matches. I do like them though I think they don't taste as nice.

I've not had a lot of time to do stuff recently but I have managed to squeeze this in..

First base colours..

Some shading and highlighting..skip to the end..

Finished..

Finished with some light weathering..

Side of ship. Think it looks good, it's the 3rd Company logo (for everyone bar Nev, who will know that) and has featured on the command Rhino and the Captain's shoulder pad. Also visible the battlefield role 'Heavy Support' which has now changed to 'Flyer'. Bleh.

I was going to ask for suggestions for a name when I thought of..

Probably too old a film for most of you whippersnappers to get the reference but it made me smirk..Note the FW resin Ultra thing too. Just in case it isn't clear what chapter this belongs to.

Painfully close to being finished now...just a bit of tinkering in the cockpit (oh-er) and trying to get an even finish on the canopy. I might add more weathering to the AC's and down jets.

Toodles!

Amazing freehand. Coming together nicely, soon it will bring destruction to the foes of mankind. (after the curse of fresh paint wears off where it explodes spectacularly in the first few games). I’ve been quite happy with mine on the table

I was thinking of just adding some nicer flavours. Glad you liked the Raven.

When I'm doing a big thing like this I often like to have a smaller project to do in it's slipstream, gives me something to do when waiting for large areas of wash to dry etc.

I got this guy out from storage and got him to this level before needing full attention on the 'Raven. He's a old classic METAL dread so weighs the same as the rest of my SM army. I picked him up years ago for cheaps on eBay. I've added the skull crux thing on the left, can't remember where it's from (other than my bitzbox). I added the little banner topper of a wing-ed skull too. This like to snap off.

Bamf. Managed to finish him off (oh-er) recently. Went for a more damaged, worn look than my other (Black Reach {around}) Dread. I've an OG resin Contemptor too but I'm too scared to build that.

Shooter. I got to use him in a game even. A 1.5k games vs Blud Angles. He acquitted himself well. SB and AC is 10 shots at short range, not bad (and it's one of the cheapest).

Squasher. I should have stripped him really there's some loss of detail but couldn't be arsed, I doubt I will field him all that often anyway.

Chipping etc from smashing up heretics etc #AstartesLife

Hope you like him.

I also just got another KR case when MLCS put in an order recently, gives me somewhere to put nearly all my overflow SM stuff, Yay. Only my incomplete RT era Whirlwind doesn't fit in so that's no loss. Probably need another box and a half for the IG but bleh.

More soon.

I’ve always been a fan of dreads. From a fluff POV they really encapsulate the grimdark. And 8th seems a good time to be morally wounded and interned into a walking coffin.

The old metal dreads serve a duel purpose. Not only are they fun on the table, but are a key component of the dreadsock. No better way to dispense table-side justice to TFG and WAAC players then an old chunk of 90’s lead upside the head.

You can never have too much foam. It’s like Dakka. I try to think ahead to what I’m going to buy/build/paint next when thinking about ordering more. Which should be soon for me. Too many things that don’t have their own little bespoke slot to fill.

Keep on painting the good fight!

I will brother..

*brofists*

Quick update..

I decided the company logo wasn't bling enough so I went back and added another level of highlighting (or 2) and shading.

Old version..

New and improved..

As the green canopy is so dark now I've repainted his eyes flat yellow, so they have some chance of showing though, the instrument screens are all yellow and white too.

I really need to finish this now before I throw it it a wall. I have decided it needs the heat damage on the ACs though, which means doing the Talons to match as well.

Speaking of the Talons, I've started the many layers of green on their canopies. I can't wait for these aircraft to be done. Though I find myself staring longingly at the Stormhawk interceptor. Comapred to a Lascannon Talon (about the same points), it has and nearly the same guns and an additional Skyhammer system, +1 Toughness and re-roll '1's to save. It is swapping 'Strafing Run' for 'Interceptor' but that's a swings and roundabouts thing, most of my opponents pack in the 'Fly' keyword anyway.

In the background I'm still plinking away on these dudes too, starting to get somewhere with them. Once this Tack squad is done I'm giving serious thought to doing my Raider next, it's been in a box since about 2005 and has had about 2 goes on the table in that time.

Hope you like.

They freehand just gets better.

Always good to see some basic battle brothers cross the paintbench. It’s easy to overlook them for the new shiny, but they should form the backbone of a marine army.

On the Hawk/Talon front I think they both have their place. The Hawk is much more a specialist unit. Sure, it gets +1 to hit flyers, but remember it’s taking that -1 for moving and firing heavy guns. And unlike the Talon, it can’t just hover. And risks flying off the table, which equals death IIRC.

This is all just a theoretical on my part. I’ve flown my Talon in 8th a few times with success, but my Hawk is just waiting patiently in the to-paint pile.

