I remember seeing once that Leman Russ was named for a British tank commander (perhaps Russ Leman or a combination of 2 people's names?).  can anyone confirm this story?

It would explain why the name was given to tank and a primarch.

Actually a russ is a turkish dessert consisting of a citrus fruit compote topped with fresh clotted cream and crushed walnuts.  This dessert was quite popular among the aristocracy of the Ottoman Empire - Sultan Ahmed II was particularly fond of the dish and at one of his lavish banquets he is said to have remarked to his grand vizier, "none of the pleasures of the harem can compare to the delight one experiences upon savoring the exquisite flavor of a good lemon russ!"

"Leman can refer to:

an archaic term for lover, Chaucer uses it ("Lemman")in the Reeves Tale, in which the miller's wife uses it to refer to one of the students, who wound up in bed with her during the night, as a term of endearment"

Lover's Dessert? Certainly sounds like a bad ass....

Unfortunately, because the Emperor has the attention span of the average 5-year-old Pokemon fanboy, this means that many an unfortunate Imperial ship has had the WTF WHERE'D THE LIGHTS GO experience, which in the Warp is invariably fatal.

I think Perturabo is named after Sylvester Stallone's character in Death Race 2000.

Possibly hmm anyone got any ideas on that one cause it probs means somthing somwhere, although thinking about it peturb means to make somthing uneasy or even paranoid and the Iron warriors are famed for being paranoid so think that might be it.. (added that to my list)

I do believe the name Perturabo has been floating around more then 6 years. This game has been going on for 20 years at least.

The Viking Rus seems more likely, but Slavic nations have an equivilant of Romulus and Remus; three guys who set up countries, one of them was called Rus.

ahh apologies read the name of the guy above you sorry :/

Also anyone got any ideas for Lorgar

or Alpharius

Alpharius led the Alpha Legion. He was the last Primarch to be found, they were running out of names so they named him after his legion (probably).

the best I could do for Lorgar is Lo-Ghar, meaning "Big Mountain" in Pushto.

Pushto?

Also remember the Primachs were named before the emperor found them on their planets of origin, or am i getting wrong end of the stick?

Pushto is a language, spoken in the Afghanistan area.

Yes the primarchs were name before the Emperor found them. mt comments regarding Alpharius were real life, about GW. The game has been around for 20 years, but all the legion fluff didn't just appear together. The primarchs all came later than the actual legions, and obviosly GW couldn't think of a name for the alpha legion primarch, so they named him after his legion.

@ fourganger88 DO you speak Pushto? As for the names the designers all sat down together in a room and took some drugs then satrted reading some homo erotic peoptry and then came up with the names after playing some spunk the biscuit games. whoever lost had to come up with a primarch name and background.

Why would I speak Pushto? I found that out in about 5 minutes from the internet.

Your version of events is...well actually, it explains a few things about the rules for a start!

I know this isnt an "exciting" or terribly interesting answer, but my guess is they were simply inspired by general Liman von Sanders who was head of the German military mission to the Ottoman Empire, and was a major component of the resistance at Gallipoli.  His mobile batteries of 150mm guns were cruicial in supressing the Allied minesweepers and preventing the armada from forcing the strait.

Then they just slightly modified the spelling and tacked an appropriate sounding surname on there and voila.  Kinda like Hasdrubael (Carthaginian general, brother of Hannibal) morphing into Asdrubael Vect.

You learn something new every day. I always thought he had a cool name, ad now I know where it's from.

The primarchs all came later than the actual legions, and obviosly GW couldn't think of a name for the alpha legion primarch, so they named him after his legion.
Well, to be realistic, GW did this with most of their legions/primarchs, as many, if not most, of the legion and primarch names are themed together (if not some way identical), not just Alpharius and the Alpha Legion. On one hand, the many thinly veiled allusions (if not outright copying) of historical names can sometimes add some depth, overall I think it's mostly creative laziness on GW's part.

Regarding Perterabo, to perturb is to disturb or disquiet greatly in the mind; agitate or (2) to throw into great disorder, derange, while the pseudo-latinizing suffix "-abo" could simply mean someone that perturbs or is perturbed (which, given the fluff, Perturabo certainly seems disturbed and greatly disquieted in the mind). It's also one of the few times GW doesn't directly link the Primarch's character to that of his legion.

The Hammer

Another definition of Russ is the Viking traders who gave modern-day Russia its name - land of the Russ. This is also where the word slave comes from - Norse traders captured the native Slavs and sold them.

When soldiers think, it's called routing.

Ugh bit off topic but Slave comes from and old French word which itself ha dits roots in medieval Latin.

'shortening of old French esclave. equivalent of medieval Laien sclava (feminine) Slavonic (captive)'

He means the film "Death Race 2000", although I don't think Sly's character was called anything like Perturabo. Ah yes, the_trooper has already noted that his name in the film was Viterbo.

Some names, I'm sure, have pretty obscure influences - perhaps even Rick Priestley doesn't know exactly where some name came from. Leman Russ, Roboute Gulliman and Rogal Dorn are some of the first names made up for primarchs, appearing - as they do - in the first Rogue Trader rulebook. The chances are that they were just invented off the top of Rick's head.

Lion El'Jonson - yeah, well, that one's pretty obvious. Crappy poem.
Konrad Kurze - Joseph Conrad wrote Heart of Darkness with its main character, Kurtz. Conrad also wrote Nostromo, giving the Night Lords their homeworld. Kurze was eventually killed by the Callidus assassin M'Sheen - a reference to Martin Sheen who played the assassin, Captin Willard, in the Vietnam adaptation of Heart of Darkness, Apocalypse Now.

The others are either simply made up (Gulliman et al), loose historical or mythical references (Jaghatai was a son of Ghengis Khan) or classic GW cod latin (Ferrus Manus - I mean, for heaven's sake! I bet that one kept them up all night!).
