Hi every one, this is my first post on Dakka Dakka.

Ive been looking over the forums and their seems to be a lot of IG Pros, and I was hoping you guys could answer a few questions/ discuss IG army building options.

I have a billion questions so Ill list them below.

1. Are 5 man storm trooper squads with 2 plas good?

2. Are Armored fist squads good?

2.b If so should there sergeant be upgraded to veteran considering he is more the 12'" away from comand squad

3. Why are suicide squads so good?: If you take a suicide squad and deep strike is not allowed (in a tournament situation) then right off the bat your down about 40 points (about half the squads points because their at least at half efficiency.)

4. Do IG basic squads need special weapons?: I’ve been thinking about using 75 point autocannon squads and 85 point lascannon squads.

5. Are sentinels good at anything?: They could be good at taking table quarters and achieving objectives + deep striking behind tanks but they are sooooooo weak

Hmmm I think that’s it for now, thanks in advance for you help.

This isn't a supercool discussion, and it's hard to read. That alone kills any drive I had to give advice.

Keldrin and Durandal, welcome to dakka. You're sarcastic comments and witty statements sure will help you fit in here.

Here are your answers:
1. Yes. Min/maxing with special weapons is good, but hardened vets can do it better.( 3 special weapons)
2. When I play an AF squad, I give them heavy bolters and flamers to maximize their infantry killiness.
b. This is a good idea, but I never do because if they fall back, it's normally no big deal.
3. Once again the whole min/max thing comes into play. The more special weapons the better, and the ability to put them exactly where you want helps.
4. Hardened vets w/ 3 meltas work better than a sentinel at landing behind tanks. Sentinels work against low strength (3) units that they can tie up in CC.

My two cents, for what it's worth:

1. Storm troopers are somewhat frowned upon. Harden Vets do everything storm troopers do, but better. You can have a Harden vet unit with 3 special weapons which cost the same as a similar sized ST unit with 2 special weapons.

2. Armored fist: Depends on your list? If you are going mechinzed, then why not. If you have points to burn, maybe. Usually the rule of thumb for guard is keep them cheap and numerous!

2b. I would use Iron Discipline and try to keep most of the units close together and in cover, again it depends on your build.

3. Suicide squads usually make their points back in kills. A 40pts suicide squad is worth it's weight in gold, if it can pop a tank which cost 2x or more than itself. The Drop Troop doctrine is often used for these guys.

4. Yes, I'd do Las/Plas squads all the way. Autocannon's are ok, I guess it depend on what types of armies you face in your gaming area. If you face alot of MeQ type forces then go Las/Plas, if you face Orks, Tau and other "softer" armored armies, then go Autocannon. However most of the times I have been adviced to have at least 6 plus LasCannons at 1500pts, preferably more.

5. Sentinels...Better choices could be made, again it all depends on the list you have in mind. If you are going mech Infantry, then probably not. Drop troop? Maybe if you have points to spare. Rough Riders or Hellhounds seem to be the 2 popular choices for Fast Attack slots. They are rather fragile.

These are just my 2 cents, take it for what it's worth. Maybe some other hardcore IG players will chime in...

Thanks,
Chappy P!

AF SQDs- Generally good combo is standard Chimera with M-laser,HB, and Las/plas INF SQD. Tank pops troops and INF pops tanks. No need to upgrade the SGT in any way shape or form.
Note: Don't use a single Chimera as the entire AT section from your oppenent will make it go poof. 2 or more are muich better, if not required.

Command HQ- NO upgrades other than a Flag and HI.

Platoon HQs make good suicide drop troops too. You already have to take them. A few specials (4) and you can make their points back. Note I only do this when I have a few more PHQs for my LD bubble.

I never use STs as they take less specials and don't do much better vs. incoming fire.

Line sqds should have complementing HW/SW. Las/Plas and AC/Plas. LC for tanks and AC for light transports. The Xtra shots from the AC will help you get the kills you need.

1. Are 5 man storm trooper squads with 2 plas good?

No use hardened veterans they are a lot better. Same BS but 3 special weapons. Most people take deep strike which allows all your infantry and sentinels to deep strike for free. So then the vets drop in with either meltas or plasma and kill vehicles or termies. Remember to keep them cheap. They are suicide squads but usually kill more than thier own value in points.

2. Are Armored fist squads good?

I dont really like them other than for fluff. Its a way to get a few more shots off. Give them a Hvy Blter then make it fire out of the top hatch. Personally I dont really take them. I would say conscript platoons are better.

3. Why are suicide squads so good?: If you take a suicide squad and deep strike is not allowed (in a tournament situation) then right off the bat your down about 40 points (about half the squads points because their at least at half efficiency.)

With drop troops deep strike is free. Also suicide squads are never good unless they are designed to do one job and manage to kill thier own points as in the case of hard vets.

4. Do IG basic squads need special weapons?: I’ve been thinking about using 75 point autocannon squads and 85 point lascannon squads.

Autocannons are junk. Never take them they are the least cost effetive weapon in the entire IG inventory. Heavy bolters are much much better. Only against light walkers and vehicles are autocannons superior. In which case your better off with krak missiles and lascanons.

