It isn't cruel, my Father left my mother when I was around one. September babies are conceived around New Year's.

The mat is not Vinyl, alas. It has always been a very thick poster paper. But I've always wanted one, mostly for Nostalgia.

--B.

To confirm, the Roads are 4" wide (without sidewalks) and the 'blocks' are 12" wide...but as you can see quite irregular.

Also, to reply to an earlier Q by Skalk: The Width of a Skyshield Landing Pad is 12". It is an imperfect Octagon. The long sides are 6", the short sides are 4". With the 'shields' in the lowered position, the width is 16". The height is 3.5", 5.5" with the shield sides up. Each stanchion has a built-in ladder, which lines up with an opening through the landing pad. The pad (assembled from 4 identical pieces) has the same 'detailing' top and bottom, which I find morally repugnant and very lazy.

I have an idea for modular city streets, although I figured 3" wide roads....

I think if youre gonna make roads they need to be at least land raider width.

I found 6" a good width for gaming, when ive done roads in the past, works great if you paint it up as a double road (ie with markings down the middle)

I half agree lols... I think roads should be mixed sizes, because some like in the uk are smaller than main roads. If your going to do it, "A" roads should be 6" wide, with "B" roads roughly 4" wide. But also remember, roads in 40k are meant for Civies, not Military vehicles, so the logic of making roads to fit Military vehicles is one thats lost on me lols.

Yeah but people do need to play on them

Making roads for a game table, that penalise players for having too big tanks is a bit harsh

lols not really... no club or players I know use roads anyways so it makes very little difference. its like no one I know uses water features so no chimera's get to use their amphibious rule

The entire Interstate Highway system in the US was designed specifically for Military transport of Missiles from coast to coast. The Autobahn was designed for Military Traffic, and all Roman roads were designed for Military Traffic first and foremost, which also allowed Rome to be sacked from attackers using those same roads. WTF good is an infrastructure system for commercial traffic if it can't be secured and defended by Military units?

Tis a question of choice Dave, within game terms, a lot of players I know just don't use roads. but if your going to build them, go with whatever logic feels right

The context of the conversation is in regards to Brian's cityfight mat, which then led to a discussion of road measurements in such a dense urban environment. A cityfight or CoD game requires the use of roads because there is nowhere else on the board to move models because of the dense urban terrain.
1. you are taking it out of context, making it about "choice" or your personal experiences. which is like me saying "no one I know owns an orange car, so therefore orange cars don't exist"

Frankly speaking, when I build a terrain table, I build it with specific features in mind. I am also HEAVILY biased by the tables I used to play on at the LA Battle bunker. Here, let me scrounge up a picture or two...

Sherman, set the WAYBAC machine to 2004...

Take a good hard look. The trees are glued down, which is the only thing I find truly annoying about this table. Aside from that? Roads. Bridges. Water. An entire 5" wide right-flank that is hills, with a notch cut into it for the road. One side has a tower, the other does NOT. Wide open center! You can say "This is a 6th edition Fantasy Table", and you'd be right. But it also made for an EPIC game of 40K.

This is why I don't want to play in tournaments, anymore. You would never see this board at a tournament. Ever. But it has so much PANACHE'. There's an entire story, built right into this table!

"The main road forked at Jansen's Tower, the last, most northern outpost of the City-State. The river marked the borderlands, two ancient bridges crossed it, never meant for more than light civilian vehicles. One branch of the road followed the edge of the hills, into the river valley. The other headed due north, through the "Jagged Notch". Here is where two forces met, each seeking the same goal..."

Yeah.

My tables have water. Roads. Hazards. LOS-blocking terrain. One side may be entirely unsuitable for your army to start in. This is war, not chess.

--Brian

PS: I think the loss of the "Strategy Rating" for armies (to determine board edge selection and who goes first) was a tremendous mistake. But, this is what House Rules are for!

PPS: I miss my Tzeentch all-foot-slogging army.

i am fully with yopu brian on plaing on such a table... that looks very good... one could dream up some cool stories on such a landscape... for me the game is a side effect to RPG... just a strategic RPG really...so a table should be able to provide such dreams...

I agree... a great table makes for a great game (usually)... and a more interesting one all the time.
