I definitely prefer resin over metal the majority of the time.

My concerns are since their metal was higher priced than average metal miniatures, how much higher will their resin be. If their prices put them back in range of other miniatures then that could be good boon for them.

I also have a concern for quality control and detail. The image looks great, which is good and it carries over well into the resin. Their metal miniatures though aren't the greatest in terms of 'detail' when you compare them to something like Infinity miniatures, however, I believe that is mostly due to the original sculpt that KM had done. Providing they learned from that and improved it, then this will be great.

Part of their problem with detail was poor QC and running the molds way too long instead of replacing them. Seeing their one cherry picked fig with crisp clean detail is like cool, I'd expect that. What Really matters though it what the customers are getting three months later.

As far as second edition, I'm starting to get Spartan vibes with the rate they churn out books and rules revisions for their game.

The "second edition" is likely not going to change any rules. Its going to be the same game. They have been working on what will essentially be a compendium for a while now. Don't expect streamlined rules, but you should be able to finally walk into a store and play with only one book.

The resin models are a concern for me. Their QC has been Atrociuous (ha! He's on the last page!) since the beginning. And I'm talking before BMG was even a thing. So, I'm very worried about what they think will be a quality model.

Looking at the master they are showing (blue Batman), I don;t think its up to their normal sculpting. And are all the models going to be one piece now? I enjoy the hobby for two reasons: gameplay and pretty models. The game is not perfect, and single peice models will not do it for me.

I just bought the current rules, so of course this would get announced now.

They say they're working on it, and with Harry Potter due in the Autumn, I would imagine that we won't see 2nd edition until about February at the earliest.

So there's still plenty of time to make use of the book at least - If I'm right, there's still like 1/3rd of an edition of 40k left.

A guy from Knight models on the FB groups said (and I quote) "Second Edition will have lots of new surprises. New rules. New miniatures. New prices. New everything."

That's also meant to be pre-coloured plastic, not resin. So maybe expect a plastic starter at a semi reasonable price. The price for metals has been astronomical.

The 3 packs of themed characters will be £30/€30 afaik. (3 for 2 essentially). I should be getting review copies of resin/plastic in the next week or so, so I'll keep y'all posted.

With them recently raising prices on their multipacks they need to do something to stay competitive. Their distribution already had serious issues which killed it in my area. Raising their prices on models that are very limited to get anywhere wasn't the best business practice. They need to find a cheaper way to get their product more mainstream and pass that savings along. And the losing Marvel miniatures didn't help their popularity.

Official 2nd Edition announcement:

Via KM's Facebook:

The Future is… Knight!
Citizens of Gotham, pay close attention! Things may never be the same again…
Since the release of the Batman Miniature Game five years ago, we’ve seen a lot of changes here at Knight Models. The games has gone from strength-to-strength, with a hardback core rulebook, two expansions, and the successful launch of the Batmatch organized play rules, helping to grow our amazing community around the world.
Well, we have not rested on our laurels. Something new and very, very exciting is happening to our favourite game.
We are delighted to announce the imminent arrival of the
2nd Edition Batman Miniature Game rules.
This lavish rulebook will be the culmination of thousands of games, and feedback from our customers.
Fear not: it is still the game you know and love, with its street-level strategic action in Gotham’s darkened alleyways, but we’ve taken the opportunity to streamline the mechanics, making the rules more intuitive and even more fun, and we’ve
consolidated a lot of hard-to- find rules and Traits into one mighty tome. We think players new and old will love it!
But that’s not all – far from it! The launch of the new edition will be spearheaded by brand new miniatures, representing the pinnacle of our studio’s output.
The new models will be produced in high-quality, coloured resin. Knight Models was founded on a love of display-
quality models, and we think painters and modelers will agree that these new miniatures are the best we’ve ever produced.
And if you’re a veteran Knight Models hobbyist, rest assured that every model from our current range will be 100% compatible with the new rules, and we’re working to ensure that your existing expansion books – such as the Arkham Knight Campaign Book – are still completely valid when the new edition hits the shelves.
Keep your eyes on the Knight Models website and our social media channels for teasers and previews. There’s a lot to look forward to!

And the first new model shown, a new take on Big Bane

Yeah, I much prefer that to the Arkham City one, and being resin rather than metal means I'd actually consider buying it... I have nightmares about metal models that size, but resin should do nicely.

