I don't get it! Music these days is garbage! What happened to good old Bob Dylan and Neil Young? That was good music!

Also, I'm a teenager. I'm constantly surrounded by fools who blindly worship talentless profiteers. I can't stand today's music.

What you actually meant to say is
"I don't get it! Music that I am exposed to these days, because I don't want to actually go out and find stuff that I like, is garbage! What happened to good old Bob Dylan and Neil Young? Or other songwriters who are much younger, but I'm ignoring them for the sake of my complaint! That was good music! Much like lots of the music that I can't be bothered to go and find!"

There's plenty of good music around today if you look for it. If you take mass market tweenie pop then what do you expect? I grew up in the late 80s early 90s and I can assure you some of the music produced then was execrable but there was still decent stuff being produced.

While I agree with this statement, I think another reason it's easier to find a good album from decades past is because that generations music has gone and is defined so you can hand pick the best stuff that

came from that era and ignore the gakky stuff, whereas with current music none of the bands have a classic rock status to back up there talent you have to go and find the diamonds hidden beneath a large pile

of gak for yourself.

Green Day became famous because Mike Dirnt got stoned and thought up the song Longview (go listen to it, there's no denying somebody had to have been on drugs to think up that song), which was their first popular song...so it's not always a bad thing for artists. Not sure if Miley Cyrus is considered an "artist" though...

There is still good music today. It's just good music is drowned out by the stuff teenagers love.

Same as happened with Bob Dylan and Neil Young. I mean, Dylan's 'Like a Rolling Stone' would be his most iconic, and probably most successful song. It was released in 1965, and became the 19th most successful song of the year. Which sounds okay, but let's look at the stuff that beat it out;

1. Unchained Melody - Righteous Brothers
2. My Girl - Temptations
3. I Can't Help Myself - Four Tops
4. I Got You Babe - Sonny and Cher
5. You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' - The Righteous Brothers
6. I Got You (I Feel Good) - James Brown
7. Hang on Sloopy - McCoys
8. Stop! In The Name Of Love - Supremes
9. Help! - The Beatles
10. I Do - Marvelows
11. King Of The Road - Roger Miller
12. Wolly Bully - Sam The Sham and the Pharoes
13. In The Midnight Hour - Wilson Pickett
14. Shotgun - Jr Walker and the All-Stars
15. What's New Pussycat - Tom Jones
16. California Girls - Beach Boys
17. Downtown - Petula Clark
18. Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me - Mel Carter
19. Like A Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan

It's happy, clappy pop music. That stuff dominates. But it doesn't mean the really good stuff stops existing, it just means you aren't going to find it on commercial radio.

Maybe, there's also the issue that not everyone is attracted to big boob curvy chicks. I agree that Miley Cyrus isn't the most stunning girl ever, but straight up good looks isn't the only part of the story, and nor is purity.

I agree with the purity thing, and think Britney's pure and innocent/complete slapper on/off routine was pretty much perfectly maintained, and explained why she managed to claw ahead of performers like Christina Aguilera despite having a much, much weaker voice.

But just being famous counts for a hell of a lot.

But it's all part of the 'good role model' nonsense that just keeps cycling over and over again, generation after generation.

None of these girls are living the pure, innocent lives that management sells. They all stop with the 'sweet, just a good honest Christian girl routine', because it stops selling when they turn 18. When the next girl comes along playing the same routine, please just understand it's going to be management led nonsense.

Greenday's first two albums sound like a bunch of kids sitting their parent's basement, playing music and smoking dope all day long. And they're good albums because of it.

After that it all gets pretty crappy.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

I don't know, she doesn't seem any more or less pretty than any other pop singer or actress. She's bland in terms of the image her appearance conveys, but that's entirely the result of marketing, and probably jading on the part of people our (mid-twenties) age. I mean, at least speaking personally, I stopped noticing classically attractive women around age 20. Now I'm more likely to drool over Rosario Dawson or Christina Hendricks than Jessica Alba or Olivia Wilde.

How do you quantify "good"? I mean, how do you subjectively claim that the Bob Dylan song actually was better then the songs it lost to; what sort of metric do you measure by? Commercial success is a much loathed way of measure quality as seen by the disdain held by the entry of Stephen King into the NY Times top 10 of the year, but at the end of the day I think that's the only really unbiased way to measure it. Which means, I guess, that Baywatch was the best show on TV and Mcdonalds is the best restaurant in the world?... now I'm confused as to what my point was.
