Finished my Waaagh! Banner. If you want to see the process pics, and the finished pics of the Nob carrying it, check out the update to my P&M blog. I figure this fits the theme because it prevents other squads from fleeing and can be used as a melee weapon in a pinch. Final pics:

As always, some great entries this month. Well done all who have finished already, and good luck to those trying to squeak in under the deadline!

I had a couple of spaces in my entry, so worked up a couple of additional gribbly bits for Stargrave. Also the previous finished pics were a bit rubbish, so retook them too

So combined set of proof and finished pics below.

Hi guys! I managed to get something painted for the challenge this month.

I painted a couple of the creepy-crawley monsters from the board game Mice and Mystics. I painted them using a grisaille method, which you can see part of in the proof pic on the spider.

I'd never heard of the girsaille method, but now I want to give it a go. I'll have to find something to try it on...

Now showing The Fellowship of the Ring, along with some Dreadball Captains!

Painting total as of 4/13/2024: 31 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain

Painting total for 2023: 79 plus 28 Battlemechs and a Dragon-Balrog

I feel like the voting thread for this month will need a trigger warning; so many creepy crawlies!

I didn't quite finish in time unfortunately, but I'll post my submission later today - Belladamma Volga herself. Even her name inspires fear in the citizens of Ulfenkarn...

EDIT: And here she is:

I struggled a bit with her base - I was trying to get a marble effect, but it was my first time doing it and (foolishly) I had already glued her on before painting. I think it's OK nonetheless.

I'm enjoying the monochrome-plus-red-accents theme, it's an interesting challenge to get different textures and feels without using colours.

Just sneaking in before the close. I'd intended to do a blue fade effect on the quills, but ran out of time.

Finally got around to doing the league table update

Sorry they are not as regular as they should be, hobby time is taking a back seat at the moment with too many other things going on.

Yeah, it's a very cool, fun method. I recommend watching the video by Marco Frisoni on it. It's the best way I've found to use Contrast paints, certainly. I find it very quick and easy to do, and I can draw on skills from when I used to draw and ink my own comic books when I was a kid. I do have a couple of other examples I've painted using this method from Mice and Mystics. I might post them up when I get a chance.

You have to exaggerate the highlights and shadows and not worry about smooth blends at all. It's fun to introduce a bit of stippling and even cross-hatching. Also, bear in mind that every colour you use will become desaturated as it is "shaded" by being painted over black and grey. You do get quite a natural-looking shade on things, but you don't get that mini-painting thing where you can highlight or shade by adding other colours to boost the contrast. The orange highlights on the red parts of the centipede were painted on after. If you're looking to give it a go, I think it works better on more detailed models. I can't see it working great on Space Marines unless you're planning to do a pretty weathered look and covering the armour in scratches. I don't know though, you might very well be able to make it work. Try it!

Thanks for the lead on the Frisoni video-- I don't have a lot of time to sift through a lot of YouTube content, so I appreciate being pointed in the right direction.

Based on your description, it sounds like I'll have to unlearn some of my go-to painting techniques. This will be a fun experiment.
