Resourceful work with the multimelta conversion! Packaging plastic has many uses indeed.

3D-modelling is really fun! Been doing some practicing over the last spring.
I was supposed to print some of the models I've done with my friend's printer, but once again it seems to be out of commission

Also good luck with all the renovation, it's hard work. But worth it in the end.

The blood angels are looking great, I love seeing classic models done justice. And welcome to the 3d printer club! Though I admit my FDM printer has been idle for a while, I've still got the temptation to go resin...

I bought both an MSLA and FDM printer while still in Afghanistan early this year and have no regrets. For running shoulder pads you may have more luck with a resin printer but for 4 pound you could probably get a .2mm nozzle and slow down your speeds for good results.

Looking forward to more!

Cheers AustonT, there really is only one colour for Blood Angels. Sadly my Blood Red dried out so my latest lot are the modern GW equivalent. I suspect you may be right on the pads needing to be resin, I’ve been busy with Router templates the past few hobby sessions, but I have some promising pad designs. I think I can improve the quality of output with some tinkering, I need to figure out a step by step calibration as there’s just too many variables even with the simple slicer it came with.

The multi melta was fun, he watches over my desk while I work, I should try to get around to painting him at some point. Sadly I’ve not got the time to learn much complicated modelling, but I’ve done what most people seem to do and built a large catalogue of stuff to print. Once I’m done with extension related diy I might find time to tune the settings and get printing a few things
Bellerophon wrote:The blood angels are looking great, I love seeing classic models done justice. And welcome to the 3d printer club! Though I admit my FDM printer has been idle for a while, I've still got the temptation to go resin...

Cheer Bellerophon, I think you’ll have painted your warlord quicker than I’ve painted these guys! Resin is tempting, but the price is a bit steep and I don’t like the idea of the chemicals.

So I’m still here but there’s not been much time for hobby lately. I’ve done some printing of things mainly diy related, but have done some shoulder pads and Medic bits for the Void Panthers. Not sure how the latter will turn out, but I’m hopeful on the former. I have two variants of pads that look decent, I just need to figure out decent settings and ways to improve surface finish. Once I’ve primed them I’ll share pics as they’re a bit hard to photograph in bare PLA.

Tonight though I picked up the painting sticks for the first time in forever. Only a short session but I got the edge highlights done on the red of the Blood Angels. Somehow they look better in the photos than RL, so that’s nice.

This was also the first time trying out a new brush. After my last session I decided to treat myself and bought a few Green Stuff World Kolinsky brushes. I was reasonably impressed with this one, though it might take a while to get used to the long bristles. I just need to keep taking good care of it now!

Hopefully I’ll get some more progress soon

Thanks youwashock, it’s good to be back painting, though I suspect it’ll continue being sporadic.

So not good news to share tonight. I was finally done printing my router templates for the door project and my printer packed in! I was part way through tuning it to start proper hobby printing when it came up with a heating error. Taking the extruder apart I noticed a connector was green and brown with a bulge in the side. I’m hoping it’s just the connector and it hasn’t tried the board or the heating element. I’ve ordered a soldering it and a few similar connectors in the hope of repairing it. And here was me buying a cheap printer that was supposedly simple! Oh well, I hope I can remember how to solder after what must be the best part of 20years!

To replace your blood red you could do Vallejos “Bloody Red” but I find it’s shade is a little off. I’ve found Mecha Color Red 69008 to be a very good match when dried. If you’re interested I’ve probably got 15 reds I’ve bought looking for the right match. You may find one more to your liking than the Mecha color. I’ve also done a test with unaltered Liquitex ink and feel like I’m real close at what I think will be 1/10th the cost of miniature paints for airbrush basing and vehicles

What printer and filament are you working with. 185 DOES look good but a lot of those temps are REALLY stringing. How long has that filiment been open and is it in a dryer box?

Cheers for the colour tips AustonT, I’ll look out for them next I go paint shopping. I’m liking them in Evil Sunz Scarlet for now, so I’ll see how it goes.
The filament is about a week old, it lives in a compartment in the printer so shouldn’t be ageing too badly.”, stringing and oozing is the next problem I intend to hone!

So good news all round, in Printer land it’s back working, and in mini guy land I managed some painting, lastly the skirting boards are all painted! My back is most happy for the latter of those 3!

The printer wasn’t too bad to fix. I ordered a soldering iron to allow me to replace the connector that had blown in the pics from my last post. I don’t think it was a perfect solder joint but it seems serviceable and the extruded now heats up nicely. I’m midway through fiddling with the retraction settings, but I’m off to bed shortly so won’t be able to finish it completely.

The blood angels took some steps towards completion after I fixed the printer. Nothing major as it was already late when I started so all I got done was the Black. Tidy up the areas with Game Color Black, then edge highlighting with Eshin Grey then Dawnstone. All was done with my new GSW Kolinsky Brushes, and I have to say “I’m loving them.” So much more control and better flow off them, well worth the minor expense!

Let me know what your think, and thanks for looking!

Thanks Yorkright, I can recommend the GSW range, their triangular handles seem to be moving me up the brush and helping with control somehow too. Take the plunge!
youwashock wrote:Ready to face down Ghazghkull in a 2nd edition battle report, they are!

Yep, I need to get some polystyrene hills and balls with spikes for them to fight over

So the printer has done a few bits for minis now. I was missing a Narthecium so have printed one and a few shoulder pads using my honed in settings. The Quality isn’t too bad, despite having visible lines I’ve managed to smooth most of the and have a plan to deal with the rest using polyurethane varnish. If I ever get round to priming anything I’ll take some picks. I’m currently having levelling issues which took up a good bit of my hobby time tonight. Still not back to where it needs to be but I’m close now.

