Looking great, how did you get the flocking drunk though? In other news, I may get to play a game tomorrow too, a team up with Mephistoned vs MLCS dity T;au. Mephi and I have 1k each to play with. I've got a list in mind and may get a few shots off but I doubt there will be a BatRep (unless it's EPIC) but there might be a little after action report.

Yes.

Needs moar skullz?

Bam, Tack squad No.5!

Struggled to light these properly today.

That guy called you a heretic.

Bolter guy and Sarge. The leader was from my old command squad and was made redundant when squad sizes were limited to 5, I'd just finished building and converting a 7 man unit. Still I got a free Sarge for these guys and as the Medic has become a hero in his own right, I can replace him too.

ML dude and a bolter guy. I've given the rocket backpack to the normal guy as the launcher dude is already encumbered, their are about 3 other guys with rockets on their backpacks, hauling ammo for the launcher.

Glad to have these guys done. I've one more Tack for the Company which I own and is built, just the small matter of painting it. I've a Sarge for them already and 1 less Marine does make a surprising difference when painting. I cut a few corners with these guys, didn't highlight the Gold and Silver for instance but they aren't likely to see much Table Time so I'm ok with that.

It also was sunny today so I got most of the raider primed..

Hopefully playing a game tonight, see you soon.

Is the entire battleground going to be covered in a carpet of skulls, like that scene in terminator 2 (or the similar scene in Man of Steel)?

If not... I think there should at least be a Skull Pit (Like a ball pit, but more grim'n'dark).

I have a bunch of stuff for making terrain with now, and will soon have a bunch of broken vehicle bits too, if there is anything that you need making?

So I did a bit more work on the table, it's all been flocked although I have to seal it before it all falls off in transit.. I'd like to add a bit more here and there especially to the rockfaces and will do some static grass/tufts.
I'd like to frame the baseboard to stop it damaging too badly and as a dice catcher and there are a few other fiddles like the 'blank' sides of the hills and undersides that could do with a coat of paint or two.
At this stage the fiddling could go on forever adding wet effects, the odd skull, staining on the rocks, mushrooms, more clump foliage, more flock variety, tufts, static grass etc etc
It's done for the moment, however, and that's all stuff that Randy can deal with little by little or as things get chipped and need touching up.
I've had some of the old scenery dropped off too and most of it is salvageable. Some needs very little work so i'm hoping to get that done to match asap, the ruins need a pretty big revamp and new basing etc so that's a little more involved.

Cheers, guys, let me know what you think and or if you feel that there is anything missing or that could be added over time.

Looking really great. I've seem it IRL now and it's looking bonzer.

We had the idea to pry some of the old squarish ruins and put then on larger bases as tiny complexes rather then 2 'L' shaped wall sections on a small rectangle.

I look forward to littering it with dead heretics and xenos.

Seeing as I'm here, I now have a black land Raider..

Lets hope it can become a blue one soon. I'm going to have my next Termie unit be the 'background project' whilst I'm painting the 'Raider. They need some more GSing before getting sprayed and I will do a few snaps soonish.

Yep I'm looking forward to having a nice little war on it.

This got painted blue and inked..

The ink dried in a very uneven pattern, not really noticed this before, I do water the ink down (Vallejo black ink) so that's probably it (coupled with the large surface area)...hopefully it won't ruin it..

First layer of drybrushing looks a bit naff..

Progress so far, I think I will give it another tickle with Regal blue (my first drybrush colour) as the brush I was using literally fell apart during painting this.

I managed to get to GW and get some Abbaddon Black (only needs 13 coats to get the job done) and the new IG Codex, Yay? After all the rage it feels a little flat and anti-climatic. I've not ingested it all so far but highlights are: Amphibious is still missing, Demo charges have vanished and some other stuff but after those blows I couldn't read any more. With those omissions I have no idea how people can call it overpowered.

I've done a bit on building my second squad of Termies too so more on that next time.

I noticed on the maulerfiend I was recently messing about with that using inks or washes on large flat areas doesn't actually work as well as you might like... Ended up being better to only wash the edges, and then dry off any errant pools of paint. Easier to do if you gloss the area first though, which doesn't help much with landraiders.

Vehicles is one of those things where I'd love to have an airbrush to do them with, but I just can't justify it really.

That's interesting about the fiends. Gloss the area? What like paint on varnish?

