I've noticed little bits of GW fluff about possession continuing to affect people even after the daemon's gone.  On the Armageddon 3 site, the Relictors used it to create better-than-avergae marines, and there's a type of soldier in Mordheim called a Darksoul that used to be possessed.

What I haven't been able to find is what exactly happens.  I remember reading somewhere else that possession destroys the possessed's soul.  That smacks of new and careless fluff, but is that what's supposed to happen?  Are the former victims psychic blanks or negatives?

I think you need to be careful about mixing 40k and fantasy,

also in many cases the humans become insane due to the demons presence or they die... or mutate

Also i don't think the Relictors ever actually intentionally had their own marines possesed i don't think even they'd go that far... yet

The Imperium of Man is able to traverse the Warp with difficulty when their Emperor concentrates from his golden life support machine and lights the way. Unfortunately, because the Emperor has the attention span of the average 5-year-old Pokemon fanboy, this means that many an unfortunate Imperial ship has had the WTF WHERE'D THE LIGHTS GO experience, which in the Warp is invariably fatal.

It seems careless to state that unimaginably powerful, chaotic, ovepowering, extradimensional force invading your body would simply destroy everything that is "you"?

Are you looking for some thesis paper about demon possession, and all of it's effects? Because the explanation in place works out pretty well so far in my eyes.

You're right, it was the Exorcists.  Fromthe old Armageddon 3 site: 216.109.125.130/search/cache

"Once the subject was exposed to the essence of the daemon, the creature was allowed to remain in the host body for twelve hours before being cast out by a daemon hunter. In some cases the resultant physical and psychological damage to the Space Marines was irreparable and we were forced to terminate, but the majority of the subjects survived the procedure and required only minor reconstructive surgery and corrective psychotherapy.

After a period of recuperation, the subjects were instructed in the methods of combating the daemonic, trained in the use of the 666 verses of the Book of Exorcisms and equipped with the weapons of an Exorcist. The two companies were then put into action on a daemon infested world on the northern fringes of the Eye of Terror. With a squad of the Grey Knights held in reserve, the Exorcist Space Marines achieved a kill ratio of 97:1. Impressive under normal circumstances, but against the daemonic, I'm sure you'll agree that these figures clearly indicate that the procedure is both safe and effective. The test subjects adrenal production more than tripled and levels of the neurotransmitter Serotonin dropped drastically, resulting in heightened states of aggression and combat effectiveness."

I know WFB and 40K are different, but they used to be more unified, and I was wondering if there was ever some concensus on exactly what happens to the daemonhost after the daemon decides to go home.

Or, I guess, what are Mordheim darksouls supposed to be like?

Except for the case of the exorcists, which are extremely radical anyway, I doubt the Inquisition would ever let someone who had been possessed live. They sterilized the entire population of the planet Armageddon and relocated them to slave labor camps after the first big war there because too many people had been exposed to chaos. They'll kill you for a lot less than having your body become host to a daemon. I guess a radical inquisitor might keep a former possessed as a minion to study the effects of the possession or in case it got wonky chaos powers, but any slip up and it would get doused in promethium.

I thought it was also they don't get corrupted that easy by deamons because the possesd marine knows what feelings and promises are involved becoming a Chaos Space Marine.

I love the smell of promethium in the morning

A while back I discussed Orlanth's Law of Malleable Canon, which basically says that as soon as you put your faith in the GW background Gavin Thorpe or some 20-year-old studio intern writes a novel that totally changes it.  There was a time when anyone, citizen, guardsman, or marine, who came in contact with evidence of chaos or its' worshippers was either executed or mindwiped.

I remember some background piece (maybe the Relictors IA?) omlying that daemonic possession, while not exactly common, happens a lot more often than the sorts of physical manifestations we see on our tabletops with daemon packs actually deep-striking in from the Immaterium.  I'd imagine there are plenty of instances of possession that the Inquisition never even hears about because no one knows what it is, what it means, or who to call.

RE: Darksouls, are they fearless or physically resilient or just random and unpredictable in game terms?

A common after effect are cravings of ice cream, pickles, and death by an inquisitor.

On backwater planets it happens alot, people either think the person who is possesed is a God or the devil or just MAD.

SERIOUS LESSON here, next time you see somebody talking to themselves dont just brush it off as the person being mad, they could be talking to a demon or possessed or going to be possessed at some point.
