Cool batrep! You should've got some extra points for painted minis
I totally agree that that IG commander model is one of the best in the range. One of the first models I ever got and his whole squad was just fantastic. Oh the days of pewter!

Yes I will instate this. MIGHT even get him to pick up a brush, most of his models are 2nd Ed era and still unpainted (or just done to poor standard).

I like those IG a lot too, such a history to them. He's undercoated now ready to go. I might get a bit done tomorrow so will hopefully get in an update then too.

Great blog BTW. Nice to see more Ultramarine master race out there.

Here's another shot of the completed Captain, slightly pointless as it's just black but paint will come soon!

Here is a bunch of progress on the Termies too..

Early base coats..

Ink washes..

Tidy ups after inking and first stages of highlighting, the metallics have been done here. Fiddly business of the white areas progressing.

First pass at the white on top of the gray I'd used as a base tone, obviously annoyingly fiddly to get a smooth finish and not go over all the gray (to act as shading) and the black lines delineating the various components of the helmet.

Near final stages now..further white layer has been applied and the eyes 'gem'd'.

As these are the Black Reach models they have the little tilting plates on their armour. I wanted them to be a bit more individualized like my Sternguard are..

From some time ago now..still love these dudes..

So I gave them all personal heraldry. This guy is close to finished now..final blue highlight applied.

This guy has had the cross turned into a single stripe, looked too 'Death Company-ish'.

Classic Laurel wreath and also..

ULTRA FIST.

So these dudes have been ticking along in the background for a while. I just finished them and will do some glamour shots soon. I'm starting the last two guys to finish the squad off. Then I will probably do the IG Captain and then maybe start a Lieutenant.....

Hope you like.

I love it when you 'go the extra mile' on your own minis. I think it has a disproportionate effect on your fondness of them, the few guardsmen that ive personalised slightly are by far the most valuable in my eyes.

However this does lead to you not wanting them to die in games which has lost me the game bc i didnt want private bloggs to get shot up, as he had some greenstuff goggles on lol.

Nice. I still think those Black Reach terminators stand up today.
I always liked the look of the tilting plates and you've made the correct decision getting rid of the red X on the one. It did look too Death Co. and like some kind of weird DW hybrid.

Surprised that you picked out the detail on the upper legs in gold! Seems a bit blinging for you.
Maybe you're ready for the command tanks soon.

Yes for basic Termies they've come up alright. I've done what I can to increase the variation between them but there is only so much with 2 body types in a 5 man squad (I siphoned off the Sarge to be the basis of a Termie Captain to come).

I've been staring at pics of Rowboat Girlyman too long. I painted those strut bits in gold as a throwback to the old Rogue Trader Era stuff, the early pics always had them picked out in gold, the only pic I could find was this one..

Obviously it's an aspirational image and we shouldn't measure ourselves against it. It also helps them look more baroque and fancy. The Sternguard out bling these guys a lot and the other 1st Co badarses need some shiny too. I don't like the blue and white Termies of the GW standard scheme too dull.

Here, as threatened, are the finished pics of the 1st 3 dudes..

Pew Pew. Not sure if I should go back and do checks on his knee too, any thoughts?

FW resin honours on his pucher. I do my Cruxs in Silver rather than bone or stone as it limits the palette and is just simpler. Not sure if this wants another highlight maybe..

Also maybe the shells in the mag should be bronze?

Changed heraldry. Instead of Death Co. it looks to me like an 80's cigarette packet..improvement?

Couldn't be arsed to paint anything on his walloper.

Pew Pew Lasers!

I gave his Heraldry a little wash with Devlan..

Aforementioned ULTRA FIST!

That's them all done. On with the next 2!

Hope you like em!

Looking good.

Do you normally paint the shells in mags? I think it helps add some more detail to the guns, but then, I don’t do colored caseings so mine need the extra help.

Checks the the knee would be good, but not required. For things like heraldry, I can be nice to have them echoed in more then one place on the mini.

Highlights look fine.

Looking forward to the rest of the squad. Need to get them to the table punching out some traitors and heretics. Maybe a few xenos for flavor.

