Oh, those do look good!

Reminds me of the first army I ever put together for 40K. I did Tyranids from an Ice world as well! Bright blue skin and shiny black carapaces. I had... no clue what I was doing at the time. But I got an army painted up and was a proud chap. I'll have to dig em' up.

Ohgodtheylookawful. Shame and wonder. Its like all I knew how to do was drybrush.

Anyway.

Your little spots you add to their 'soft' skin is a great little touch. Doing it on a mess of gaunts is a lot of work and really a labor of love.

What really impresses me is what you are doing with the carapace bits. The textured coating, along with the brilliant blue/white stripes look great, and I'm sure it is going to look excellent on the big bugs. Also drool. Drool makes em' look like they're gonna bite you every time you reach down to move the model.

Killer work.

Thanks guys! Will be painting up a few gaunts, and if the blending goes well on the scythes, I'll also paint the the trygon's scythes in the same way.

I realised the other day that I might actually run out of GW snow on my trygon's base, which would be rather annoying.

Back again! Sorry for the long absence, been busy job hunting again, but looks like I may have two secured soon so that's great

Going to continue painting today, and will post updated photos very soon! Will be painting the Gaunts, Trygon, and then start painting my Hive Tyrant also!

So I've started painting the scythes with the new blending idea. Think its going well so far! Will obviously get better at blending as I do more of these. Done 2 gaunts so far. And since I've not done wet blending on the models before really, other than a few hooves on some of the 2 of the gaunts a while ago, its not too bad an attempt I think.

I also decided to add some ardcoat to the previously completed gaunts, on the carapace, and it looks good. Going to do that for all the carapaces now.

Thank you! Its going to look more impressive on the Trygon I believe. But don't want to risk painting him until I'm sure I've got the technique right xD

Wow, I really like the colour scheme and the bases look pretty damn nifty too; I wish my painting had improved as much as yours in the last ten years!!

I'm also glad to see that your experience with the Fairy Power Spray matched mine, tried that recently and wasn't too impressed, I think I'll still with the Diall in future even if it is like working with a handful of snot

Thanks guys, I'm really happy with how this is turning out so far. I'm a little nervous for when it comes to painting my hive tyrant though, as I haven't airbrushed in so long, slightly worried nothing will work and I might have forgot everything xD

7 years... I have returned again, after a seven year gap! Long story short, I moved, got a job, got engaged, lots of life stuff basically! But never forgot my Tyranids, was hoping to come back to them!
So last week I managed to acquire them. Unfortunately, due to family not really knowing what they were, they were stored in a box, kind of haphazardly thrown in there, up in the attic.
I salvaged everything I could, and took them all home. Below you can see how they are:

As you can see, they are a little dusty, and Spike has sustained some damage... he has lost his green stuff'd spikes on his head, and yet his "drool" has managed to somehow stay present, although slightly bent now! I should be able to repair this however and make some new, perhaps better spikes! The dust is a big issue though, as it seems to have fused to the carapaces, they should be shiny... I have already brushed over all the models to get as much dust off as possible. I am thinking I could go over with a damp paintbrush and carefully see if I can restore the black glossiness.

Below is what I currently have in terms of models to build:

Still have some Termagants to build, my Hive Tyrant, and some new Warriors that I bought from an awesome local store.

Tools I have:

Still have the airbrush too!

And last but certainly not least... I have updated my paint scheme! Now it includes the changes I made over the entirety of this thread, and I have simplified the process as well.

This does mean I will have to go over the already painted models with some washes of white in order to lighten the skin. I was also thinking of painting a nice thin white line along the edges of the scythes to help them stand out. I have decided that the glowing blue pattern will look better leading up to the outer edge/apex of the carapaces, rather than just stuck in the middle and ending before the edge.
The snow on the finished stands has gone a little yellow and flat looking, also need to figure out how to fix that.

If anyone who followed along and commented on this thread previously is still here, I will be happily surprised! But hello to all the new users who will see this for the first time!

Thank you @Crispy78!
Ok so I have managed to clean the models, using water and a paint brush did actually work out fine, like I hoped it would! They look much better now.
I have ordered a wet palette, looking forward to using that. I have decided that I probably won't be using my airbrush going forward, as its one of the things that stopped me painting before, due to the setup and learning curve and trial by error I have to do each time I use it. Therefore I will be using layering and dry brushing techniques. I know that I will have more fun spending time on each model, making them look good!

Another thing that stopped me was worrying about what weapons and accessories I should give each model. I have now decided to go with the rule of cool, and not to worry about min maxing and what the meta is, as I will not be playing competitively, and I still have yet to learn the game anyway. If I do, it will just be for fun.

So my next steps will be:
  • Repairing Spike. Fixing his green stuff areas, redoing his drool, gluing back on some of his spikes.

  • Repainting the skin areas of all my nids with washes of Fenrisian Grey, and layering on white for the highlights.

  • Using Drakenhof Nightshade much more sparingly this time. Only in the deep recesses of the models.

  • Unknown where I will use the Guilliman blue glaze at the moment, maybe over the skin if I feel it needs more blue, but I may do it as a wash over the carapace to give it a nice beetle like sheen.

  • Paint up the bioluminescent areas of the carapace and spots on the skin for all models, detailing, wet blending the scythes, etc.

  • Build the last 4 gants, attach the Hive Tyrant's tail to the base, probably will drill it, magnetise his wings, glue the rest together. Build the new Warriors.

  • Snow and ice effects on the bases.

