I did manage to get a bit of paint onto some of the river tiles for LoER though... you need a river for a river crossing!

There's still a fair bit of work to do on these before they are finished, so I really need to prioritise the bridge part over these...

And the carnival folk/board over these as LoER's closing date is after the 7TV day. gah!

I will have to go look up that story as I don't know it.

In order to break up the upcoming table layout a little I wanted to create a nice wide road to go across the table

I finally managed to finish building the first 8 kabalites. Most of the time they will be a 5 man squad with shredder in a Venom, but I added some extras and the dark lance just in case. I was originally planning on these being trueborn, but I also found a pack of the dark elf corsairs in the Drawer of Shame, which might make nicer ones. We'll see what one looks like and go from there.

Using some of the bits from the Warcry Khainite Shadowstalker set I created my first archon. The main change was cleaning up the cloak a bit as it wasn't really suitable for Drukhari, at least this lot. It may work well for mandrakes though.

For the Raider I like the main silhouette without the top fins. The only remaining issue is I dislike the front ram so I'm trying to work out what to replace it with. I was originally thinking some sort of intake grill, but a nice prow would also be nice...

I should probably stop building things and actually work out colours.

Ynnari are typically a blood red according to the books featuring them so far, but I'm not all that keen on the idea of that for everything. I really like the turquoise dark eldar I've seen around the internet, but having everything as one colour begins to look very samey... it's one of the many reasons I keep starting and selling armies, so I want to try and come up with a theme that works, and introduces some colour

At the moment I'm thinking maybe light grey with lots of contrast to it, so very deep shadows, lots of highlights; but then different troop types can have markings as a different colour type. The only downside to that was that I was planning on pale skin too, which may not go so well with the grey. Looks like I need to sacrifice a model to the painting gods....

Did a bit more work on some more Drukhari today.

The first few were doing a second set of wyches, to be potentially used as the Bloodbrides. These are the female Namirti archers with wych arms and heads from the witch elf kits and some greenstuff to fill in the holes. Two of the heads have been left off until the block colours are in

I'm still unsure if the basic troops with the fur collars are the elite version or not, but I thought I'd give the lizard cloaks a go as well to see if they look more suitable for personal bodyguard. Using the original dark elf heads gives them quite a cool look, so I think these will be the elites

Did a very quick colour test on a spare figure (oddly it doesn't look anywhere near that grainy irl...).

The basing scheme will likely be the same as the Tallarns as the Ash Waste announcement for Necromunda is making me start to plan out an ash waste board; which would also be good as a Kill Team/40k layout if done properly. This does, however, introduce a dilemma about the main colour scheme as white looks ok; but doesn't really pop on the sand... and the bone coloured Reapers and Incubi that I wanted to do will just vanish into the bases...

What do you think?

I like the white, but you're right about it blending in, maybe try some bright spot colours like hair or weapons?

I like the test scheme, maybe change the base colour - ash wastes don't need to be sand coloured. Although I was about to suggest a grey colour, which would probably be worse for merging Perhaps an oxide red ash?

Or look to add the red sash colour on the legs to help break it up?

I already have my Tallarn done up with those bases (that was a spare) and I tried oxide red for my nurgle and that didn't look great.

A teal-y colour would really pop on the sand, and would work nicely with a very clean white or light grey armour (and in no way matches the way my kitchen is painted... noooooooo sir). Going by colour theory purple or light blue... and I know I used light blue on my Tallarn as the spot colour... so teal or purple it is.

Teal Hazard stripes . Totally original but would really be fantastic for crazed dark eldar. I've seen some "alien" tuft basing in garish/neon colors as well as some of the tropical fish plants that could be used as well on the basing. EpicBasing.com makes some cool basing items like corals that you could also use to spice up the basing a bit without completely changing the overall look. Just use some on the character bases to help distinguish them from the grunts.

Still considering the colours of the Drukhari while building more... In the mean time, a bit of catchup for you. Weekend before last I sent to Birmingham for a 7TV weekend, which was great fun.

I took two tables worth of terrain, which people seemed to enjoy playing on, with lots of nice comments and people enjoying moving some of the tiles around for different scenarios. They were a little smaller than all the other layouts, so I need to work on that one for next time, but still pleased!

The Swamp board came out really nicely, with the tower taking the centre. The road across came in really handy too as the first scenario was to intercept some guards carrying the box across the board.

I didn't get a chance to play on the circus board, sadly, as everyone else jumped on it first

I ended up with the largest cast... by a *very* long way, which was both a boon and a bane. In 7TV you get points to spend each turn activating models. For your Star you get 2, each Co-Star you gets you one and each extra gets you half. So with so many zombies I was rolling in points to spend on either activating things, on special abilities or adding dice to rolls.

Most people had about 7 models, so I was at least double the size. In some cases three times as big! Sadly zombies are *really* slow which I didn't take into account

The Chaos carnival fought their way through three challenging matchups to try and take control of Pandora's Box.

