The company that makes these is based in China, a country that is known for IP piracy. They'll be around for awhile.

Some pretty crude stuff compared to the modern LEGO sets you see advertised in weekly department store fliers, but really cool compared to the stuff from the 80's and really early 90's that I used to play with

Well beef- here's the thing. GW doesn't have a choice. If they don't protect their IP then it's not legally protected for them. Either you protect your IP and the courts back you up or you don't and they don't either.