  • As for future models, I think I would love to get a Gargoyle brood, a Carnifex, Hive Guard, Zoanthrope.

Always warms my heart to see an old army get pulled out of it's hibernation. Will be cool to see it grow.

Abaut the old dust, have you considered using a can of compressed air, used to clean electrical equipment? If it's held close to the model, it might be powerful enough to blow the dust off?

Welcome back to the hobby! I like your thinking, the rule of cool trumps! I've had a similar experience - in my early teens I was concerned about modeling and painting "the right way", aka trying to copy the studio models. When I came back to the hobby a few years ago, I decided that I'd go by the rule of cool and paint individual models and squads first. Armies are not a priority as I'm not too interested in the gaming.

I really like you color scheme, those biolumenescence spots are a great detail! Looking forward to see your collection evolve.

Thanks Zywus! I did consider that yes, but I figured if physically brushing it wasn't enough, then that might not have made much difference. The water definitely helped though.

    Thank you mcmattila!

A little update on my progress! My partner helped screw down my Hive Tyrant into the base. I chose to have it done this way as its a piece of bark that I used, I was concerned that if it was just super glued to the surface it would just tear off the top layer. I can easily cover the head of the screw with snow and tufts etc.

Can't even see the screw from the front angle, which is good.

Speaking of snow, I have some ak snow sprinkles on the way, as this has the best sparkly wet realistic snow I have seen. Also ordered some glass chips to help with ice effects. Will also try making some icicles by using some old spare see through bases.
Also, I repaired some of the damage to Spike. Fixed one of his missing prong things on his back, and a missing spike on his tail:

Next up will be rebuilding his green stuff spikes on his head, and also making the drool more obvious and strong by going over with even more pva glue lol.

Originally I was going to put spikes all up the bone segments on the end of his tail, I only got as far as doing 4 previously, trying to decide if I should continue with that or not.
I also need to decide if I will go for a glowing effect on my nids' eyes. Might test it out when I start painting again.

I have done the green stuff work on Spike! He now has his spikes back haha. I also finished off the tail, not sure if it was worth the effort! Repaired a few tiny spikes too, again, not sure its worth it as its such small details, it may not be noticeable once repainted.

I also made the last 4 Termagants! I decided to bend their tails to give them more dynamic movement. Really happy with how it looks, but it's annoying I didn't think to do this with all my previously made ones!

Also started on my Warriors. Once everything is built and greenstuffed, bases too, I will be priming them all in black together.

Bending the tails seems so obvious, yet I’m not sure I’ve seen it done before. Wish I had thought of it 3 dozen gaunts ago.

    Nice repair work.

On WYSWYG, I don’t care a whole lot for my nids, but did put magnets on my Flyrant’s weapon arms. How many non-bug players know the difference between scything talons or rending claws anyway? Or the assorted cannons? I’ll do some magnets to swap between shooty or stabby loadouts, so opponents have some idea of how it will kill them. But things like my Trygon I just glued on the bits I thought looked best. If I field it as a mawlock/prime/normal; it’s a burrowing bug, I’ll go over the details at the start of the mission with my opponenet. And what it has on its tail is not going to shift the battle.

Thank you @Nevelon! Yes I agree, its not so big a deal with nids, and if I ever learn to play, I will do the same and make it clear what setup each has if its not obvious

Did a much better job with the green stuff this time, giving proper horns to my 4 new gants.

Built the new warriors too! Tried to give them somewhat interesting poses:

This guy is my favourite I think!

I also found a replacement rock for Spike's base, he was going to have a rock with an overhang to wrap around, and I could then place some icicles hanging from it. So done that, and put rocks and cork on all the new bases too. Everything is primed black too now, ready to get onto painting!

    Made in gb
    Elite Tyranid Warrior

I finished painting a Termagant with the new and improved scheme, and I am super proud of it! Its definitely the best mini I have painted so far. The process I used was; base coat of Fenrisian Grey on all skin (2 layers), Temple Guard Blue on the gun and tongue (2 layers), wash of Drakenhof Nightshade, then layers of whiter Fenrisian on all the highlight areas. The spots are Teclis blue and a dot of white scar, hooves are 2 layers of Teclis blue and then white blended on top, same for claws and carapace pattern. Then the sand texture gel mixed with Abaddon Black for the carapace, around the glowing pattern, avoiding it. Then highlighting the carapace edges with thin lines of Fenrisian first and then white.
It's not quite finished yet, need to do gloss on the carapace and around the mouth, and the base of course, but really happy with how this turned out so far!

    Looks amazing!

Ready to paint 90 more of those guys to that standard? My only concern is for your sanity painting to that level on something that should be done in volumes enough to carpet planets. But if you can pull it off, it will be epic.

Thank you Nevelon! Well I don't actually plan on having 90 haha, more like the set amount for each type of the ones I like, so that would be 10 of these guys. But honestly, I don't mind putting in the time to make them look good, that is the whole fun for me

I finished that gant now, put ardcoat on the carapace and around the mouth for drool, and a coat of Stormshield to protect the rest of the model. The snow was achieved with a mix of AK Snow Sprinkles, Citadel Snow that came in the Northern Wastes basing kit, and pva glue. Love how it glitters! I also bought some clear blue glass chippings, in order to place on the bases to give the effect of chunks of ice!

Next, I am working on finishing the rest of the Gants, they have the skin base coat on so far. Will do one of the Warriors too, or maybe I will get the base coat done on everything at once, including the flyrant, we will see! I also have a plan for making my own ripper swarms too!