I wonder if the DCUMG releases will also switch over to resin, or whether they'll stay in metal for whatever reason?

I hope that Bane gets DCUMG rules. Such a gorgeous model.

Couple more things from their FB comments:
- Release date for this is September, so resin minis and the new rules are coming next month (so before the Potter stuff)
- Somewhat unrelated, but they mentioned in reply to someone that the Justice League Dark are in the works for DCUMG.

So the book I just bougth two weeks ago will be redundant in just over one month at the latest?

That's bollocks.

that rulebook is 5 years old. it was very much due for a second edition.

Actually the current rulebook is only just over two years old, from the first quarter of 2015. Unless you count Suicide Squad as the current rulebook, which came out 2016. I mean if this new one is second edition, then we've already been thru 1, 1.1, and 1.2 at least.

For new news, they've moved a Ton of models to direct order only. Off hand I noticed every single Law figure except the recent QRT are in there, as well as both Ivys now. Wonder if we'll get resculpts of those characters or just different versions.

Is there a complete list anywhere of what's being moved to DO? I'd guess it's probably a big chunk of the earlier sculpts that are getting on for 5 years old at this point and are probably near the front of the queue for a resculpt. I'd not be surprised to see some of the Arkham City stuff get revisited in the 'new' range.

Funny that both Ivys are gone now, I wonder what that's in aid of... Possibly an Injustice version coming soon, she's pretty different-looking to the Arkham/Comic ones?

Some surprisingly recent stuff there! Especially odd to see a whole load of models with no alternate versions like Two-face, Speedy, Black Mask, Grundy, Clayface ect...

I hope they can get around to replacing these sooner rather than later...

Wow, that's like... the whole line.

The game really needs a new edition but this feels a little worryingly rushed. Maybe not, but September doesn't feel like there will be the kind of changes I think the game really needs.

The Poison Ivy and Plant Slaves seems really weird. - I'm pretty sure I remember her being released and I haven't been in the game that long all things considered. Same with the Black Mask crew.

Huh I've been thinking about getting the suicide box set, some TTCombat terrain and a 90cmx90cm mat. All things considered it isn't the expensive to fill such a small table area.

Is there anything I should know when building a table? I want to do it right.

The SS box only includes counters for one side, so factor that in when you're getting additional terrain.

So: September brings 2nd edition.
Tl;Dr -
- Free downloadable rulebook.
- Coloured Resin miniatures.
- Lower in price.

Much like the original edition, a streamlined version of the rules will be available for free download. Also, 2nd edition doesn't negate Flash/Arrow and Arkham Campaign.

Out of the box, models are coloured by faction to add to ease of play. We know that Bats will be Blue and Grodd seems to be light Grey. Oh, and yes, the models will be cheaper than they are at present (though the 3 for 2 metal boxsets of teams such as Birds of Prey, Teen Titans etc will continue). Also, Justice League Dark is definitely in the pipeline.

So there you go!

That does all sound pretty great. Free rules will be a big help (the rulebook is nice, but pricey!) and cheaper minis can only be a good thing.

Does anyone have the Grodd set yet? Any thoughts on if KM's resin production is up to scratch?

Also, for those in the know, is the plan for all the metals to go direct only and be replaced with resins, or just the older ones?

All metals up to and including Killer Croc iirc. Not got Grodd to review yet but folk seem generally positive.

I've also read (disappointing) rumours that the Suicide Squad box is going to be fully decommissioned due to the licensing costs involved of dealing with actors likenesses.

Which is a bad sign for future content, too.

@GravenImage
Thanks for the suggestion!

@Compel
That really sucks I was hoping to get at least Jared Joker and Batfleck. I was hoping they'd make it into resin.

I wonder what the starter will be based on?

If Knight is smart they'll release a line of cardboard buildings either in the starter and/or as a stand a lone product.

UK

I'm amazed the cardboard buildings from the SS box never went on general sale. They're not as flashy as MDF but they get the job done, especially for terrain-lazy folks like me. 4-5 pf those and some scatter terrain does you a board.

I'm up for a new starter if it can match the SS box for value, but yeah, it's a shame to see that go, it's a great set of minis. I guess if licensing is an ongoing issue I better nab the BvS Trinity set ASAP... Also somewhat dashes my hopes for a DCU starter tied into Justice League.
