Great rendition of a classic model. You have really done them justice, and nice to see them against a 'classic background colour'

Thanks for sharing

Thanks IGtR. Haha, I always love seeing models with that 90s gradient, all that's missing is the Goblin Green base rime and some astroturf

Thanks Viterbi, I've started to enjoy painting faces now that I've had a bit of practice. Its fun to see the personality of the model emerge once the face is done I've just got the Superior to paint and my first squad of Seraphims will be done!

They're done! I've finally finished off my first squad of Seraphim and I'm pretty happy with how they turned out! Its crazy to think how old these miniatures are but see how well they hold up. I've really started to appreciate the simplicity of metal mono-pose miniatures (I guess subconsciously I already must have grasped this on some level as two of my three armies are comprised almost exclusively by them!). The Superior was a nice opportunity to practice painting power swords as well as plasma coils. I also picked up a pot of Ryza Rust and Typhus Corrosion for the bits of girder strew about on some of my model's bases. I quite like the effect and I think it adds a nice wee spot of colour. I'm also thinking I might add some Middenland tufts if it ever comes back in stock, otherwise I'll have a look at Army Painter or one of the other makers.

My first squad of Seraphims complete!

Additionally, I've also painted up a test model for the Sisters Repentia. I completed their Sister Superior a few months ago but the amount of skin on the Repentia themselves had me a bit intimidated. The faces on Stormtroopers and Seraphim were good practice and after finished up the first Repentia I'm excited to get onto the rest! They are great models with lots of cool little details. I have unfortunately misplaced two of them though so my squad is down some members. If any of you happen to have two spares I'd love to buy them! I'm also missing a few backpacks so again if any of you have some spare let me know

The first of my Sisters Repentia. I was a bit worried about all that skin but I ended up really enjoying the process.

C&C always welcome, thanks for stopping by.

On moon miranda.

Those Seraphim are fantastic, I'm particularly impressed with the plasma/flamer pistols. You make those old models look amazing.

Hello all, sorry for my long absence!

Rest assured hobby action has continued during my radio silence although at a somewhat slower pace. During the many months between my last post and now I have moved interstate, changed jobs and started another degree. In amongst all of this, I unfortunately lost my setup for taking photos and so have been hesitant to document my progress. That combined with the intermittent nature of my hobbying amongst everything else has ultimately led to me neglecting the blog!

So, time for a small update. When last we spoke I had just completed my first Seraphim squad (woohoo!) and had painted up a test mini for the Sisters Repentia. I had also started the not-so-fun task of repainting the red habits of some of the earlier battle sisters I had painted. Fast-forward a month or eight and I have just about finished up all of my Repentia, although as I mentioned in my last update I seem to have misplaced a couple of members of the squad
I have also almost finished my second Seraphim squad, just one more model to go although she first needs to be reprimed. Additionally, all of the old habits of my battle sisters have been repainted providing a consistent shade of redness across the army (hurrah!). Unfortunately, I have yet to photograph any of these so you’ll have to keep an eye out for future posts to see them, ever so sorry.

During my long absence I also painted up one of my favourite Sisters of Battle models, the classic Canoness. I remember first seeing her in an issue of White Dwarf back during 3rd edition and thinking she was the coolest model ever. I didn’t go so far as to replicate the red gun and Goblin Green base she sported back then but she was really fun to paint I did manage to photograph her before moving* so there is at least one picture to show for this update!

The old Canoness, one of my favourite Sisters of Battle miniatures.

I hope you’ve all been well, I’m looking forward to catching up on some of your own P&M blogs to see how everyone’s been getting along.

Until next time,
-zahnib

* After figuring out a new camera setup and taking some test shots I couldn't resist replacing the older pre-move image with a newer one.

Hey zahnib, great to see you posting again! Excellent job with the Canoness, you're really doing the old models justice! I think you've really succeeded with the faces, the skin looks soft and feminine. And I got to say that I love how you've painted the skulls on the bases!

Thanks mcmattila, nice to be back! I've been enjoying getting more comfortable painting faces. The old sisters models have a lot of character and its fun to bring that out

Thanks gobert, hahah eye liner is an essential piece of battlefield kit! And speaking of photography setup, I have come up with a substitute!
--

And that substitute has born fruit! I managed to borrow my housemates camera and with some cardboard boxes and lights cobbled something together. So with that I present to you my finished Repentia squad! I shared a test model a while back and since then I've managed to finish up the rest of the squad. Alas I am missing one member but I'm sure I'll eventually track her down.
These models have been a great opportunity to practice painting skin, it was pretty intimidating at first but I'm pretty happy with the end result.

I've been playing around with the new camera setup so hopefully I will have some more visual updates in the near future. Also I've been thinking that perhaps it is time to revisit my Ultramarines and show them in a better light...

Thanks for stopping by.

Thanks for stopping by Olthannon and yes, absolutely agree with you, that old Canoness is so iconic and really embodies the SoB in a single miniature. Thank you, the reds are something I'm pretty pleased with on them

gobert wrote:Great job on those ladies, the skin practice is clearly paying off nicely. What’s your recipe for the skin? It always looks too harsh a contrast with the shadows when I paint skin

Thanks gobert For the skin I've just been following a recipe from one of GWs early painting videos. I start with a base of Rakarth Flesh, followed by a couple of layer of Kislev Flesh until I get a solid even coat. Then a wash of Reikland Fleshshade (well shaken!). Then I go back in and layer Kislev Flesh and do a final highlight of Flayed One Flesh on the upmost regions.