In the first game I went up against a fantastic He-man cast. In typical cartoon fashion, Teela and Battle Cat both succumbed to mind control and attacked their own side. Unfortunately Mekaneck had grabbed the box and legged it for their deployment zone, winning the first match.

In the second I had the problem of having a mahoooosive dragon staring me down, with a few small characters supporting it. It was about this time that some of the effects on my cast clicked and the list became a bit abusive, which I felt really bad about by the end of the match-up. One of my characters could effectively turn the zombie horde into a points battery by crowding them up, which meant I could throw a *lot* of dice at tests. Combine this with the mind control I was able to dominate that insane dragon and turn it against his owner. Normally it's just a case of spending a point to revert mind control back... which is where another skill came in. I could sacrifice any member of my cast (including dominated figures!)... I still lost as using the zombies and co-star as a battery meant that I only had 4 other figures to run across the board to try and capture the crate and I failed to quite make it in the timeframe.

Third game I just had to stop my opponent opening their box. To do so I just had to take out their sorcerer... can you see where this one is going? Yeh. Mind control, sacrifice... I still ended up losing my cast as I made the mistake of getting mentally stuck in generating points to try and make my rolls better. I would have been better just continually moving zombies forward as a horde.

Lesson learned. Next time I want to take something simpler and far less abusive.

Since then I've made a bit more progress on the river tiles for the LoER challenge. The water feels a bit sketchy without the modpodge, but once that goes in it seems to look a lot better.

It is usually pretty hard to break 7TV, but this sacrifice thing is officially *not good*, especially when you can generate so many points a turn. Worst turn my opponent was generating about 5 points for his cast. Using standard points, plus zombie battery was netting me about 25 a turn, which as the zombies couldn't then activate left me loads to roll over to the next turn so I could throw in an extra 10+ dice to make 100% sure I converted that dragon... and then sacrifice it (which then generated me another 6 points to use next turn) :/

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I forgot to say I also got one of those amazing trade deals where both parties feel like they aren't giving enough, but the other party is overwhelmed by what they are getting!

I had a couple of 4Ground buildings from the KS years ago that I just couldn't face building and wanted rid of. They had 5 complete sets of the old warhammer woods, clipped but unbuilt! That's another 15 trees for the hex layouts, so I should be able to do a dark, scary wood now

Those boards look pretty spectacular. Is there something holding those hexagons in place or are they free to shift around? (just thinking about what it would be like to play on them)

Underneath the tiles are some risers that are just tall hollow hex shapes. As I've still got some bits that are on the thick foam hexes about half of the risers are still separate, but I'm starting to glue them together into groups of 7, so there's a lot more rigidity to the layout. Also makes them far easier to store and transport! The only downer to this is that the river tiles that I'm making sit in the table instead of the risers, so I'll need to keep some separate to allow the river to not just run along one edge of the table. I keep meaning to look at ways to lock them together, but havn't got that far yet.

The last piece of the LoER terrain is slowly coming together, just a bit more paint on the bridge and flocking; then we're done with this entry and we can look forward to the next subject.

I still can't decide on a scheme for the Dark Eldar/Ynnari so that project is currently blocked in indecision. I still really like the light grey, but I still want the sandy bases... come on brain!

Aaaaand in other news this week the hobby butterfly strikes again thanks to the guy that runs Board In Brum (the place I went to for the 7TV day). The printer is currently going buzz with the sound of a Warmaster army printing as we both decided at the event that we wanted to learn to play, given some of the amazing stls that are coming out at the moment. After much deliberation I finally settled on Vampire Counts as I always wanted a big undead army, and it goes with the AoS one I've been building over lockdown... Like I needed a new scale/system to deal with.

On the plus side it means I may get to print a castle. I looked at the print time to do an AoS scale wall. One section was going to take about 8 days at high detail!! f... that for a game of toy soldiers. That'd be about a month of non stop printing and a *lot* of filament for something that would be a pain to store and only be used once in a blue moon. At least a Warmaster scale one would be a bit smaller/quicker. Most of the hexes I have would be fine for Warmaster scale games too, it would just be the houses and trees that need doing at a different scale

One work meeting later and there's a test city gate printing that is made up of some scaled down 28mm castle bits from TitanForge's Bloodfields kickstarter. In general it's scaled down to 33%, but the walls are scaled by 40% to make enough space for a Warmaster base to fit between the battlements!

Not that that helps much as the towers and steps will prevent the bases ranking up nicely side by side. I may end up reworking the main walls so they don't have the towers dotted along them as nothing fits in there anyway. Having just had a chance to look through all the files from that kickstarter... there are no corner towers! I foresee having to kitbash some from the walls, which isn't great, though I suppose it does give be the chance to try and make something more suitable... lets see how the gatehouse prints out first.