Thanks.

Gotta love the Tacticals. Especially as an UM player, the UM specific Strat is good too.

On the Hawk front, I think the whole extra weapon system and better defence may well outweigh the loss of Stafing Run, Flyers can be Tanks too and I face Tau a lot.

So after much messing about I'm finally calling this thing done.

Neeeooowwwmm.

Converted ACs, I remounted them here as I prefer it to the top heavy turret thing and they are in the same place as on the 'Talons. I did a bit of heat damage on them too.

What chapter was this from again? I have my made up Ultramarine Air Force logo on all the wings of my planes.

'Blue Thunder' the name of my ship can be seen here.

Other side with 'that' emblem again..

Seen better here..

It also bears the squadron marking, a starburst, on the tail as do all my other planes.

A big three.

Glad to see the back of this now, been ages in the making, I'm happy with the finish but looking at the pics I'm wondering if it needs an other edge highlight. It will not be happening however.

I've also heat damaged the ACs of the Talons and 'greened' their canopies, I will do some pics of them when I get the chance. In the background the Tacks have been progressing slowly in the background an will now get full attention. I'm toying with idea of doing my Raider next...

Stay tuned.

Nice thing about 8th getting rid of LOS being drawn from the gun barrels is that it frees up a lot of conversion options without having to worry about MFA arguments.

Glad to see the Raven take flight. Have fun strafing those xenos!

As Oestergaard said under the wings yes, here's a pic from when I covered the build:

They are also a bit visible in some of the pics, go back and check the 1st shot.

Thanks, yes 8th is a bit of a permission for conversions as technically I'm doing myself out of 8'' or so of range on those meltas. Yep can't wait to strafe those Xenos scum. This will learn you to be born into a different race!

Been able to do a bit recently. More on the Tacks..

All areas basecoated, washing and the start of detailing..

Nearing completion, needing tidy up and final blue highlight (and basing)...

The final stages always go so quick..been nice doing some basic dudes actually. I have 4 more of this squad to do and I have have begun to blue them (I BLUE myself Michael) and the Sarg is already done, being a transfer from my old Command Squad. Hope you like.

More progress on these guys..

The first batch is all done and the grunt work is complete on the next bunch too..

A bit neater this time, new brush, and the Sarge is done already. Hopefully I can crank these dudes out soon.

I have done the base work on a new project too. A special servo skull with 12 bolters to represent my missing Hurricanes on my Raven, I think it's working so well that not even painting is necessary. Note the various marks of bolters and the lowest pair form rudimentary 'legs'.

The next thing. It's been sat in a box since about 2005 ish. I won a painting competition in a GW branch and they actually gave me £18 store credit which I put towards this bad boy. I have only used it about twice and it has been languishing unloved for too long. You can literally see the dust on it.

Going to need some work. A tiny bit has started during drying times on the above Tacks. I'm enthused with it though they seem finally worth the effort in 8th (can't die to a single lucky Melta shot etc) and hope to field it once it's completed (in 6 months or so). Also in the news the first IG 'Chapter Tactics' was revealed, it's pretty amazing, Codex creep confirmed? Looking forward to the rest of the reveals. I can pick and choose whatever I feel best represents my IG as I'm not officially any of the main Regiments, I have used Pask so hopefully the Cadian one is good. The Catachan ability to reroll the 'number of shots dice' (well one) is pretty amazeballs really and would be wildly useful (the +1 Str on dudes seems great but not fitting)...will see how things develop.

Hope you like the stuff.

Go away.

So here I go with a huge dump of photos of the board in progress.
I had most of the materials knocking around and all of the paint, so after treating myself to some gak cheap brushes and a crap roller set I got to work.
Big mix of spooge was rolled and stabpainted onto everything then an evening to dry.
The majority of paint is done on the terrain for the moment but i've kinda got to take it outside for the final highlights as they should be pretty subtle and I can't get the light I want all in one place.
The board itself needs to come out too as the garage is dark and I can't see jack gak. The rough base coats are down though.
This is all going to need touching up as a whole, some extra rilling/weathering and then softscaping at some point.
Feels good for the moment and is certainly going in the right direction.
I may well take these pics elsewhere for a tutorial at some point but would be happy to answer any questions here.

Yeah, I've still got to fill it with skulls, bodies, filigree, glitter, sculpted flames and smoke and find a way to make models slide around and dice clatter etc as per your brief.
I'm free Wednesday AFAIK and am hoping to get this all finished by then, weather or botheredness to carry it upstairs to work on it permitting.
Might even get frisky with some flock before then if I'm feeling excitable or we could do that Wednesday and/or paint match the bases from the other terrain stuff what you got?
