That's nifty. The RT era Libby is a nice piece, as are the old skool Termies.

I can't do all metal Marines, but I can do an all-metal Guard army.

To my shame, I no longer have my original egg Sentinels, but a benefit of being old is the ability to have collected a 2nd Ed all metal IG army!



Leaving out vehicles and the plastic heavy weapons with the Praetorians at the back, this is a small portion of the 450 odd figure army that I have spent the last 17 years wasting my money on/ having a grand time with.*

Even at the time it was normal, I thought foot IG armies were the work of the mad. So many troopers. Very nice looking though.

Recently, the ancient dead were brought to my mind, so I thought for this Friday I’d take the camera for a trip through my own old boneyard. I didn’t drag everything out for a photoshoot, but here is a sample:

Skull chucker. I was so irritated when I lost the ability to field these when the VC/TK split happened.


A pair of command elements. The rest of the block of skeletons would be plastic, but the guys in front were metal.


With the exception of a handful of metal ones scattered in with the plastic. These are some of the earliest GW minis I owned, originally bought as foes for D&D.


While I think of the Dogs of War as a new thing, most would consider them quite old. They did have a nice multi-culteral undead unit, so it’s not all human skeletons


Spirit Hosts? Nah, we just fielded blocks of ghosts.


Or wraiths. Nagash+8 wraiths w/standard and musician=1,500 point army, 9 models.


And if wraiths on foot weren’t bad enough, they could be mounted as characters. I found this guy on a trip once, covered in dust at the back of the rack. He was old at the time, and that was back in the 90’s.

It’s Friday again! Here is part two of my undead army. For reference, I played WHFB primarily in 5th edition, The one with the bretonian/lizardman starter box. This was back in the mid/late 90s. The primary theme of my army eventually coalesced into undead bretonians. Lead into battle by the dread Nevelon the Betrayer:

A mounted vampire lord, made for one of the campaign packs, could be fielded as a named character, the Red Duke. This was before the bloodlines stuff.

With some extra help from mounted heroes:



Centaurs used to be a thing. They were a unit in the chaos book, with some very old minis (which I never had) I did kit bash a number for both my undead and chaos armies. Particularly proud of the wight one. The mounted wraith is based on a DE darkrider, with his face dremeled out and a homemade scythe. He drinks a lot less the the one from last week. And before mummies got all uppity and stormed off to their own army book, they could be fielded as heroes. His job was to soak challenges so the vampire could blender units.


Mummies could also be fielded as blocks of troop. They were painfully slow, but crazy tough. Carrion were another thing (besides the skullchuckers) I missed when the split happened. They murdered solo wizards and artillery crews. Giant bats just weren’t the same.


And some necromancers and vampires on foot. The necros hold up well compared to modern sculpts, IMHO. Isabella and Vlad on the other hand, not so much.

Unfortunately, due to a huge sell off 10 years ago, I no longer have much in the way of my original stuff, some as early as '92. Something that I regret.
But I have some left and, along with some re-buys, means I've got some stuff I can share. I repainted these a little while ago:



Epic will always remain my favourite GW system and my collection is large to say the least. Here's an Artillery Company:

So I decided to take on Nevelons challenge of an all metal army and took out my mostly 2nd ed Eldar:



From left to right, Wraithguard, Reapers with Ra, Wraithlords, Warlocks with Avatar, Swooping Hawks, Warp Spiders, Banshees, Firedragons with Exarch and Avengers with Asuryen. I have Jain Zar floating about somewhere too. With wargear they come to about 2k.

I remember getting a scout bike, and a few years later, I looked for it and could not find it. I then wrote it off that I got angry and destroyed it, but I would never destroy a GW mini today.

It’s friday, time to grab the cameras and featherdusters! Today I hit the chaos shelf.

Remember when dragon ogres were just large, not comically huge?


I love multi-pose plastics. They let you have a lot of different poses in your army, rather then just the same 4-8 guys over and over again. But single sculpts just have so much more flavor.

And some HQs. Yes, that's a DE sorceress; might be Morathi. One of the themes in my WoC army was "when Dark Elves go too far”. I’ve got some mounted marauders made with old dark riders, and a group of “when witch elves go bad” made from howling banshees. But I’ll save them for later.

I much prefer those old Dragon Ogres. Fantasys scaling just went nuts tbh :(

This week’s installment has a bit of conversion work done, but still mostly the old minis they are based on.

Those elder Chaos players who have not yet degenerated into gibbering spawn a/o been elevated to demonhood might recall the old retinue rules for constructing a chaos army. You took a character, and then needed to make them a warband of troops equal to their points. Continue adding these until you reached the point limit. Irritating mechanically, but could lead to some nice fluffy lists. As I mentioned last week, one of the themes in my old chaos army was “when witch elves go bad”. Elves/Eldar and Slannesh, they go so well together. I could have gone with khorne, but screw the psychology rules.


Simple weapon swap, the death boomerang for a big ol’ axe. Suddenly the queen of 80’s hair is cutting a swath through the old world.


With her girls backing her up. They didn’t make chaos warriors with additional handweapons at the time, so I cut off pistols and rattled around my bits box for things to stab with.