5. Are sentinels good at anything?: They could be good at taking table quarters and achieving objectives + deep striking behind tanks but they are sooooooo weak

Yes, they are good at blowing up and taking a lot of guardsmen with them. The only time I have ever been happy with their perfomance was when I fought a 1000 suns player and they got into hand to hand (2 of them) with a defiler. It tied up the defiler for the rest of the game. The BS is too low and they are too expensive to use as suicide squads meaning they will rarely kill thier own value in points. Also they are the crappiest walker in the game, lower armor possible and no S10 weapon like all the other walkers.

"Do NOT ask me if you can fire the squad you forgot to shoot once we are in the assault phase, EVER!!!"

ZOMG HIHI HI HI HI HI HI H IHI HI HI!

UHM OHKAY!

I have a billion questions so Ill list them below.

HAHAHA THAT NOT A BILLION!

1. Are 5 man storm trooper squads with 2 plas good?

THEY ARE BETER THAN FLASHLIGHTS!

No, really, take Hardened Vets with maxed plas. Also, you can take a good weapon for your Sarge, which I believe the Storm Troopers can't do. Also, you can do a lot of other nifty crap. Remember that Hardened Vets aren't 0-1 if you take the Doctrine.

2. Are Armored fist squads good?

A LOT BETTER THAN THE UNARMORED TOE SQUADS HAHAHAH LOLZ?

Sorta. Chimeras are useful as mobile hills that block LOS to your plasma-laden Command Squads, or obscure a valuable Leman Russ. Chimeras also let you move infantry around, and pack a light-vehicle killing multilaser. BUT Chimeras require care.
2.b If so should there sergeant be upgraded to veteran considering he is more the 12'" away from comand squad

ZOMG WAT U THINK? ALSO I TYPE SMALL NOW HAHAHA ANNOYING HUH

3. Why are suicide squads so good?: If you take a suicide squad and deep strike is not allowed (in a tournament situation) then right off the bat your down about 40 points (about half the squads points because their at least at half efficiency.)

HAHAHA THEY ARE GREAT BECAUSE THEY HAVE EXPLOSIVE DIARHEA

Because your opponent has to deal with the suicide squad anyways, and because you can protect the suicide squad until it does its job.

4. Do IG basic squads need special weapons?: I’ve been thinking about using 75 point autocannon squads and 85 point lascannon squads.

NO IG ARE THE FLASHLIGHT BOMZ!

IG basic squads do not NEED special weapons. You don't NEED to win at 40K. Get my drift?

5. Are sentinels good at anything?: They could be good at taking table quarters and achieving objectives + deep striking behind tanks but they are sooooooo weak

HAHAHAH THEY GREAT FOR PICKIN UP CHICKS! ALSO FOR KICKING FIELD GOALS U KIDDIN ME 600 YARDS BABY!

Yeah, yeah, obviously sentinels are ok at some stuff. They have good firepower for their points, and they're vehicles / walkers, which lets you hold off any number of S3 enemies. But really, they got shot real easy. You can increase their survivability by hiding them behind hills and tanks and doing little pansy games with them, make them real annoying. But you should NOT take Sentinels unless you already have a lot of vehicle units.

Hmmm I think that’s it for now, thanks in advance for you help.

UR WELCOME! HAHAHHAA DID I HELP U, WOOPS

I concur.

Autocannons do have uses, like hitting skimmers and other light armored vehicles that I have been seeing a lot of recently. All tau will be hurt by them. Heck, Str 7 ap 4... sure the ap 4 isnt a marine killer bu the str 7 means 5s to glance AV 12 which are just about every common transport (devil fish, chimeras or what ever the ig transport is called), baslisks, and anything built off of the rhino chassis. With the 2 shots you get from it, they are worth it.

Grow some hair on them peaches, soldier!

We'll be fine. EoT refugees won't take us down that easy.

Autocannons are nice below 1200 points. No real AV 14, and if there is, deep strike of meltas. Lascannons are a must above that though. I personally don't like using the Heavy Bolter on my infantry, since massed flashlights and Leman Russ pieplates kill them just as much. I personally field two Infantry Platoons, one with 3 Guard Squads each packing an Autocannon and Plasma Gun, while the four squads in the second Platoon are standard Las/Plas. PHQ's are melta suicide squads, and two Storm Trooper double plasma 8-mans hang in the back and act as cheapo countercharge with decent enough armor to last for two assault phases instead of one.

Missile launchers are for the indecisive. Have your squads either pack Lascannons or HB/Autocannon. Plasma Gun special weapons are prerequisites in line squads. flamers sometimes work for droppers, or if you pair it with an HB in COD. Meltas are too short range for line squads, and grenade launchers...well, I'd rather not open Pandora's box. Just pay the extra two points for a Plasma Gun.

Back to topic.

The last Hall of Heroes Tourney I played in (oh did I mention that I won with guard?... sorry), 3 of 4 missions were escalation, so scouting in a few extra heavy weapons out of your fast attack slot never hurts.

That being said... I didn't take sentinels
