Why wouldn't you just get a griffon mortar?
(other than looks, which are cool).

You could get 3 of these in one slot on the force organization table, as opposed to one Griffon mortar. If cost wasn't a driving issue, you could get more firepower with these. CE

The trial rules don't seem to say what happens if the crew is killed, How many do you need before the mortar is inoperable? can you move crew among guns? can you buy additional crew? I don't like the centaur look too much but a 45 point fast open-topped rhino is great for suicide command or vet squads.

As far as converting old ork lobbas....... well...... they just wouldn't look as good. Those are BIG guns and look nice. The real question might be why don't the ork players buy those and use those ase cannons.

I don't like the centaur look too much but a 45 point fast open-topped rhino is great for suicide command or vet squads. I'm also baffled as to why Warwick wouldn't simply say they are an artillery unit and be done with it. All the rules for that nonsense are in the rulebook (in the unit types: "Artillery" section) and I thought that was the whole point of putting stuff like that in the rulebook so you'd easily have some consistency in the game. I'm going to have to send him an email. . .

That Centaur looks like nothing more than a beefed up knock off of a Bristish Universal Carrier: With minimal work one could convert one for 40k purposes and at a fraction of the cost too... (especially since 1/35 is so much bigger than GW's "Heroic 28mm")

Edit: Actually I don't see that in the trial rules, justb that it is a heavy support choice. Can you reference that?

Actually, if you took three detatchments of three mortars, you could fit nine large blast templates into a single force org. all 48 inch guess range. Nice.... can you imagine if they were ap3?

The it would be broken, but since we all play marines its perfectly balanced.
|
With the galaxy as large as it is the odds of the average guardsmen seeing and fighting a marine or MEQ are relatively slim. Unfortunately the guardsmen in your (and anyone else who plays IG's) army are the REALLY, REALLY LUCKY ones that fight marines ALL the time... |

I would love it. Thats a proper troopy guard list- lots of troops, lots of fire support but not heavy strength low AP stuff. Quite balanced. Of course the marine players would still scream. Would be lethal to Nid and troopy eldar or Tau (at least until theyb were blown off the board by speeders/Tau indrect rockets/biovores or Lictors).

Universal Carrier doesn't look half as cool as this, and from the looks isn't near as big either.
People who look at Forge World stuff aren't overly concerned about money paid.
Death Korp would just look amazing on the battlefield. Great stuff...

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die. |

People who look at Forge World stuff aren't overly concerned about money paid. Very true. I have spent a ridiculous amount of money in the last two months. But as long as I have fun with it is all that matters. And I just ordered a battery of heavy mortars. I couldn't resist three large blast templates. I'm such a Guard whore.

mortars are 50 points a pop. So for 25 more points than an indirect bassie, you get to lay three templates.... Pretty nice. 9 of these suckers would be an impressive amount of firepower.

And, if the final draft allows them to purchase the "special" shells that the Griffon can access...I swear I will actually buy their special Three Unit deal.
I notice they don't quantify the mortars a "immobile" which would have shied me away from buying them in my guard army as Escalation would wipe them out of your army.
I read them as Artillery Batteries like Ork Kannonz and the like that can move if they wish (just forego shooting that turn).
I like them.

Without a doubt getting two complete sets of mortars and tractors at the end of the month. Those are awesome. After that it will only cost another 1000 dollars or so to finish a complete army. Anyone think these guys would use any tanks at all?

I don't know if the Death Korps infantry list in IAv5 will have tanks, but I do know that IAv1 and IAv3 both make references to Armoured Regiments from Krieg. Many of the tank color profiles are Krieg and the TO&E from IAv1 is the 19th Krieg's Armoured Regiment. Ironically enough, it is the order of battle for their deployment to Taros, Kinrade and Cottrell tipping their hand about IAv3 some 2-3 years before its release.

i love the centaur (if only it was a real world vehicle, i would consider getting one - just like im considering a ferret!!!) i just wonder if they plan on releasing a version with either no crew or a cadian crew? wouldnt mind getting one just for fun as my hq's ride if they do either of those versions! failing that might have to have a 1k krieg force! how sad is that!!! millest

Different crews would be awesome. I will not attach the crew to the vehicle though so I can use them for other guard armies. Any clue when the rough riders will be out...... that is what I am really looking forward to. I might need three sets of mortars. These are just awesome miniatures.

The towed heavy artillery are one of the few forgeworld units that actually seem well balanced and worth their price. They put out excellent hitting power for their cost but balance that with their fragility. As a unit they make a fine addition to a guard army that is entrenched or in a cityfight. In the open they would become instant targets for anti-armor and anti-personnel fire. Since the arty is listed as a battery and is a barage fire weapon that means that it will fire in standard linked template form, right? If that is the case one well placed barrage could take out even a well-spaced unit of gaunts. The centaurs are a neat but ultimately superflous add-on. They have the statline of rhinos and would basically serve as mobile targets for your opponent. Later they would have the more practical purpose of being a 135-point smoking barricade in front of the battery.