Some alternate characters, on old steeds of slannesh. I’m not fond of the boob-snakes/giant slugs things they’ve turned into. The banshee riding side-saddle is a newer sculpt then the ones making up the block of troops. They were in the process of re-sculpting the aspects warriors at the time, some were OK (like the banshees) others not so much (scorpions). It’s worth noting that the guns I cut off the troops were laspistols, which was one of the reasons the like was getting updated. HE dragonknight there on the right, just so you don’t think it’s all about the ladies.


GW didn’t make a chimaera at the time. This one was made by harlequin miniatures. The only reason I know that is I kept the box, which still had the $19.99 price tag on it. Nurgle was my god of choice when I wasn’t serving Slannesh. +1T was alway fun. And converting stuff to the lord of decay was not a hard thing to do for someone with just basic skills.

IIRC (and it was a while ago) the one GW made was not even remotely the right scale for a monster in WHFB. It fit on a calvary base, and had been OOP for years. My time in fantasy was the mid 90’s, while my 40k time started in the late 80s. But any information about a GW chimera was rumors/myths/legends.

I seem to recall that chimera was on one of the Combat Cards they did around 1990. I had all the sets as it was nice to see the painted miniatures.



I'm a bit late for friday, so here's my contribution, 3rd edition Fantasy. I bought it seond hand for £3 back in the day, and played this until upgrading to 5th edition. What was great was that you got all the rules for the armies in the back so the book really was a complete game. But they hadn't worked out distinct armies or the concept of allies, so in D&D style, all races were described in terms of lawful, good, neutral, evil and chaotic, IIRC. And an army could be made up of things that ally with something that is only one place up or down the scale. So evil things can't ally with things in the same army as good.

There were rules for wacky things like giant snails as a mount but only able to more 2" per turn making them the slowest cavalry and the magic was a lot more laborious. I will always remember the game where we played a siege and the giant uprooted a tree from the terrain and thrashed a castle wall until it fell down. It took so long that the snail riders managed to reach the castle wall and slime up the side of it to begin their prolonged assault.



The colour sections are pretty limited and there's a lot of rules text throughout so isn't especially interesting to photograph. But here's a good spread showing some of the models of the time. The picture on the bottom left accurately shows what a fantasy game looked like in practice. In the background of the bottom right picture is a large flesh coloured figure being used as a giant. I have a couple of these and they were troll in part of an early 54mm scale range of polythene figures that citadel did under the 'Fighting Fantasy' logo, the packets came with a skull shaped blister and figures came with interchangeable weapons and even heads.

That vampire model isn't Vlad. It's just a generic vampire lord.

That is the one I am thinking of.

They had an earlier one, sculpted by either Bryan Ansell, or one of the Partha Sculptors working for Citadel (Meier and Mize both did some work for Citadel).

But the earlier one was even smaller (goat/panther sized).

Damn I miss that guy (both of them).

I loved Epic, one of the things that pushed me into the Games Workshop hobby.. They changed the rules set and killed the game... I fear 9th edition Warhammer will be a repeat of this.

Another Flashback for me, with the Harlequin codex coming out, how back in early editions it was normal for new players to pick up the red book compendium and the Harlequin box set and have an complete army cheap.. Seemed like back in the day every other army in the St Louis area was Harlequin. One campaign we played was jokingly called "The Great Harlequin Slaughter of 90"

I've dug out a few old posters on a visit to my parents this week. First is one given out when they released Gorkamorka, mostly it's just artwork and photos that would appear in the rulebooks. Nice at the time though.



This is some 'eavy metal poster, lots of nice old miniatures painted up. I've no idea where this came from.



Last isn't really GW but a spin off from Fighting Fantasy where you'd call up to have an adventure. I've no idea if this ever caught on. Maybe someone here did it at the time?

We called it, got a couple of minutes in, found it dragged on a lot (well, duh), and gave up on it.

A fair while. It wasnt until 2nd ed that you could get more Tyranid wise than some metal Gaunts, plastic warriors, plastic genestealersm, the classic 4 claw Carnifex, Zoats and squigs (which at that point were sort of lumped in with Nids and Orks at the same time IIRC). Of course there were the various Genestealer cult figures but the connection between the two was less clear cut (and/or even thought through) at that point. I may have forgotten some.

Almost a decade.... Maybe over a decade, if we are not counting Space Hulk.

I had so many of those Termegants (although we wouldn't find out they were called that for that decade).

I remember being in Nottingham, talking to one of the Ric(k)s about the Tyranids, and getting an explanation of where the ammo for their guns comes from.

See... Their guns are living things, which have to be fed in order for them to have the materials to shoot at their enemies.

And it would be inconvenient to have wastes that needed to be cleaned out of their weapons. Soooooooo....

They also showed me a Tyranid Dreadnaught, which ate everything it encountered, and used it for fuel to create everygy blasts to destroy, or disable things at a distance, which it would then go eat....

I don't know how the current Tyranids work (the last I knew about Tyranids was that Space Hulk drove an expansion of them).

We did once use my Termegants in a game of Space Hulk after the additional rules and units came out (after everyone and their dog asked "We the hell don't the SMs in front drop to their knees, or the ones in back shoot over or around the ones in front?").

I don't think the SMs ever won a game of SH we ever played until those new rules and units came out.