AIrbrushes are nice but it's a whole new discipline to know how to paint with them and it can look a bit too 'airbrushy' sometimes which I find annoying even though the finish is very nice.

Yeh, the idea was to paint on some gloss varnish, so that when you then put on wash it doesn't soak into the base paint coat. Means it's easier to wipe up any pools of wash without them staining, and just leave the wash in the recesses / edges. But the land raider has even larger flat areas than the fiend, so I'm not sure even this would help much. I'm painting a wave serpent at the moment, and the only way I'm managing to get even-looking coats is by doing lots and lots of thing layers of paint.

Hmm it might have been worth wiping it down a bit more yes but the flat areas needed to be inked too I wasn't just aiming for inking the recesses.

Anyhoo..

Whilst the LR was drying I busted out these guys for a bit of a tickle...

Black Reach (around) Termies. I've had these guys since the box's release and they've had some attention in GS and conversion. They are mostly bluetacked together ATM................mostly

Converted Cyclone, just chopped it down as it looked super massive back then. I think I've got used to it since and now it seems small..

I've used the drying times to GS these guys together in their final poses ready for a good soaking in Halford's black spray..

They will be the next thing (probably) after the LR is done...I've been doing the endless blue edge highlighting, the most boring and time consuming bit of the whole model, pics soon.

Everyone loves a terminator. I think the last one I painted was being eaten by a carnifex.

On the scenary subject from before, what kind of size is currently appropriate for a piece of area-terrain (think similar to a forest piece)? I have a bunch of foam-board now, in A3 size, but I'm not sure if I should aim for A4 or A3 as the 'area' size of the piece.

I think somewhere around the same area as A4 ish would be fine, there are no real rules. Depends on what you are aiming for too.

A bit more painting has happened...honest.

Roar. Finally completed the tedious blue lining stage of the endeavour, all downhill from here (a bit like life).

Also the silver has had the base coat applied. Inking and higlighting for it next. The other base colours will be the next job.

Astute readers will have noticed the Raider's junior partner next to it here.

This old guy. I've the bits for this to be a Rhino or Razor but find myself wanting twin las these days.

I managed to get this one in workable condition off eBay for about a tenner. They are really hard to find and subject to serious price gouging. I saw a guy on eBay just selling the circular base of the turret and the small upright gun holder for £10 or so (not even the guns, top armour or huill piece). I got an email off 'Bitz and Kits saying they had restocked them and in the process of adding the bits to my cart they already sold out. So the only way to get it cheaper is to buy the kit new and sell the Rhino (which I couldn't be arsed to do), so it was a ok deal.

It's a bit wonkier than the photos made evident but will do, it doesn't even need painting as it's blue already!

Hopefully I will get a bit more in as I have family staying for a week on the weekend.

Merry Spookmas everyone.

Sorry for the lack of everything, November is a crappy month for me so I tend to just hibernate and try to outlast it. However I do have a few more pics to share..

The new guns were finished on the Razor..

Pew pew. A bit ropy but good for an eBay rescue. I think I'd like a second one of these dudes eventually.

The Landraider is coming along, the basecoats are happening for the misc. colours.

The metals are nearly done too. More detailed pics next time.

Been able to play a few games and take the IG out for a little spin. They are obviously better but the most recent round of Conscript nerfs seemed very over the top. They are now pretty much useless; costing as much as regulars but coming in a 20-30 blob and with much worse stats, no free sarges or options for more gear. The previous 3 nerfs were fine, the 4th broke them. There were some good changes too, Astropaths were too good for 15pts, now they are a mighty 30pts! Autocannons coming down was good too. I wish Battlescribe would get it's act in gear and update the costs. I will have to pick up Chapter Approved too sooner or later the new basic missions are supposed to be quite good. I'm looking forward to the new BA book too, a friend plays them so that should be interesting. More soon. xx

Still got a way to go on the Raider, but once it's finished I plan to do the Termies. I am being tempted to build another Company Commander for the IG I tend to find myself using 2 these days and it would be fun (and quick project). I would also like a Techpriest of some sort but the nice new plastic one seems to go for £15-20 on eBay which is a lot for a single guy.

Managed a bit more, WHTW 2 and biting cold isn't conducive to doing loads of painting.

Finished the 'parchment', reds and golds..

As seen here, note awesome conversion that just looks like my fingerprint..

Started to add some tonal difference to the lights..

Forgeworld logo thing pretty much done..

Twin Heavy B's, great weapon system now.