I do usually do the brass in brass yes but I noticed the original Termie squad (painted very early in this armies life) didn't so I just kept it consistent but I could redo them.

Yes I like to echo it too, not sure I can be arsed though.

Yep punching some dudes in the face will be great. Termies are very variable in the fight phase as hitting on 4+s can be a real dick sometimes. I'm going to do a Termie Captain so I have the option of dropping him in to buff their shooting and punching accordingly.

Hiya!

So these guys are coming on but their has been some side projects creeping on as well..

This dude has had the first basecoats applied (in the drying times of the above). I'm undecided what colour to do the braid? Thinking either white or yellow, like Yarrick's seen here:

Any thoughts? I suppose red might be a thing but may prove too garish..

Started planning a Lieutenant too. I will give him a power wep and a master crafted bolter. The Helmet and sword are from a donation by Alex from the BaC set and the torso is from the Ultra upgrade sprue. I think I will chop off the leather skirt thing, not a big fan of those. I would leave the belty bit as an attachment point for a scabbard and/or a holster..

Thinking about making his bolter look more MC ish I had a rummage through my bits (oh er readers). These were some contenders..

Pew

Pew Pew

I'm thinking of this one. I've moved the mag down from it's far forward original postion. Looks like a relic and it is, OG RTB01 OMFG.

Let me have any suggestions which I can ignore unless that was what I was going to do anyway.

MLCS has posted a little Bat Rep of a 1k game we had, head over there and watch me get pwned (spoilers). It did do a lot to neuter my recent SM enthusiasm, 13pts a dude is just terrible considering their hitting power and the lessened protection on power armour. There is FAQ coming out apparently but I've only heard of IG nerfs in that (Yay, they fixed Conscripts being the same cost as Regulars by increasing the cost of regulars!). The 2k list I was working towards just seems terrible now. I then wrote a 2k IG list which is probably 4x as powerful. I think SM may be getting shelved. Which is sad as I was enjoying painting them and being enthused but they seem to becoming a painting project.

Guard are in a very good spot right now, while marines are mid-field at best, Reading the report, it looked like the dice were not being kind to you, which never helps. I’d not give up quite yet. While librarians are cool and have some nice tricks, I’ve found 8th really rewards aura buffs. Try putting a captain a/o an LT. on the table and see what happens. Or the Big G-man.

T/au are going to be getting a new codex shortly, so their commander might get nerfed.

Keep the faith, Courage and Honour!

1k lists are always bad with SM but if I didn't take the Libby the inevitable Stealth Cheese squad would have never died. I did roll very badly too. I do like Capt-LT double bubble but the problem is that a basic marine isn't worth 13pts and the good vehicles all have too few wounds. A Devilfish has more HP than a Predator? I see a lot of SM players gravitating towards Scouts and Termies more as basic dudes just don't work. I will never run Rowboat as a principal.

I can’t speak to T*au, as I’ve not played against them in 8th. But try getting your stormraven on the table. They are mean. Plasma spam seems to be a popular option listening to the chatter. But if you want to be more competitive, you probably want to listen to people other then myself.

I’ve always tried to ignore the “other armies do it better” train of thought. I play marines because I like them. If I just wanted to win games, I’d just start an Eldar army and spam the broken crap. Wait, I already have an Eldar army? Well, I should probably get their broken units.

Ultras might not be top table right now, but should be fine for casual games at the local level. Unless you are playing someone who is significantly more competitive then you are. But 40k has always been a game where you needed to be on the same page as your opponent for the level of game you are playing,

I must say that the last bolter looks the best.

As ever, I love the heraldry scattered about as it makes everything look much more personalised (which I think matches the fluff) and makes the army a group of individuals rather than batch painted goons.

Thanks for sharing

I've no problem with them being not top tier but this feels worse than that. I've used a 'Raven and a 'Raider and both died in one firing phase :( I naturally gravitated to less centralized stuff like Laserbacks which end up at about 120 points. A Russ with BC and HB is 152. Which would you prefer? I completely agree about playing with people who are playing the same game as you and my little circle of players do tend to have a certain 'code of conduct', you don't run 3 Riptides (perhaps not these days mind) and I'll leave the Shadowsword in it's box but I still find SM unfun vs T'pau especially. It feels roughly similar vs BA but I've only played one game so far vs the new book. I don't need it to be broken just not pathetic.

