I am actually starting to like the orcs more. Especially with all the head swap suggestions you guys have been mentioning.

I like them. Wish they were all wearing boots, as they would feel more appropriate for sci-fi conversions... but they've managed to find a cool Orc design that doesn't copy the GW aesthetic, which is hard to do.

I like the Orcs, wish they were a tad smaller though, like between Primaris and Human.

They are neat looking models, but even allowing for different aesthetics, I just don't see orcs as having horns on their heads, any more than I see elves or dwarves having horns on their heads (of course, there are examples, even in Warhammer, like some of the Chaos Dwarves, but the adjective is the key). Given that these aren't 'chaos' orcs, or 'demonic' orcs, but just orcs, it seems like a weird choice.

I think if they had called them Oni, or Infernals, or Hell-touched, I wouldn't have blinked about it.

So, I feel like it's a weird move to make orcs look like this (just as I would if you made dwarves small, slightly built, and winged), I think the models are pretty neat and have a distinct look for a faction in their game. The look of the models conveys the nature of the faction really well.

I'm just not sure, marketing-wise, if it's a better choice to call them a recognizable fantasy race, and have them look different, or call them by some less recognizable fantasy race and risk losing out on name recognition. I could see that going either way.

In Germany Gothic was very successful, too. But then Gothic III was terrible so the Elder Scrolls took over

Some people said the same about GW's orcs having jaws the size of the rest of their heads, when those models were first revealed. And yet to many, that is the 'iconic' orc look these days. Warcraft Orcs have hair, which some also had issues with to begin with. Hell, even orcs having green skin is completely wrong if you go by Tolkien's descriptions. So it's really all down to whether you choose to allow these to be their own thing, or restrict yourself to an archetype developed by other companies to sell their own versions.

The main prerequisites for an Orc, so far as I can tell, are that they should be big, brutish, relatively primitive humanoids. These fit the bill, horns or no, IMO.

I like the modern RPG looking Orcs. Wouldn't make an army of them but a box for random enemies, sure.

As for the horns, it's clearly a design choice from Fireforge. Good news for those who don't like them, they'll be in plastic / resin, so it shouldn't be difficult to cut them off if you really aren't fond of them. They aren't that big either.

The thing is, since Fireforge is making this product line for a game they sell, they made a universe too. So making orcs different from another fantasy universe makes sense here. Sure, they may not be to everyone's tastes, but you can't blame a designer to have a very specific idea on how should their orcs look in their world.

Maybe... they have been silent since that orc announcement. I expected some WIP renders for the orcs, like they did for the dwarves... but nothing has been mentioned since. And even the link above on Facebook was basically just the link. No verbiage as to what or when...?

Orcs aren't indeed into this Kickstarter, they announced it on their Facebook page (the good link is inside the quote as well) :

We had delays, but the project is ready to be launched. It will be only for dwarf models (sorry orc players but we still have to work on orc models, they are not ready). Join our kickstarter (we will launch it during next week) to help us in releasing a wonderful range of hard plastic dwarves!
This is your chance to be part of this project and of course your chance to get access to our discounts program!

Sad, but well if they're not ready, they're not ready. Better to be clear and honest before the campaign is starting.

I want units of 20, for the dwarves...

I am not sure how the command sprue interacts... The sets were said to be 12 dwarves to a box for infantry. There are 6 legs on the infantry sprues... so it looks like 3 sprues to a box. 2 infantry sprue and 1 command sprue per box.

Which means 16 legs and 15 torsos per box... thanks to the accessory sprues, the extra torso needed is not an issue. So, basically 1 box = 16 dwarves if that is the actual case.

So... 10 boxes makes 160 dwarves.
That means i could have 8 units of 20...
So 5 boxes of warriors, 5 boxes of Hammerers. 5 boxes of Muskets will make 3 units of musketeers... and i would have the command sprues as bonus figures from them.
and 4 boxes of cavalry, is 4 units of 6 rams...

so... 19 boxes... will yield
60 muskets
160 infantry
24 cavalry
and plenty of left overs for command squad or artillery conversions.

Way too much math for me. It is strange that there are 4 legs and 3 torsos on the command sprue though .

Maybe its just two sprues of the troops per box with the command sprue being separate, otherwise that's going to be a lot of extra flags and stuff left over. I'll have to really sit down and do some planning tonight.

Agreed. With the Northman, i had a similar dilemma. I wanted units of 30... it was a bit easier as all the weapon options for the infantry were in the one box, and the command did not come with extra legs... so 5 boxes of northmen made 60 infantry or 2 units of 30... So 10 boxes made the 4 units of 30 i wanted. Which ended up as:
* 1 unit of 30 spear and shield
* 1 unit of 30 2-handed spear
* 1 unit of 30 sword and shield
* 1 unit of 30 converted halberd
120 total infantry...

I dont know if i really need 160 dwarf infantry though... I also have to work out the weapon option numbers, as in my 2-handed hammers group, I want them all to have 2-handed hammers, no axes... and the 1 handed weapons on the hammerers are all different... :( I am even debating making an all female foot unit of pistoliers...

The accessory sprues are really interesting, especially since some kits come with more legs than torsos.

Does one of the female dwarf torsos have an optional boob-window/gorget combo? I’m not sure what’s going on with that, but if so that’s one way to have all the bases covered (or not).

19 boxes means 19 command sprues…

The cavalry sets will come with a command sprue too… so a box of cavalry can make 6 mounted troops and 3 infantry… with an extra set of legs.

If I did get 19 boxes…just the command sprues would yield 57 torsos and 76 legs.
15 boxes of infantry means 180 infantry…so that’s 256 legs 237 torsos… so I would need 19 more torsos to make 256 complete dwarves..

Does look like it. That's a really clever piece of design.

Ill be grabbing 5 boxes of Aquebusiers. Ive been wracking my brain for months trying to figure out how I could turn my 60 Northmen longbow-men into hand gunners. I bought some arms from Anvil-Industries and asked some friends to 3D print some rifles but none of them came through.

Now ill just build them as longbow-men and use these as hand gunners. Yay.

The Northmen in my opinion are the best heroic scale fantasy human infantry on the market. No crazy mono-pose "multi-part" infantry that is GW's M.O at this point. You get what you want for line infantry, similarly posed, not overly dynamic, a true multi-part kit to give just enough subtle variation between each model to keep a block of infantry interesting, but all preforming the same relative task. Plus a choice of spears or swords, and command sprues a-plenty.

Yea but only 12 models a box......

That said, fireforge just posted some potentially inflammatory stuff on thier Facebook page.

I collect:

Grand alliance death (whole alliance)

Stormcast eternals

Slaves to Darkness - currently Nurgle but may expand to undivided.