Twin Lasers, also very nasty..

Went for a Storm Bolter on top as MM are just so expensive and this tank is mega costly already. The MM makes it uncomfortably close to the 400pt mark.

Some good progress but been finding it hard to pick up a brush. It's very close to being done now. the big time consuming stuff is all complete and it's just the decals/details and weathering to go. I'm keen on doing some fancy freehand but don't know what to do. I think I'm done with the 3rd Co. logo (still got to do it as a banner). Answers on a postcard.

In other news, I was thinking about another CCS for the IG and idly looked through the old 'Blue' catalogue and noticed this guy..

He's very similar to my existing Commander so would look like an equivalent rank, then I idly checked to see if he's on eBay where I bought him (idly).

Not sure how that happened.

LR is looking good. Love how that parchment came out, what’s your trick there?

I think they are still a decent place to stick a MM, despite the cost. PotMS still lets them fire on the move without penalty, which is a rarity these days. Expensive, but if you want some MMs in your army, one of the better places to stick one.

I think I’ve got that IG commander collecting dust on my shelf. They just don’t make guard like they used to. Should be fun to paint.

Thanks! Yes it's getting there. Still haven't managed any more on it unfortunately. The recipe the the scroll work was: Bleached Bone, Old school brown ink, then Reikland wash. I then reapplied BB base colour. Nothing too fancy.

I agree re the MM, but as the LR is already more points than I like to put in one place, any more just feels like asking for it. I play T'pau a lot and they (especially with the 1st turn) seem to be able to destroy any single target. 358 is only just over 350 but 383 is basically 400 in my head and as such; too expensive for a non super heavy. My Shadowsword with a reasonably heavy load out comes in at 482pts so only 99 more than the MM version of the LR. The LR does seem slightly too expensive and IG Super heavies s bit too cheap.

There is a certain something about those old RT era models, a lot are a bit too shonky compared to the more recent stuff but a few can get squeezed in.

This guy turned up, thanks random eBayer! Good nick, all stripped and even with original arms/crappy lasgun and Goblin Green base (for max authenticity)...

Crappy old arms...

This is going to have to come off too..RT models often have horrible little details like this chainsword.

I think this is the config I will go with, I will probably alter the sword angle though. I will replace the sarge stripes with captain's bars too.

Other possible pose. I like the BP arm but the right arm choices for IG are few and far between (unless it's holding a lasgun), the arm here is the grenade throwing arm. Power weapons are also tricky as there are basically none in plastic. The one here is the smallest SM one I can find which is still too big, and I do want him to have one.

Maybe this firing BP arm with the other arm from version 1 with the other BP replaced with a PW, so he's holding the blade behind his head? Might be a thing.

Like this guy on the left ('Old Sargeant Eldar head') but firing with the pistol. The junior officer on the right has a PW made from a scout knife, I'll have to see if I have any of them spare as it might be a thing.

I will also build him platform shoes and slightly tilt him backwards, this will offset his smallness a bit and make him look more imposing.

It's what I did with his peer, my existing Captain and he looks ok with modern models I think.

New toys! I'm looking forward to see what you do with your vintage guard officer based off Mr Eldritch here:

RE: T'Pau alpha strikes - I can't remember killing a LR on turn one but then I've not had one as a target yet in 8th. I do remember keeping one stunned for a whole game of 7th - frustrating for all parties involved.

Go on I dare you - fill it to the brim with multi-meltas using the amazing new chapter approved rules!

Do modern guard arms look out of place on the old guy? You could give him a cigar or swagger stick of something fun. It would be a shame to carve off that sweet chainsword, but you need something for the free hand to be doing.

To be honest, I haven’t the foggiest idea what you can give guard HQs these days. Don’t they mostly just stand around shouting until they get chewed apart by some giant nasty monster?

Made in gb

Bristol!

I think the modern arms can look ok but he will need his platforms to make it work. I think the chainsword is just too archaic and wonky to look right he will also have a combat weapon drawn (so he doesn't need 2).

IG HQs have had a minor buff I think, where before the Command squads could be targeted easily (and so required hiding in Chimeras) now the character targeting restrictions mean they are hard to snipe (unless actually using snipers!). They can do quite well charging in and wailing on stuff with power axes (especially against T'pau but even against SM as you're going first for once (assuming you charged). Also the minor support characters now have 4 woulds instead of one (commissars, priests etc) which makes them stick around better.