Mini supply drop happened, I decided I wanted a few more CCW Scouts and won this auction on eBay..

There were 4 dudes, I think I will swap the bolter for a shotgun and give the others knives that aren't bigger than a planet (might keep the chainsword). I was going to replace the HB but maybe it's a keeper. I will need a set of legs at least to build a sarge. I was looking at the cool shotgun holding arm off the Scout biker set and would like that but haven't found it in stock yet. Liked the idea of a shotgun-power axe sarge.

The lot had this guy thrown in. I think he's from the old metal SM command squad box. I was planning to just list him on eBay but I'm toying with the idea of just using him as my other Lieutenant, I was planning to do a jump one but this guy is quite cute.

The last two termies are getting there.

I've done the tilting plate on the Cyclone dude but am unsure of what to do on the sarge, it's at a bit of an angle so will be a bit obscured. Any suggestions gratefully received!

Basing started, so close to finishing these guys now.

That's it for now.

Word.

Finally finished the Termies. Feels good, had them since Black Reach was released. I'll do the glamour shots soon but for now I've a few quick snaps of the next project.

This is my converted Termie captain. I've used the sarge from the Termie squad in the BR set (I added the free Termie from the cover of WD back then to bump the squad back up to 5) and combined him with the torso from the power armour captain. It bothered me that a sarge had an iron halo too.

I shaved down his push in torso and it fits quite easily to the termie body (though I did have to add the little arch above his head). I've already nicked his bolter to be my Cassius' MC bolter..remember this guy?

Waste not want not. Finished him in 2014 apparently.

I decided that whilst SB are great I'd like to up gun him. I got the combi plas from the old commander kit (as is his big shoulder pad on his left arm) as it's one of the few ways to DS a special weapon for Codex Marines.

Pew pew. He had a claw originally but I've replaced that with a fist just so I can equip him with a Wrist Mounted Grenade Launcher. I love those old RT throwback weapons but I will have to GS it entire.

Hope you like, finished Termie squad pics soon.

Nice work on the TDA captain. C-plas is probably a good call; Plenty of other ways to get bolter fire into a list.

For the GL, do you have any bits from the plastic 30k terminator sets? I used one of those to make AGLs for my intercessors. Another thing that was suggested for that was to cut the fins off a spare missile.

I haven't got any of those 30k bits no, I was planning to copy the OG RT TDA Captain's, I've one lying around to work from. Yes I think there's enough SB already in the Termie contingent, as good as they are and all. A Plas can threaten other targets and I can overcharge and use his inbuilt re-roll to hopefully not die.

I did get those shots of the completed squad:

'Terminators Ready!'

'Deep Striking!'

Sarge. Went with simple 'U' and 'Purge' on his tilting plate.

Slightly out of focus here but you can see his little 'U' pendant hanging from his SB handle.

Realised I didn't texture the other side of the chain but it was too late by this point.

Cyclone conversion. I halved the size as it looked huge to me back then, I'm used to it now and this one looks a bit small. GS eye thing.

I used a trimmed scope to be a little laser pointer for his launcher. The vets amongst you may remember the old targeter they used to have in lieu of a PF. The leg had it's detailing changed to be a U and Sword. All the 3 guys who have this body all have converted leg symbols to help differentiate them.

Added a few kill markings to his launcher and a slogan to his fist. 'Never Forget' is a reference to the loss of most of the 1st Co. at the Battle of Macragge.

That's them finally. Hope you like.

Started doing some of the GS work on the TDA Captain and a bit on the IG Captain too, look forward to them next.

Hello.

Sorry for log absence, school holidays and hard times have pushed all this crap by the wayside. Recovering now and have been enjoying getting a bit done..

There are several projects on the go right now, here is some Marine stuff.

Here's my Termie Captain conversion..