Thanks youwashock! I thought it was a nice little detail

I'm hoping to show some of my Battle Sisters in the near future as they haven't made an appearance in a while despite making up the bulk of my force. I've also got a couple of the original Sisters I painted up that I showed off in one of my earliest posts. I was pretty happy with them at the time but I've improved quite a bit since then so thought it could be interesting to do a side-by-side, hopefully you can tell the difference But that will have to wait until next time.

Okay, update time! I haven't had much time recently for painting but I have managed to take some photos of miniatures I've been slowly painting over the past year. As I mentioned in my last post I've painted up the majority of my Battle Sisters (aiming for three squads of ten). So I present to you my first completed squad! The other two still have some models left to paint. I was missing a few backpacks but managed to track some down on eBay so once I get back to painting I should hopefully be able to finish off the remaining Battle Sisters.

My first completed squad of Battle Sisters.

I also thought it would be a good opportunity to do a bit of a side-by-side comparison of my earliest SoB miniatures I'd painted and my more recent attempts. I remember when I finished my first SoB miniature I was pretty pleased with the paint job but looking back I think I've improved quite a bit! Those old sisters will get a repaint at some point but until then they are a nice point of comparison.

My first Battle Sister on the left next to one of my more recent Sisters on the right.

I've said it before and I say it again: you're really pulling of those female faces! Excellent work! The rest of the minis look the part too, of course. And yeah, you can definitely see improvement between the models! But I don't think you need to rush the repaint - the old models not bad by any means!

One trick you might consider with the Repentias is to add just a bit of red to their knees, elbows and knuckles. It's super quick to do with some thinned down Carroburg Crimson, but I think it adds quite a bit to a model.

The squad is impressive- very well done! Faces are a weak point for me and you've brought some real skill to how you've done these. Agree with Mcmattila: there is no rush to re-doing the paint on the older Sisters, the differences in skill are nuanced and definitive, but the older paint is still very high level. Rock on!

Looks amazing. The red has more POW and the white has a bit more definition on the newer minis, but that is nitpicking. All together as a squad they will mix just fine.

zahnib,

I can see the improvements with the models side by side and posted triple their normal size. I would leave updating them until the rest of the army is painted. As it stands, no one buy you will notice the difference on the gaming table.

Great work.

Exalted.

Thank you mcmattila, very kind words. I've been working on my second Canoness model (see below) and I'm pretty pleased with the face so far. The sisters have been a great practice for faces!
That's an interesting suggestion, I might give it a try. I used a bit of Carroburg Crimson on the aforementioned Canoness' face scar and it turned out quite nice. Perhaps a lighter coat on the Repentia knees and elbows would give the desired effect.

Thanks Meer_Cat, and welcome to the blog ☺️ They have been a weak point for me as well! But slowly improving with practice. The redo of the older paint jobs is quite far down on the to-do list though will be nice to get to them one day.

Thanks youwashock, the change from my old pots of Red Gore and Blood Red to the new and improved Wazdaka and Evil Sunz Scarlet has provided a bit of a contrast bump. And I hadn't quite figured out a good recipe for white when I painted that first sister.

Thank you Captain Brown ☺️ Haha, yes true the zoomed in shots do favours for no one. Glad to hear that you're all very forgiving of my old paint job

Update time. I've been slowly working away on my second Canoness. I do like the updated 2003(?) model although as I said in an earlier post the original Canoness holds a special place in my heart. But the extra details on the newer one are a nice treat.

]
Work in progress on my second Canoness. Quite happy with the face so far!

I also mentioned a few posts back that after sorting out a new camera setup I wanted to provide some updated pictures of my Ultramarines. I haven't actually done any work on them in quite a few years but they are by far my longest running army and the largest (although most remain unassembled and unpainted). Nonetheless, these Terminators as well as some Dreadnoughts (pics in the works) were the last models I finished and the only ones that aren't in need of a serious repaint. They were also the subject of my first post in this P&M Blog! Overall I'm satisfied with their current paint job although the purity seals and bases need a redo. And the sergeant's banner still needs a transfer

Time for a wee update. I've finished my Canoness, was a lot of fun to paint and quite happy with her in the end. The brazier was a good chance to practise painting fire and I've now become very conscious of peoples style of painting flames. Seems like there are two camps: lighter on the insider, dark on the outside or vice versa. Similar to painting plasma coils I suppose. I've also started on my converted army standard bearer. I had the idea of her many moons ago and picked the necessary parts up off eBay before the Bretonnians when OOP and the prices skyrocketed.

My completed second Canoness. The new(ish) model has lots of nice deals, they face especially has some nice character!

Work in progress on my Army Standard Bearer with a banner borrowed from the old Bretonnian Questing Knights

I've been really enjoying painting the banner bearer so will likely have her finished in the coming week.

I've also been thinking about spicing up my bases a bit and adding some tufts of pale brown grass. Maybe even painting the base rims brown. But we shall see. Let me know your thoughts!

Thanks for stopping by.