I slapped some more paint on the Blood Angela once I’d gotten tired of chasing levels. The iron bits got touched up with Leadbelcher and highlighted with Stormhost Silver and the Golds got touched up with Retributor Armour and Liberator. Sadly I succumbed to the hayfever eyes and called it a night.

I’m happy how they’re coming out, I think they already look better than the previous lot. I need to get on with their bases as there’s not much else to do on them now. It’s mainly just the gems and lenses which will be green to match the rest of the squad.
Thanks for looking !

Thanks Viterbi, I’m hoping to start cranking stuff out soon, the problem is there’s too much choice!

It’s been a pretty busy few weeks but I finally managed to get a decent amount of painting in tonight. I was on a it of a roll so I just continued with the 4 Blood Angels until they were done. In fairness there wasn’t much left, mostly transfers, details and basing. As my basing material had run out I mixed up some more using a turquoise emulsion sampler I bought a while back. It doesn’t match hawk turquoise that well, but it seems to work after an Agrax wash and the hawk dry brush. It seems I had t mixed the sand in too we’ll as the first base in particular ended up with too much paint and a bit smooth as a result. Good enough for government work though! The most time was spent on the green bits like gems and lenses. They came out ok I think, not my best but decent. I also spent a bit of time tarting up the banners, I still love the company banner 20+ years on! They both got a shade around the edges of the colour blocks and a highlight on the black. I’ll get some better photos when i get the chance, but here they are finally!

After I finished I realised that I’d put too much black in my palette it remembered that I had t painted the rims on the last bunch of Orks I did, so here they are too;

It feels good to get those projects off the desk at long last. Next up will be washing my Elves, then my daughter has requested that I do the Land Speeder, so that’ll be another long project no doubt! Thanks for sticking with it on the long journey!

Yorkright wrote: Wonderful work you’ve done on those blood angels, Dante would be proud.

Cheers Yorkright, I was just thinking earlier what characters I’m missing, Dante might be a good one to add at some point?

So Mrs gobert didn’t want to watch the F1 with a hangover tonight, so I banished myself to the loft to watch it and got a bit of painting done too. First up was my usual inter-project project of the bulk of my remaining High Elves. Nothing special, just cranking out lots of them, tonight was a blue wash over the silver;

I also lined the profiles on their helmets and the Spearmens belts. I think they’re starting to look more Elven now, even amongst my pile of primed minis.

As I mentioned in a earlier post my daughter has chosen the next project; a Void Panthers Land Speeder. I’m quite looking forward to this one as it’s mini I’ve wanted since the lead version came out back in the day. It’ll be black like all of my other Void Panther vehicles, but I wanted to paint the marines and cockpit lighter, so this will be a 2 stage project. I made a decent start with the cockpit and marines, getting a grey on the cockpit and Zandri dust on their seats. I wanted an off purple for the cockpit, so gave it a druchi violet wash, kinda like the pale blue that Russian planes have, but in purple. The final bit to do was to paint the marines in Retributor Armour;

Sometimes it’s good having a blog, I nearly painted the seats Snakebite Leather, but found the bikers WIP post which told me Zandri! I’m quite liking the purple, gives the effect I wanted, but keeps things on brand so to speak. Just painting the 2 marines and one cockpit should mean decent progress (for me), though next weekend will be a right off as my folks are visiting and 2 weeks later I’m off to watch the F1 in person with 140,000 other people! Can’t wait!

Congrats on finishing of the BAs, gobert. They look great. And good to see the old orks again too! Nice basing work on them too. Reminds me of my old school oval that was 50% rock-hard dirt and 50% ropeburn-inducing buffalo grass.

Speeder is off to a great start! Glad the purple turned out the way you wanted. Really interesting base detail too - are they push moulds?

Huge batch of Elves will look unreal when they are all done. Smart work bundling out the work in small bits.

Exciting things ahead. How nice is it to go outside and see and do things with people - what a weird few years it's been!

Cheer tzurk, I too love seeing the Orks all massed up together! I’ve been hatching a couple of plans too for further expansion of them, but that might be a way off yet. That said I just bought some water effect resin to upgrade their muddy puddles! Their field will be too wet for rope burns! the Speeder base is a Sector Imperialis base from GW. There’s a notch underneath that’s pretty much the perfect size to drill a hole for a flying stand. Looks better than the normal clear base too imho.

Yeah! Tell me about it! Their tunics have a lot of white to paint too :(

DIY and family visits have removed most of my hobby time this past couple of weeks, so there’s no update on the Speeder . I’ve not bee completely idle though and have managed to build a few little bits while in listening mode of Skype meetings. First up were the Space Marine Heroes Series 2 Terminators, they were fun to build and look like great minis to boot. Next up I decided to crank through the Series 3 Plague Marines, again cool minis, but the Nurglimgs were so cool! I love those little guys and may have to invest in more of Papas minions to keep my fix of nurglings!

They’ll all be joining the ranks for the Void Panthers, pre and post fall, in due course. The first Company and all those dedicated to their fallen Chapter Master will be wearing Black armour like the bikes and myother CSMs from BSF.

Next I dug out the Venerable Dreadnought from my Start Collecting Space Marines box. Another cool kit that was fun to put together. I’m thinking black for him too, but the name plates will be gold, so he’ll still be suitwbly.bling.

I might need to get more Dreads at some point!

Not right now though, as next I made a start on the Command Squad. I need to scrounge a few bits to finish the off … like heads and shoulder pads. Another fun build but much more involved.

And that was where my evening ended having watch Elmglamd make a Final of a minor football tournament since 1966, with Italy the only side who’s to stop footballl coming home!

Thanks for looking!