I've been smoothing over the joins between the plug in torso and body..extending the cloth strips and creating a bottom margin to the torso..

I've extended the cloth on this side too..

Here's my OG RT Captain complete with obligatory back banner....classic old model that this new version will take cues from..

Wrist mounted grenade launcher...awesome.

So we are obviously making one of these...here is the basic box with a hole for the shooty bits to come out of..

Added the covering bit here..

Back unit and some detailing (skullz) added..whole thing is slightly too far back but I'm not prying it off now.

There's still a bit to do on this but it's nearly there. I may add a few more bits but he's nearing undercoat o' clock..

In other news, work has started on a pair of LTs and the IG Captain is also nearly done more on them soon.

Please feel free to comment and chime in with suggestions etc it all helps to keep me inspired (especially as the new Battletech PC game comes out later today, whoops).

Thanks...

Yes. Short answer, first pic of it shows it squeaks by. I will try to leave the electronic crack alone and still maintain my plastic crack habit.

Thanks for all the replies, here's something else that's been dragging on too long..

Last time we saw the IG Captain he was looking like this:

A bit too avant-garde for most tastes so I decided to add colours..

And more

Nearly

Almost and...

Finished! Pleased with him for a relatively quick paint job. I think the braid looks fine and not too overwhelming for the model. I considered yellow but think it would be too much..

Pew pew. As I tend to use Valhallan chapter tactics I get the magic bolt pistol which makes him act as a pre nerf Commissar. Who have been recently unerfed in a new direction, wow. LEAVE IG ALONE GW *sobs*. Actually I'm surprised IG weren't nerfed in the last FAQ.

Arm bars denote Captain rank, just like the Sarges get already on the sprue.

Now my original Captain has someone to hang out with, someone who gets him and understands how hard it is to meet people when your an out of production early 80s lead figurine. There's something about the new guy that reminds me of Colonel Gaddafi, maybe it's the big cap and braid?

Too soon?

They went on a date to hang out with the Facebook Servitor. "Servitor!, Update my status to 'Enchanted'".

Hope you all like. This is my last IG model painted again, that's 5265pts according to BattleScribe. Would still like to add a Techpriest however.....

Moar SM stuff SOON TM.

Love the new take on the old guy. Makes me want to strip down my old RT guard and paint them up to a modern standard. I should have enough to do the 2xHQ, 3xTroops needed for the crap ton of CPs and plentiful bubblewrap. And put the old boys at work doing something other then collecting dust. Might just be the nostalgia talking, but the Necromundian 8th has far more going for them then any modern regiment.

I forgot you made that objective. Loads of fun there!

Thanks dude. Yes lots of inspirations for this force came from armies of that era, the Necromundians being a big part of it. I always planned to do a unit with the tiger stripes some of them had. They (IG) obviously work very well as a support unit for SM, filling a lot of the game utility gaps SM suffer from.

I've decided to do (another captain) with a model I've had for a while:

This guy. He was the limited edition dude from a while back and I like him. I've not seen him around either so he will be at least a bit original. Equipped with a PF too which is good idea now it doesn't trash his 'I' stat. The SB is fine but probably better as a plasma something but I don't want to spam them and a SB is good and cheap too. I may use it as the 'Primarch's Wrath' which is a Relic that's technically a bolter these days but it's RF2 like a SB anyway, so not too hard to imagine.

Silly 'skullbard' comes off too and I will build him like this and just fill in the locator slot. But that does allow me this option:

Blamo. Extra RT goodness. I still don't think I can mount this here, as much as it's fitting.

I think it's just too busy (and the Skullbard is ridiculous) the quest to find it a home continues. So this guys basically done, I did GS an old school captains bars on his shoulder but it was a bit bad so I just scrapped the idea. If it fits it will be easier to paint.

WMGL received the last bits, a cable running from the old chainfist arm has been connected to the launcher, like the original has. I did a bit of trimming to make it look nicer too.

I've been building 2 LT's as well, more on them soon.

I now realise I've set myself up to paint 4 SM HQs in a row, we'll see how that goes.

PS Battletech is really good.
