So reading over coherency rules on PG 15 today and came to the conclusion that if I want to take casualties off to leave 10" between models during my opponents shooting phase I can, as long as during my next movement phase I move them so that at the end of it they are within 2"

Not that I can really think of how this would be tactically advantageous (although I am sure someone will) but it does seem to be allowed.

Drano doesn't exactly scream "toy" to me.

Absolutely. Shooting casualties can be removed from anywhere in the unit (within range and LOS); coherency has no bearing on this.

Casualties from close combat have to be taken to maintain coherency when possible.

happypants i can think of one time(not at band camp) when i took casualties similar to what you described above later in the same turn that same squad was taking hits from blast templates & ordinance templates(i know thats not the order your suppose to shoot but he forgot & i let him go anyway) since the squad was dispersed they took minimal damage & saved the squad for another turn

I actually use this "tactic" all the time when I play my Orks.

When my Grot units take casualties, I often pull from the interior of the "line" of grots I have stretched across the board in order to maintain the maximum frontage for the rest of that shooting phase (because of the "living shield" rule the grots provide to the Orks behind them).

Then in the next movement phase I obviously have to pull the unit back together in order to maintain coherency.
